Dawn is my favorite out of these four, don't know if White has popped up in the show so I can't make an informed decision since I don't read the manga. Lyra, while cute, always struck me as too spastic/bossy and I think Black Misty/Iris is a condescending bitch

Youtube can probably help you with that, in the beginning she kinda goes on how she admires Ash and thinks he would be a good boyfriend for her/Dawn before settling with her other friend. She's kinda spastic and bossy like a lot of anime girls.
And yeah, Ash's Unova friends are just "American" versions of Brock and Misty minus a few characteristics. White Brock is particularly annoying the way he keeps making food analogies.
