no.19: Negaduck - Darkwing Duck

And lo, we move past the 20's and onto into the 10's...

I'm going to let you all in on a little secret about myself. I love evil twins. Shocking, I know! (as if the fact that I've included Wario four times now in my countdowns wasn't proof of his enough) Sure, it's an easy archetype to make, simply flip a heroic character on their ear and give 'em a new coat of paint, but I love it. Whether they be legitimate twins, from an alternate universe, an evil clone or just someone who mimics the hero for whatever reason it's a trope that I've fallen in love with and I don't think that would be so were it not for Darkwing Duck.

Long before I knew the garlic munching Mario wannabe, my first real introduction to the evil twin trope was that of Negaduck from Disney's Darkwing Duck. Ironically I've never included him in a Halloween Countdown until now, not even the one I did entirely about evil twins because well...I sort of forgot about him. While Negaduck definitely planted the seed, my real interest in the evil twin trope wouldn't really take off until I was introduced to Wario. By that time, I had less access to watching Darkwing Duck and Wario slowly became a more common character to see in Nintendo games so as these things often go I slowly gravitated towards one and left behind another.

This probably would've remained the case had Disney's empty promise to revive the Darkwing Duck series not sent nostalgic memories flooding back to me, namely how much I liked the character of Negaduck. Realizing that he was, in many ways, the origin of my obsession with the evil twin concept and that Disney wasn't going to do fuck all with him or his series I set about to give him my own proper shout out here...Then I forgot about him again until now! Well, better late then never, am I right?
