"A day without breathing"

Sni-tii's attention was drawn from the TV by a slightly muffled voice coming from her right. "It's been another two hours, please come here for your checkup." Holding back a sigh, she paused her show and slithered over, ready to prove she was still fine. She'd been submerged in that hotel room-like tank for 4 hours, and hadn't once inhaled, nor felt any need to; the fluid around her was taking care of that.

Several days ago, the snake had been invited to help test out a new invention, an odd deep blue fluid that could replenish the oxygen of anyone submerged in it. It had been made clear at that time just how it would go: After getting noseplugs in, she'd hold her breath before diving into the fluid and spending a full 24 hours in it, with checkups every 2 hours to make sure she was fine physically and mentally. It was also mentioned that she was NOT to actually breathe the fluid, as it would just feel like inhaling water. Pretty quickly, Sni-tii signed up for it.

Now, having been in the test for 4 hours, she prepared for her checkup, coiling herself in front of a set of buttons that'd let her communicate without bubbling out her air that wouldn't be refreshed for another 20 hours. The scientist outside looked her over, satisfied that she looked the same as ever.

"Are you still feeling okay, Sni-tii?", he said.

With her tail, Sni-tii pressed one of the buttons to respond. "YES.", a computerized voice spoke for her.

"Still not feeling any need to breathe?"

"NO."

"Good, good. Now, we'll just go through another set of quick tests to make sure your mental faculties are still where they should be. Follow my finger with your eyes, please."

Sni-tii did so.

"What's 27 plus 38?"

"...SIXTY. FIVE."

"How many hours have you been in there?"

"FOUR."

"Lastly, touch both sides of your nose with your tail."

Sni-tii adjusted herself, then tapped both sides of her nose.

"Right, that'll be all for those. Any questions or concerns?"

"WHAT. DO. IF. INHALE."

"Just try your best to cough it out. If you can't, we'll send someone in to help you out. And try not to swallow it either, it won't do anything but waste it."

"ALSO. BORED."

"Yeah, fair. It's harder to find waterproof appliances than you might think. We'll see about getting you some more entertainment."

"THAT. IS. ALL."

"Alright, I'll come by to check in in another 2 hours. Hope you manage to deal with that boredom." The scientist walked off, and Sni-tii uncoiled to go back to watching TV. This was going to be a long 20 hours... But maybe she'd finally get to sleep submerged for once.

And, that's the end of this year's Sinktember! This one was pretty fun, having it feature my characters every time really helped spice it up for me.

Might be a good idea for her to block her mouth with something so she doesn't try to breathe in her sleep...

Thanks! I'm gonna see about doing a different gimmick for next year's Sinktember too.

squirtlerocks07 and I did an RP based on this.

S: one day, A machop had been invited to test out a new invention, they didnt say specifically what it was yet but he couldnt pass up on the opportunity to try something new! So of course he accepted and was waiting in a room to get started, unaware that he is also gonna be testing this with somebody else

L: A blue feral snake soon comes in as well, and begins to coil herself up before she notices the machop. "Oh, did they invite you for the testing too?"

S: the machop notices the snake and nods
"Yep, they did...I wasn't expecting someone else to join in, but hey at least I wont alone in, whatever were testing"

L: "Guess you must not know either... Well, I'm sure we'll find out soon." The snake coils herself to relax while she waits.

After a couple more minutes, a dragonite comes in, wearing a labcoat. "Ah, glad you two could make it! Excited to help us out?"

S: "Of course! Ive always wanted to test out new stuff like this! I'm really looking forward to it! We just dont know what were doing yet"

L: Dragonite: "I'll tell you once we get to where the test will be taking place, I like keeping people in suspense. Just follow me, please."

Snake: "Ha, of course you're not gonna tell us yet... Well, lead the way."

S: "Aw man, well I guess we better follow him then" the machop shrugs and follows the dragonite along with the snake, eager to see what they will be testing

L: Eventually, the group gets to a bigger room with a large glass tank that looks like it's been set up sort of like a hotel room, filled with some kind of deep blue liquid.

The dragonite turns to the two. "Alright, now for the reveal... You'll be helping us test out the liquid in that tank, which is made to give oxygen to whoever's submerged in it!"

