As I've been working on the more technical aspects of building my game lately, I've also been working on some of the cutscenes/higher res pictures for it here and there as well. This is one I thought was particularly cute, so I thought I'd share it :3
It's a photo of the main trio from Solaris: Dusk Forger, Sol Seeker, and Umbra Toole. Taken quite a number of years before the game truly begins. I'm planning for the player to be able to examine it in Sol's house at the start of the game if they so wish...
The story behind it is rather tragic. Once upon a time, they were all really good friends, these three. Best friends, even. Sol, having lost his parents before he even managed to lay eyes on them, depended upon and loved his older brother, Dusk, very much. Dusk, though hesitant at first to accept a fox into the family, grew fond of him over time, and happily assumed the "big brother" personality. And Umbra, of course, found much solace in the two brothers as he sought whenever he could to escape from his crazed and abusive father. It was one fateful day when Dusk and Sol found the young wolf sobbing in the woods alone. Dusk was hesitant, of course, but Sol eventually managed to persuade him to take the wolf under their wing. Though Umbra was not a "brother" in the official sense, he became something akin to a "cousin" to the two. And Sol happily referred to him as such whenever he could.
Over time the three grew very fond of one another. They joked, they laughed, they played games, and through it all their bond only strengthened. To the point that, by the time this photo was taken, Umbra was a much happier and confident wolf... though in truth, neither Sol nor Dusk knew TRULY who the mysterious lupine was. Though Dusk, ever cautious, always had his suspicions...
Nevertheless, there was nothing but joy flowing through those woods the day this photo was taken. Dusk, desiring to follow in his father's footsteps, had just graduated from the police academy, and had officially became a police officer. It was something his "li'l bro" admired very much, and so to commemorate it, Sol had insisted they take a photo together! It took only a little teasing from their "cousin" to persuade the deer. And so there they stood, in the forest where their beautiful friendship had so begun. Happy as could be, laughing and smiling as they so often did...
None of them could have expected that only a few months after the photo was taken, Umbra's darkness would once again consume him, and a terrible altercation between him and Dusk would cause their friendship to fragment irreversibly. Umbra would disappear into the darkness shortly thereafter, and Dusk would forgo his career into the police force for a career more direct and personal to him, as a special agent. And poor Sol? He'd be left in shambles. Saddened and confused as to how this could all happen... but filled with a desire to set things right. From that day forward, he would train, too, to become a police officer. Just as his father and adopted brother before him. Until, at last, many years later, while still training in the academy... an event would occur that would set that would allow for a most bitter reunification. An event that would would begin an adventure equal in both parts thrill and tragedy...
