"Bubbly checkpoint"

Cirrus charged through the ocean, shivering and burbling in a desperate need for air as he trained in holding his breath. He was running a route that would push him to his limit, with only a handful of breaths planned into it. Having gone almost 300 miles since his previous breath, the dragon closed in on both drowning and reaching his next checkpoint... Thankfully, the latter came first, which wasn't always the case.

Some of the rocks nearby had openings in their tops, with little bubbles coming from them, and occasionally much bigger ones. Quickly looking around, Cirrus rushed toward one that was making one of those substantial bubbles and caught the air in his mouth, gasping it down. The blue on his face receded to just being on his cheeks, then turned back to purple and then red. Once the bubble was fully inhaled, he bolted away, wasting no time in resuming both his trip and his training. The next air source would be an air pocket in a large stone arch that was continually refreshed by nearby plants, about 250 miles away... Hopefully he wouldn't forget where it was this time.

Yeah, this is definitely pretty Sonic-style. It wasn't my intent, but having him rushing through the ocean and stopping to breathe in a bubble is very much like Sonic games.

squirtlerocks07 and I did an RP based on this.

S: One day, Cirrus, an eastern dragon had decided he wants to push his breath holding today, so he's planned a route that will definitely push himself to the limit, with very few air sources along the way. As he was getting ready for it, a Garchomp was standing close to Cirrus, wearing a pair of swimming goggles, it seems they too were gonna go for a dive. They didnt notice Cirrus just yet

L: As Cirrus does some stretches to prepare, he notices the garchomp. "Hey there. Don't mind me, I won't be around here long, just gonna be doing some breath holding training."

S: "Hmm?" The garchomp happens to see Cirrus, his eyes going wide
"Whoa, never seen a creature like you before, and hey I'm doing some breath hold training too, what a coincidence!"

L: "Oh, cool! I'd offer to let you join me, but what I've got in mind is probably WAY more intense than what you're doing. And, I'm a dragon, by the way."

S: "Hey, I'm a Garchomp, we're fierce creatures! I can handle anything, what exactly do you have in mind? Oh and, names Don, nice to meet you"

L: "Well... First of all, I'm Cirrus. Now, my plan for today is to dive down here, then swim to a spot a few hundred miles away, breathe in a big bubble there, then swim another couple hundred miles to an air pocket, then all the way back here, all without going to the actual surface until the end."

S: Don's eyes widen again, theres a flicker of fear on his face but he quickly shakes it off

"Oh my, now THATS a challenge! Definitely not what I had planned, I was just gonna go to the bottom and relax to see how long I can go on a single breath. But now that, my goodness! Forget what I had planned, I like a good challenge! Please let me join you!"

L: "You sure? It took me years to be able to do the whole route without inhaling water, and even now I can't manage that every time... But if you're serious, I wouldn't mind having someone join me for it for once."

S: "Yes im sure! I can do this! I know i can! Ill be a great challenge"

deep down, the thought of inhaling water did scare Don a little

L: "Well, let's do it then! Get some deep breaths, and be ready to be patient. I can hold my breath a bit over 45 minutes, so that's about how long it takes to get to those bubbles." Cirrus starts deeply breathing.

S: "Wait wait wait hold up, 45 MINUTES!??! Thats like double my record, mine is 20 minutes! Oh boy, this really is gonna push my limits..."

with Don having more hints of fear on his face, he tries to calm himself down by taking some deep breathes as well

L: "I definitely should've said that sooner... Remember to just surface if you don't think you can make it, but try to still at least go as long as possible so you're still training."

S: "W-well, as long as we arent that deep underwater then hopefully I can surface easily if I absolutely have to, this is so embarrassing, I'm supposted to be tough, but here I am shaking a leaf!"

Don blushes a bit from embarrassment

L: "One alternate path does involve going pretty deep, but we don't have to do that one. And don't worry, everyone's got something they're scared of, nothing to be ashamed of."

S: "I guess even Garchomps are scared of things... well, I wanted to do this and I don't wanna back out of it so...lets just get this training session started"

L: "Yep, it's about time to get going. You might want to hold onto me unless you can swim REALLY fast, I can go a few hundred miles per hour." Cirrus gets into the water, staying on the surface for the moment.

S: "Oh dang, I can swim fast but not THAT fast, so...I guess ill just hold onto you then"

Don gets into the water as well, before holding onto Cirrus' body

L: "Alright, one last deep breath, then we'll start! And don't worry, I've got all the directions memorized, we'll stay on course no problem."