Snake: "Oh, that's pretty cool!"

S: "Huh?" the machop looks over at the tank
"Hmm, interesting...so we can breathe freely in this thing? And why's it set up like a hotel room?"

L: Dragonite: "Well, you can't actually breathe it, it'd be like inhaling water if you tried. Just being in it is enough. And the room's set up like that because... Well, there's a reason you were previously asked if you had a COUPLE days free for tests, because we're going to need you to stay there for a full 24 hours."

Snake: "...Oh. That's... Probably going to be fine for me."

S: "WHAT?!?!?!" the machop was clearly shocked by that, backing away from the tank with fear on his face

"Uh uh, nope! There's no way in the universe that I can hold my breath for a full 24 hours, thats impossible!!! I dont want to not breathe for that long! Your crazy!"

L: Dragonite: "We figured at least one of you would be scared... But, you don't need to worry, we've prepared for every possible way this could go wrong, and we've got a decent amount of entertainment in there for you two, like books, TV, and video games."

Snake: "That sounds like it might distract you from being scared... Or maybe not."

S: "No way!! Look I'm sorry but, I'm not comfortable doing that! I can't even hold my breath for 10 minutes for arceus' sake, let alone a full 24 hours! So, no...I don't wanna participate!"
the machop shivers in total fear and shock, unless he gets convinced to do this, hes not budging

L: The dragonite sighs. "If you really want to back out, that's fine... We'd get better results with two people taking part in this, but just one might be fine."

Snake: "Maybe we can find some way to make it fun for you? Like, you'd be able to swim around as much as you want without needing to worry about surfacing!"

S: "Are you kidding me?? Surfacing is the best part after a dive, and not doing that takes the fun out of being underwater! How can you make this fun?!" the machop then turns to the dragonite
"I'm sorry, but unless youve got some kind of reward that is actually worth getting for doing this, I'm outta here" the machop then starts to walk towards the exit

L: Dragonite: "Oh, right, your reward! Totally forgot to mention it, you'll each be getting $5,000 for this!"

Snake: "Woah, okay, totally worth it to me then!"

S: that makes the machop stop and turn around
"Did you say...$5,000 dollars?! There's no way! Thats so much money!! More money then ive ever seen... but... I still don't know... bump it to $20,000 dollars and then maybe ill consider it, $5,000 isnt gonna last me that long, heh, plus we are staying there for 24 hours, if it was 12 hours then yeah $5,000 is fine, but not for 24 hours"

L: Dragonite: "Hm... Give me a minute, I'll have to talk to some people about that." He goes over to talk to the other scientists. After a couple minutes, he returns. "Got it, $20,000 for this, and that's still for each of you."

The snake smiles over at the machop. "Nice one!"

S: "Your actually gonna give us 20 grand here?? Well now its really hard to say no" the machop looks at the exit which is a few feet away from him before looking back at the tank, sighing heavily
"You got me, you got me...I'll do it now...as much as this is really gonna scare me..." the machop then walks back to the snake and the dragonite

L: Dragonite: "Now, since you two won't be able to talk out loud much while you're in there, we've got a couple headbands for you two that'll let you talk through telepathy, both to each other and a special computer we've got that'll make those thoughts audibly if you focus on it." He hands the snake and the machop the headbands.

The snake puts hers on. "Never heard of a computer that could be targeted with telepathy... You guys make some pretty cool stuff."

S: the machop puts his on too, shivering with intense fear
"I'm not talking in there regardless if I have to hold my breath for so long, which is still so scary! Please tell me you'll let us get actual air at some point during the 24 hours"

L: Dragonite: "We unfortunately don't intend on giving you air partway through aside from emergencies, it might throw off the results of the test. Sorry."

S: "Seriously?!?! Come on!!! You can't like make an exception or something?! I'm actually gonna go insane if I don't get to properly breathe at some point! Ughhh!!! Now I don't know if that money is gonna be worth it..." the machop is having second thoughts on this

L: The dragonite sighs. "Alright, how's this: We'll give you enough air for 8 total breaths. When to get them is up to you, but once they're out, that's it. Hopefully that's not going to mess things up."

