It always impresses me how to manage to simulate 3D in your sprites. It takes a very subtle attention to detail to pull that off.
I also love the extreme contrast. I have a habit of limiting the contrast in my own sprites or shading way too dark. Maybe intentionally pushing the style to extremes might be a way to remedy these habits? I usually resort to gradient maps to take more direct control of the results, but I still seem to shy away from shading all the way to white. There are times where it might make sense to go all the way.