S: "Alright, lets go..."

after taking a few moments to compose himself with how nervous he was starting to get, Don eventually takes a final deep breath and holds it in tightly, he already has his goggles on so hes good to go

L: With that, Cirrus gets a deep gasp of his own, then dives underwater. He starts quickly picking up speed as he goes out into the ocean, rushing along to get to the first air source quickly.

S: Don was surprised at how fast Cirrus can really go, but he soon closes his eyes and focuses on holding his breath, letting some tiny bubbles loose from his nostrils

L: For a while, the swim isn't particularly eventful. The underwater landscape zooms past at incredibly high speed, and Cirrus stays focused, barely any bubbles leaving him.

S: Don opened his eyes again to see how fast they were going again, still incredibly impressed before he closes them again to focus himself, trying his best to not let anymore bubbles loose even as his face goes a little red

L: Gradually, Cirrus is starting to blush as well, but he pays no mind to his need to breathe, determined to make it in time and hoping Don will be able to manage it too.

S: Don's face quickly turns more red as times goes on, his face now fully red as he lets out an audible grunt of strain, trying to sort of awkwardly cover his mouth while still holding on Cirrus

L: Hearing that grunt, Cirrus looks back at Don in a bit of concern. "Hblang ibln thblere, iblt miblght stblill ble abl whblile..."

S: That made Don grow a little worried, he wasnt sure if hes gonna make it to the first checkpoint

"I-i alblready fbleel a nbleed to brbleathe thblo!"

L: "Sblo dblo Ibl... Ibl'd ble reblallbly imblpreblssebld iblf yoblu mablde iblt." Cirrus tries to speed up a bit, though it doesn't make much of a difference.

S: "I-ill kbleep trblying to hblold obln..." Don keeps doing his best to hold his breath, hes already pasted his record by now, and his face grows blue

L: Cirrus' face is soon fully red, and now he's making strained grunting sounds as well. Bubbles are beginning to be lost from him more often, before he covers his nostrils with a paw, puffing his cheeks a bit bigger.

S: Don's own cheeks puff a bit more then they were, really trying to hang in there now

L: Eventually, Cirrus' face goes blue, his cheeks now comically large... In the distance, a patch of geyser-like rocks is becoming visible, with big bubbles coming from them! "Nbl-neblarlbly thblere!"

S: Don tries his best to stay relaxed but his face turns purple now, he tries to cover his mouth and nose but bubbles still escape through them

"H-hblurry, I cblant gblo mublch loblnger!"

L: The two quickly arrive at the bubbles, and Cirrus grabs one to give it to Don, wanting them to get air first since they're closer to drowning. "Brbleatblhe iblt ibln, qublick!"

S: Seeing the air bubble, Don quickly grabs it carefully and inhales it deeply, his purple blush fading away back to normal

"P-phblew, thblat was cloblse..."

L: Cirrus gets another bubble and gasps that one down, his face going back to normal as well, before starting to rush away from the area. "Riblght, nblo tiblme tblo wablste! Jublst thble onble bublble eablch, thblen wble moblve obln!"

S: "A-alblright..." Don then closes his eyes once more and goes back to focusing on his breath holding

L: Once again, things go back to being uneventful along the way to the next air source, at least for now. Cirrus gets back to his full speed, wanting to get to the next air source as soon as possible.

S: by now, Don's lungs were getting a little tired, his face already flushing red, but he keeps his eyes closed and keeps focusing

L: Cirrus doesn't seem much worse for wear himself, just having a very slight blush and no other visible strain.

S: as the two continue on, they happened to come across a very dangerous creature ahead, a great white shark, and it was blocking their way forward, since Cirrus mentioned a deeper path that goes to the same air pocket, it may look like the two will have to go deeper underwater to avoid the shark. Don opened his eyes and shouted at Cirrus when he sees them

"SBLTOP!!"

L: "MMGH!" Cirrus barely manages to come to a stop in time, being just far enough away that the shark isn't noticing the two. "Crblap... Okblay, wble nebled tblo tablke thble deblepeblr pablth."

S: "Whblat?? Nblo nblo nblo thblats tblhe oblne thbling im scblared of dbloing! I-i dblont wablnna gblo debleeper!! Yblou sblaid its vblery deeblp!"

L: "Wobluld yoblu rabltheblr deblal wiblth abl shblark? Ibl cabln hbleal frblom jublst ablout anblythbling, yoblu cabln't, Ibl'm noblt riblskiblng yoblu geblttiblng hblurt oblr woblrse."