Snake: "I think I'll be fine with not getting any at all, so I'll save them all for you."

S: "...fine, better then nothing I guess... lets just...get this over with... as long as I still get paid for doing this then I'm good..." as much as the machop doesn't want to, he can't delay this anymore

L: Dragonite: "Oh, and one more thing. Sni-tii, please refrain from using your transmutation magic during the test, that might cause issues for both the test AND whoever's affected."

Sni-tii: "Right, yeah, I was already planning on not doing it."

S: "Oh, so your name is Sni-tii? Nice to meet you, I'm Max" he was happy he finally got to learn the name of the snake
"I guess NOW we can get started..."

L: Sni-tii: "Good to meet you, Max. Hopefully this'll go well for both of us..."

Dragonite: "Okay, head on over to the tank, and we'll get you two inside. Make sure to grab some nose plugs as well, so you don't get any of the liquid in your nostrils."

Sni-tii: "Got it." She starts heading over to the entrance of the tank.

S: "I was never fond of nose plugs... but I guess I dont have a choice now..." Max heads to the enternce of the tank as well

L: Sni-tii: "Better than needing to get that liquid out and not having any air to do it with..."

After getting some nose plugs and putting them in place, Sni-tii looks over at Max. "Let me try out that telepathy headband..." Without her audibly saying anything, Max would hear Sni-tii's voice in his head. "Is this working?"

S: max reluctantly gets some nose plugs as well as puts them in place before nodding to Sni-tii, she can hear Max's voice in her head as he replies
"Yes i think so, can you hear me fine?"

L: Sni-tii: "Yep, I can. It'll be nice to be able to talk to each other without wasting any air, especially since we really aren't going to be getting much more."

S: "Well except for the 8 breaths of air I'm getting, but yeah... oh boy, its time I guess...I'm so scared!"

L: "It'll be fine, I'm sure they all know what they're doing. This might not be so bad once we get in there..."

S: "If you say so..." Max tries to calm himself down
"Alright, l-lets do this now"

L: "Yep, time to get on with it..." Sni-tii heads into the airlock that's the entrance to the tank of liquid. "Savor breathing normally while you can..."

S: Max whimpers at that but he too enters the airlock
"Don't say it like that youll make more scared!!!"

L: "Right, sorry, that definitely didn't help. Just... Try not to panic when we're fully submerged."

The outer door of the airlock is closed as final preparations are made.

S: "I'll try, but no promises...." max keeps shivering with fear

L: Soon, there's a few beeps, before the airlock begins to fill with the blue liquid that had been visible in the tank. Sni-tii doesn't bother properly preparing her lungs, intending to just take a single deep breath at the last moment.

S: max immediately starts to panic as the blue fluid starts to fill up the tank
"Wait!! I didnt wanna do it like this!!! Why couldn't have just entered the tank from above!?!? No no no!!!!"

L: "I wish they'd done that too, these always scare me a bit... It's gonna be okay, you won't drown!" In her head, she adds "At least I hope so...", without realizing she's sent that to Max's head.

S: "You hope so?!?! Ok, thats it i want out!!! Lemme out!!! Please!" it was too late already, the liquid was almost at the top

L: "Oh crap, I forgot you'd hear that! Look, even if something goes wrong, I know they'll get us out right away, we don't have to worry!"

S: max shakes his head as the liquid was gonna fill to the top, and eventually he had no choice but to take the last breath and let it flow over his head

L: Sni-tii gets the deepest breath she can before holding it, and switches to the telepathy given by the headband. "Okay, keep your mouth closed, and try your best to relax at least a little... The hard part's over."

S: As the doors to the rest of the tank open up, Max switches to telepathy as well, even in his mind he was whimpering, staying where he is as of now
"Relax?! How can you expect me to relax right now when I'm too full of stress and emotion!!!" even tho the noseplug helps to make sure air doesnt escape from his nose, that didnt stop his mouth from releasing air bubbles into the liquid, he's that scared that he can't hold his breath properly

L: "J-just, um... I'd say just breathe, but that won't help right now... Try to focus on anything else, ANYTHING." Sni-tii hugs Max, covering his mouth for him as well.

