“Come in, arwings!! Fox, where are you?! We need you to protect Corneria!!”
***
It was a message that he must have replayed hundreds of times by now. Not through the arwing’s built-in communication system… but through the young vulpine’s mind itself. The last thing he had heard before all had gone so irreversibly silent. Long had it been since any comprehensible message had been able to get through the comm port, neither to receive nor to send out. Yet, as the horrifying words of the uncharacteristically concerned Cornerian general lingered still in his mind, Fox McCloud, leader of the legendary Star Fox team, tried desperately, one last time, to send out a message…
“G-General Pepper!!” He screamed, gritting his teeth in frustration. “Falco!! Peppy!! Slippy!! Please, come in!! This is Fox!! Do you read me?!”
A low, crackling static was the comm port’s only response…
Full of adrenaline, one might have expected the fox to react with fury, and indeed he had had every intention to. To slam on the dashboard, fire a blast of plasma in annoyance. Something, anything to make him feel better…
But instead, after several seconds of just… letting it all sink in, he just… slumped down. Down in defeat. Anger had withered away, and in its place, fear began to take root. Soon, the elite, young, stoic pilot couldn’t help but give a sad little whimper.
He was truly alone…
A tear rolled down his cheek at the thought. His breathing became heavy and fast, his heart rate amping up to a terribly unhealthy level, as panic began to set in. Panic that only became ever more pronounced, as, with no other options, the terrified, lone vulpine began to once more examine his surroundings, looking desperately for a way out. Any way to orient himself, to get his bearings, to help find his way back to Meteo…
The environment he found himself in, however, was… vexing to say the least…
Where he was in Lylat, he had no idea… and, indeed, the more he looked around, the more it seemed like it was… completely out of this dimension. Space itself seemed to warp, to expand and contract as he flew along. Strange purple, blue and orange planets whizzed by him, one after another. It could have just been because of the panicked state he was in, but Fox could have sworn that they all seemed to have these weird… alien-like faces on them. Lips and noses. Some with eyes closed, some with eyes open. Some with smug smiles, others with… no expression at all…
It was almost as if they were taunting him, he thought. Taunting him for his foolish mistake. Still, he didn’t know exactly what had happened… or if it had happened at all. He didn’t know what had compelled him to blast at that strange, greenish space rock in meteo… nor what had drawn him to the bizarre yet alluring bird-like creature that had emerged from it. Why he had felt the need to fly into the creature… nor what sensation had developed him thereafter as his vision became white and blurry. He swore he’d heard, in between General Pepper’s final crackling message, the concerned voices of his teammates calling out to him. His body had felt light, and for just the briefest of moments, despite everything, he’d felt at peace…
But all of it lasted for just a short while. And as he came to… this… oh… nothing could have prepared him for this. And nor did he wish to deal with it any longer. All he wished for now was to return to Lylat. To see his beloved teammates once again. And above all, to put a stop to Andross’ evil schemes for good. He had to, he thought. It was the only thing that felt right… that made sense…
*Beep!* *Beep!* *Beep!*
Yet, as the emergency light began to flash, bathing the arwing’s cockpit in a most hellish, bloody red, and he noticed the fuel gauge begin to dip dangerously close to empty, Fox’s heart dropped - his tail stiffening and a sorrowful whimper escaping his throat yet again - as he worried that he would never get the chance…
In that moment, pieces of space rock almost began to… move before him, right before his eyes, and moving at just the same speed as his arwing, so as to never leave his gaze. They began to form letters, letters that he dared to read, as, with tears streaming down his cheeks and his eyes wide in horror, he began to call desperately for his friends once again…
GAME OVER
***
Was still in a bit of a StarFox mood, so I figured I’d make one more piece of fanart! This time covering one of my favorite easter eggs in any video game, Out of This Dimension! :3
It’s a secret level one can access in the original StarFox on the snes. It’s super trippy and weird, and I really love how it looks. I believe it’s MEANT to be a silly ending, akin to the UFO endings in Silent Hill, for example. And I can definitely see that… but the level is also neverending, so it implies, at least to me, that Fox’s journey more or less ends there. He never escapes or manages to find his way back to Lylat. Given that, I figured I’d give my artist’s/writer’s interpretation :3
Sheesh, but uh… admittedly it DID come out a little darker than originally intended. Especially after the last image that I drew…^^;
Well, if the idea displeases you, you can always imagine an alternative ending! Perhaps our favorite lupine space pirate managed to locate Fox in this bizarre stretch of space, having inadvertently been teleported there himself after trying to attack Fox in Meteo, and getting wrapped up in the white light. And, perhaps, with their combined strength, they both eventually manage to find a way out. Perhaps this was even one of the reasons they began to develop a thing for each other to begin with~ ;3
Or, perhaps Fox was never actually transported anywhere at all, and this was all just in his imagination. It’s pretty open to interpretation, so who can really say? Next thing he knows, he simply awakens in the Great Fox’s infirmary~
Well, in any case, hope y’all enjoy! :3