S: Don whimpers out some bubbles, they were wasting time just floating here, he takes a look at the surface for a moment, considering giving up...but he's already come pretty far and he can't just give up, so he just nods

"...Fbline... bublt tblry to kbleep mble relaxbled, im gblonna likblely be mblore nervblous"

L: Cirrus nods, and starts going deeper down, switching to the alternate path he'd mentioned earlier. This one does indeed go pretty deep, the surface soon no longer being visible and just getting even farther away.

S: Immediately when Don notices the surface not being visible he gets very worried, his body shivering a bit in fear as bubbles constantly escape him

L: "Itbl's okblay, iblf anblythbling gobles wrblong Ibl cabln hblave ubls ablt the sublrfablce ibln seblconblds. Wble mably abls webll ble onbly abl feblw feblet dowbln."

S: "Bublt iblts sbltill scblary beiblng thblis fblar unblder, jblust hblurry ublp! Mmm!!!"

Don's face is blue again as hes closing in on his limit again

L: "Riblght, jublst... Dblo yoblur beblst..." Cirrus focuses on the path ahead, trying to go faster, though this area is more complicated than the one above would've been. His face is entirely red by now.

S: Don was dangerously close to inhaling the water around them, trying his best to keep himself covered but its really hard to do so, bubbles still slipping away

L: Before much longer, the path leads back up near the surface at last, Cirrus now rapidly approaching some stone formations. "Okblay, onble oblf thblese hblas abln aiblr poblckeblt, webl'll tablke abl brbleak thblere!"

S: Don couldnt even talk with how focused he was on holding his breath, his face turning purple again

L: Cirrus moves between each of the formations, his face going blue as he tries to find the one with air... "Thblis onble!" He quickly surfaces into the air pocket, gasping and panting while his blush starts to fade.

S: Don quickly gasps hard and pants while catching his breath, his own blush fading

"Hah...hah...hah, oh dear arceus! My lungs are killing me! This training is exhausting me!"

L: "T-told you this would be tough... But we're mostly done, we just have to get back to where we started now..."

S: "Are you crazy?? After getting pushed to my limit twice I'm done with breath hold training, arent you tired too? Can we just go up to the surface and be done? Please? Ive impressed you enough as it is and I probably added some time to my previous record"

L: "I really don't blame you... I'm not that tired myself, but if you want to back out, I can bring you back to shore. You've done great so far though, you've gone pretty far past your record!"

S: "Yeah, I got at least that, but I dont want you to push yourself anymore either, it wont sit well with me if you end up getting tired unexpectedly and drown...if im backing out, I want you to be done too..."

L: "...Yeah, I don't think I'm feeling doing the last leg of it today... Alright, we'll stop here then. I'll get us back to shore, then we can just hang out if you want."

S: "Thank you...I appreciate that, and yeah we can hang out if you want, i wouldnt mind that"

L: "Okay, a quick dive to get back to the surface then, then we'll go back to land." Cirrus holds his breath and dives.

S: Don holds his own breath as well, knowing this is gonna be quick

L: And sure enough, it's only a few seconds before both of them surface, with Cirrus exhaling. "It'll be a quick flight from here. As fast as I am underwater, I can go even faster in the air."

S: Don just exhales as well

"Really?? Well I do love fast rides in the air, feels great with the wind in your face going so speedy!"

L: "Then hold on tight, I'll go as fast as I can!" Cirrus starts flying along toward the distant shore, quickly picking up speed and going much faster than he'd been underwater!

S: "Whoaaa!!!" Don quickly holds on tight to Cirrus as they go so fast, an instant smile was on his face
"Whooohooo!!! Its like a roller coaster!!!"

L: "This kind of speed never really gets old for me!" Cirrus has a big smile too, and skims one of his feet along the surface of the water.

S: "This is incredible! I love going super fast like this! Faster! Faster!! Wheeee!!!!"

Even Don's tail wags a bit as he was so happy to being traveling so fast, hes hoping it never ends

L: And it does go on for a good amount of time, given how far the two had gotten out into the ocean. Eventually though, they're getting close to land again, and Cirrus starts to slow down a little. "Almost there now, unfortunately... But we can definitely do this again sometime."

S: "Aww...yeah I definitely wanna do this again, that was really fun!"

once they get to land, Don hops off of Cirrus and gives him a smile

"Thanks for the training Cirrus, now I can go brag to my friends how much better ive gotten at breath holding. If you ever wanna hang out again my home is only a couple blocks away from the beach, its the big purple house, can't miss it!"

L: "Got it, I'll remember where that's at. Guess I'll be seeing you then, Don!"

S: "Sounds good then, see you later my friend!"

and so with a wave goodbye, Don heads off back home, taking off his goggles in the process, he was pretty satisfied with everything that happened, minus that one incident