S: "I can't sni-tii! This is all I'm focused on right now, I really need to breathe already!"
Max hugs sni-tii back, he was so bad at breath holding that even with the liquid supposingly giving him oxygen, it wasnt enough to calm him down fully
"M-maybe I should just use one of my 8 breathes of air that the dragonite promised me, just to get a better start..."

L: "Maybe, yeah... Once you're relaxed from that, you should be able to go a long time without getting any more."

S: "I hope so" max then swims around the tank to find where the dragonite placed the air he was promised, but he can't find it anywhere
"Strange...I thought that dragonite put in the air, where is it?!" he turns to where the outside was visible
"Hey!!!"

L: The dragonite is outside, looking a bit awkward. "So, um... I kind of didn't check whether we'd be able to actually give you that air I promised. And, we can't. I'm sorry, you won't be getting more air during this."

Sni-tii: "Ugh, as if he wasn't terrified enough..."

S: "ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?!??!?" max is mad but also more terrifed now because of that
"You tricked me!!! No way I'm gonna be surviving this now! His face was turning red, and it hasn't even been 30 minutes, the oxygen in the liquid clearly not doing its job for Max with how scared he was, he pounds his hands on the glass doors of the tank, glaring at the dragonite

L: Dragonite: "P-please try to calm down, I didn't trick you, I just didn't know!"

Sni-tii: "Max, it's gonna be okay! Think about how much money you'll get out of this if you don't give up!"

S: "I don't think that money is gonna be worth it anymore! I just...I just" max breaks down and starts crying, covering his mouth and visibly tearing up as he sinks to the bottom of the tank, by now a total of 15 minutes has passed, and Max is struggling super hard already

L: Sni-tii coils herself next to Max. "I don't know what else I can do to help... Maybe we could just, like... Watch TV or something? Any kind of distraction from this would help..."

S: "I don't know anymore Sni-tii, point is, I hate this! I can't do this! I won't last! I can't calm down" max continues crying and covering his eyes, all of this not helping his air supply... there were also video games, and as much as Max loves to play video games, even that probably won't help, but he has to try something to help

L: "Just sitting here being miserable isn't going to help... We have to think of something." Sni-tii starts searching around the room for anything Max might like.

S: "Well, i like video games, and I know the dragonite mentioned that, even tho i don't think ill help, I guess i could try it..."

L: "Alright, I'll see what we have. I probably won't be able to join in, since... Well, no hands. But I'll watch, for sure." Sni-tii slithers over to where the games are, and begins listing out the options to Max.

S: max swims over to the options, then spots Just Dance as one of the options, he blushes a bit in embarrassment
"Heh, this game I play all the time for a workout, its much more fun then doing basic sit-ups and push-ups and all that, hmm I wonder if ill work underwater..."

L: "That's actually one of the few games I might be able to play... We can try that out, sure, I just might still not be very good."

S: "Hey, ill actually make me feel better knowing ill win in this game, but I guess we'll see what happens"
Max then launches Just Dance on the TV, shocked to see it working even in this liquid, for the first time since he found this tank, Max was actually smiling just a little bit, hes trying to blur out the needs for air

L: Sni-tii gets herself next to Max, ready to get started. "Alright, I'm not too familiar with this game, but I'll probably figure it out."

S: "Its easy, just copy what the character does on screen as accurate as possible, we'll start off easy"
Max goes to select a dance that'll be easy for sni-tii to follow along

L: "Sounds simple enough..."

As the game starts, Sni-tii struggles a bit at first since she obviously can't copy it too well without limbs, but as she starts angling herself to sort of approximate what the game expects her to be doing, it starts going better. "Ah, there we go!"

S: Max notices Sni-tii getting better and nods in approval
"Hey look at that, your getting better already, uh oh...your giving me a run for my money! I wont let you win that easily!" Max giggles out a few bubbles as he continues to dance along with the character on screen, so far beating sni-tii

L: "Ha, I'm at a huge disadvantage and you STILL have to take me seriously!" Sni-tii is clearly having a great time despite not being in the lead.

