Hey, 'member back when the characters in South Park actually looked like they belonged with the original cast of the series? Oh yeah, I remember!
Happy Halloween folks, and I'm proud to say that the winner of this year's Halloween Countdown is none other then reality itself! Why Reality? Because in this day and age there's nothing more terrifying to people than having to face reality! With everyone these days creating little safe, idealistic fantasy worlds for themselves, or even in reverse of people thinking the end of the world is right around the corner it seems that everyone just needs to sit back and take a nice, hard dose of reality. Hell, I'm no different! For years now I've been trying to avoid feelings I've had bottled up; to fight against giving up old interests as I age into a different person. Even my countdowns I've had to accept the reality that I can't keep up with a full month long one anymore; My biggest struggle has been against reality! This picture itself is no exception either! I deliberately made Reality look more akin to something from old school South Park, because I don't personally like the newer look. The art of any other character besides the original cast looks like something out of entirely different show, save for the iconic eyeball shape. It's like say... if the artist for Berserk started drawing One Piece, but we kept acting like it was the same because Eiichiro Oda still drew the characters eyeballs... okay that was an esoteric stretch but what I'm getting at is it doesn't matter. It's just another struggle I have against reality to admit that something I liked when I was younger has changed and I don't like that.
Wow... something that was made totally as a joke is turning out to be way more deep and philosophical then I intended; but it's true and I dare you to prove me wrong. Every last one of us today has to battle with reality on a daily basis; it is the most overwhelming obstacle in our lives and beats us harder then anything else. It makes sense that we would all want to hide from it and try to create an unrealistic world for ourselves, because reality sucks. It's boring and scary... but hey, that's life. They way to being a better person isn't through denying reality and substituting your own, but by accepting it, learning from it and growing as a person...
But at the end of the day this really was just a cheap joke I just happened to find a way to justify it, but hey it worked! All-in-all sometimes fantasy is better then reality, I mean here I am celebrating Halloween for it's modern, innocent incarnation and choosing to ignore the reality of it's dark roots. Hey, whatever helps you sleep well at night, am I right? At the end of the month, I just hope you all have a good Halloween and I hope my countdowns have been something that helps you get in the mood for that. While I'll miss going full out like I have in the past, I'm still going to give my smaller countdowns my all. So here's to another year of frights and to many more... just don't let them get too real~
