this begs the question could John make it down there and use the equipment himself?

I mean, physically? He could definitely make it down to disconnect one of them, but each section he tries to separate increases the risk of the zombies catching him or catching onto the plan.

That and it does make it a lot more complicated to calculate the de-orbiting of each section when it's done one at a time like that.