S: "Uhh I take competition seriously! Especially just dance! I'm very competitive in this game!"

eventually the song ends and Max wins it!

"Looks like I was victorious, but you weren't too far off, I'm surprised, lets play again! How about you pick a song this time?"

its been close to an hour now, so far so good

L: "Alright, um... This one." Sni-tii picks another song that she hopes is relatively easy.

S: Max nods at that
"Good choice, thats one of my favorites, good luck!"
so max and sni-tii spend the next hour dancing to songs in just dance, with sni-tii actually winning a few times in the process, which shocks Max a bit, now its been a little over 2 hours since they were in the tank, Max's need to breathe has been forgotten in this moment

L: While Sni-tii sort of wants to comment on how much better Max is doing, she knows reminding him of the situation might not be good.

As much as she wants to keep playing, she eventually starts getting tired. "I think we should take a break after this song, I'm exhausted from all the dancing..."

S: "Me too, I'm honestly fine with stopping right now, I'm getting tired..." Max turns off the game and lays down on the bottom of the tank to relax for a moment, he's forgotten about the situation hes in for now... and possibly forgetting about holding his breath

L: Soon, the two hear the dragonite's voice again as he stands at the window. "Could you two come here? We just need to do a few quick tests to make sure you're still fully healthy."

Sni-tii: "Fair enough, one sec." She starts slithering over to him.

S: "Aww why?" Max sighs out a few bubbles before making his way over to him, before he notices his bubbles and finally snaps back to reality
"Oh no, I forgot I was doing this 24 hour thing!"

L: Dragonite: "Well, you were at least doing a lot better once you started playing with Sni-tii!"

Sni-tii: "Told you distracting yourself would help!"

S: "Well i would have loved to keep forgetting about it! Now I'm scared again! Is this over yet?? I can feel myself needing actual air..." he covers his mouth for the moment, his face blushing red

L: Dragonite: "There's still a long time to go... Just try your best to calm yourself down again. If you can keep your oxygen usage down, we've found that being in that fluid can actually refresh the air in your lungs."

Sni-tii: "Oh, that's cool!"

S: "I don't think if I can do that tho! I feel like this is all i can handle... I've been releasing air left and right! I don't think its refreshing my lungs! Its a lie!"

L: Dragonite: "Oh, no, not refilling them. It'll just restore the oxygen of what air is in them, it won't give more air. I don't think there's a way to actually make air like that..."

Sni-tii: "Better than nothing... We'll find some way to help you relax again after this, don't worry."

S: "Ughh, whatever!" Max was upset, but it was for $20,000 so he kept quiet about it and just waited to see what the dragonite wanted

L: Dragonite: "Now, we'll just quickly make sure you're both still physically and mentally okay. What's 17 plus 25?"

Sni-tii: "That's... 42."

S: "I was never good at math in school... so...40?" max swims away in embarrassment as he knows that answer has to be wrong

L: Dragonite: "Well, at least you seem to know that's probably wrong. It's 42."

Sni-tii: "Still pretty close, Max."

S: "Dang it!! That's so embarrassing, please no more math problems! I'm suffering enough as it is"

L: Dragonite: "That was the only one, don't worry. Next up, what's the reward we promised you two?"

Sni-tii: "No way I'd forget that, $20,000!"

S: "Yeah! $20K! I am not gonna forget that at all! Come on now! Being in this tank sucks! I just wanna breathe fresh air again...ive never gone this long without breathing normally..."

L: The dragonite laughs. "Kind of knew you two would remember that."

A few more tests are done, and soon the dragonite is satisfied. "Alright, you two seem to be doing well. I'll check in with you again in another couple hours."

Sni-tii: "Okay. Hopefully these don't get too annoying."

S: "Yeah, me too... how about we watch TV now? You ever watched any of the nickelodeon sitcoms? They are really good"

L: Sni-tii: "I've never watched much TV, but it's certainly better than nothing right now. Let's see if anything good's on." She slithers back over in front of the TV.

S: "Ok"
Max swims over to the tv and sits down in front of it, getting the remote
"Oh nice, this tv has on demand, that means we can watch any show we want, lets see if I can put on that sitcom..."
he finds a sitcom he thinks Sni-tii will like and puts on its first episode

L: "Alright, this one looks good... Hopefully I don't laugh all my air out, heh."

