no.11 "A surrogate mother who's not what she seems"
TRICK: The Other Mother/Beldam - Coraline
TREAT: Scary Godmother - Scary Godmother (series)

The thing about trick or treat is setting expectations. Sometimes the trick looks like a treat and sometimes the treat was really a trick all along. 'Life's no fun without a good scare' after all and what better way to get sad scare then by lulling you into a false sense of security? I can't think of a character that defines that better than Coraline's Other Mother, a character I've intended to add for sometime but waited for the opportune moment. Much like how the Other Mother waits for just the right moment to strike, because after all, why would your own-(better)-mother ever hurt you?

Inversely sometimes the trick becomes the treat. Gummy body parts, graveyard dirt cake, fake blood, etc. All elements to give you nothing more then a fun surprise that makes the treat all the more enjoyable, which is mirrored in the garish, seemingly monstrous, Halloween drenched Scary Godmother who admittedly I had reservations about adding initially. See just because something fits doesn't necessarily mean I want to add it. Sure, aesthetically she's the most Halloween thing I can think of but I still have to like or care about the subject matter to include it and quite frankly I find the Scary Godmother movies to be abhorrent...that was until I learned about the Scary Godmother book and comics.

Therein I would learn so much more about Scary Godmother and find not only a much more competently written story but some of the most wonderfully beautiful art I've ever seen. I had been tricked. There was such a sweet candy underneath, I just had to peel back that ugly wrapper to find out and this new knowledge immediately changed my tune. Just as Scary Godmother is a twist on expectations, so too was my opinion changed and now I'm a Scary Godmother fan for life...but the movies are still genuinely bad. I'll stick by that!

I love the two characters you picked, they fit the category so well~

I still remember watching the Scary Godmother movies on CN, I remember liking them but I fear for what I'd think if I saw them now...

They're...not good. They're very clearly done on a dental floss thin budget and are sanitizing Jill Thompson's work to the point of being jangling keys for toddlers. Do yourself a favor and look into the original books and comics. They're genuinely witty and don't talk down to kids while slowly moving away from entirely to just be a more adult-oriented series. If anything the art is amazing and absolutely does not convert into 3d (at least not PS1 graphics CGI)