S: "Heh heh, no guarantees there, this show is really funny!"
they watch a couple of episodes of the show, and of course, its as funny as Max mentioned it, in fact there were so caught up in the show that they ended up watching every season of the show, which took a good amount of time, roughly 8 hours, and Max was laughing out bubbles at the funny parts, not even caring at the moment that he's still submerged, they even ignored the dragonite when it was time for the check ins...now a total of 11 and a half hours passes by, with Max's face fully blue from all the laughing, but he's at least happy and calm...for now

L: Despite her best efforts, Sni-tii can't help but laugh out quite a bit of her air too, ending up having her lungs be mostly empty by the time the show's done.

"Man, that was great! I've never marathoned a show like that before, but I guess having a friend with you makes that pretty easy!"

S: "Ive never done that either! But man that was fun! We have to do it again!"
Max doesnt notice his face was turning fully blue and almost purple

L: "Oh jeez, your face... We definitely laughed out too much air, this might not have been a good idea..." Sni-tii's face is more blue than normal too.

S: "What?? Oh no... now i feel my lungs are on fire! I-I think im gonna inhale this liquid! No!!" Max covers his mouth before swimming frantically over and pounding the glass of the tank for the dragonite to get over here
"Hey!!! Get over here!!!! We're in trouble!!!"

L: The dragonite rushes over. "No wonder you're not doing well, you ignored me when I tried to do the last few checkups! I was trying to tell you two to try not to laugh so much!"

Sni-tii: "We really should've listened, this is kind of bad..."

S: "Sorry! We were having too much fun! But now...it came with consequences... look i am NOT about to inhale this liquid and I don't want my new snake friend to drown either, we've been in here long enough, so either you let us outta here and call this off or your about to watch a machop drown! What's it gonna be??" Max looks at the dragonite pleadingly, even tho they were so close to being at least halfway done, Max isnt gonna last any longer holding his breath as he whimpers and shivers from the lack of oxygen

L: The dragonite sighs. "It does seem like the fluid's not giving you two enough oxygen anyway, we need to get you out of there for safety. Head for that airlock."

Sni-tii: "Good, I'm exhausted, and I'm not sure I'd be able to sleep in here..." She starts going toward the airlock, trying not to lose more air.

S: Max quickly goes into the airlock as well, he was excited to get to breathe normally again
"Please tell me youll still pay us for putting up with this!"

L: Dragonite: "It's mostly our fault that you're leaving early, so yes, you'll be getting your full reward."

Sni-tii: "Nice! I was sort of worried you'd cut it in half or something..."

S: "That would have been bad... but glad we are getting the full reward
soon, the airlock gets drained out of the liquid, and Max gasps heavily for breath when he can, getting his noseplugs out before switching to regular speech
"Hah...hah...hah...Oh sweet air! I missed you so much! I'm never doing this again!"

L: Sni-tii gasps, then sighs in relief, taking out her noseplugs and talking out loud at last. "Finally... It's kind of surreal how long it's been since we got to breathe..." She takes off the headband as well.

Dragonite: "Sorry it was so scary for you, Max. Maybe we should've actually told you in advance what this was going to be..."

S: max nods in agreement and takes off his headband too
"Yeah, you definitely should have at least told me what was going on! I would have said no a long time ago!"
Max then steps out of the airlock and waits for his payment

L: The dragonite hands Max and Sni-tii a check each, both for the promised $20,000. "If we ask you two to help out again, we'll make sure to actually make it clear what you'll be doing."

Sni-tii: "Definitely a good idea..." She smiles as she thinks about what to do with all the money.

S: "For sure" Max smiles as well, so happy to have this check
"Well, I'm getting outta here, it was so nice to spend some time with you sni-tii, I hope we meet each other again!" he happily hugs sni-ii

L: Sni-tii hugs him back. "Yeah, we managed to make that a lot of fun! We can definitely hang out again sometime!"

S: "I hope so!! Well, see you guys later!"
Max waves goodbye before he runs off to cash in his check, so happy that its all done
