Miles is a soft-spoken and gentle boy that likes making people happy. He is the only kid at school who can handle Lapis' abundance of energy.
Miles did not understand what his friendship with Lapis would entail.
Miles is best described as a quiet, reserved, yet friendly boy that likes playing videogames and sports with his friends. While being quite energetic, Miles is also quite clumsy and prone to tripping over nothing or getting smacked in the face with sports balls. This tendency for accidents is what resulted in him getting covered in bruises and bandages. The big scar on his chest was the result of him falling out of a tree he was climbing.
Miles doesn't have a lot of close friends due to him being so introverted. Although well-liked by the other kids in school, he doesn't like being overly expressive and usually spends most conversations just listening to the other person rather than speaking on his own. Miles wouldn't end up getting a close friend until moving to a new school and meeting a girl by the name of Lapis.
Lapis is an extremely out-going girl and loves talking to other people. She is a well-meaning person and very friendly, but is also very selfish and quite oblivious when it comes to the feelings of others. Any time Lapis engages in a conversation with someone, she always tries to make the conversation about herself and usually won't even let the other person have a chance to speak. Because of this, Lapis never had any friends before Miles came along.
Miles is the only kid at their school that can tolerate talking with Lapis. Because he is so quiet and prefers listening to other people speak, he never cared when Lapis would continue to rattle on and on about herself. This led the two of them to become best friends and for Lapis to begin developing feelings for Miles. It was as if Miles was the only person that understood her.
Lapis decided to invite Miles to join her in a personal project of hers. She created a stream she hosted every night and wanted Miles to help her out with it. Miles agreed, thinking he would just be doing behind-the-scenes stuff. He didn't realize Lapis wanted him to guest star on her show every week.
Of course, spending so much time with Lapis meant Miles drew the attention of Lapis' guardian, Vera.
Vera was extremely protective of Lapis and wanted to spare her from the troubles many young girls face growing up. One of these troubles was having her heart broken by some careless boy. Lapis might've had an obvious crush on Miles, but Vera could tell Miles only thought of Lapis as a friend. If Lapis ever shared her feelings with Miles, Vera worried he might reject her and make Lapis sad. In order to prevent this from ever happening, Vera took matters into her own hands.
Vera decided she would do everything in her power to get rid of Miles.
Vera continued to harass Miles any chance she got, doing her best to drive Miles away from Lapis. Her strategies proved to be very effective as Miles soon tried avoiding Lapis and stopped agreeing to appear in her live-streams. Lapis, not being one to give up, would always proceed to pester Miles and emotionally manipulate him into coming back onto her next stream regardless of what he really wanted.
Turns out, Lapis can be a lot more persuasive than Vera.
Miles never stopped appearing on Lapis' streams, and therefore never stopped drawing negative attention from Vera. If he couldn't escape Vera by avoiding Lapis, Miles figured he needed to learn how to take care of himself. That's when Miles came across a woman named Cyrene.
Cyrene agreed to train Miles, taking him in every other weekend for training. Her methods were brutal, but effective. Sadly, they didn't help much when dealing with Vera.

Miles does eventually wind up developing feelings for Lapis, despite their unhealthy relationship as kids. By the time they are both 19 years old, Miles and Lapis start a relationship with each other and even properly partner up to run Lapis' show together. Both wind up learning a lot about themselves in their time together.
Miles didn't realize it when he was young, but he actually had a repressed desire to be tied up and tickled so long as it was done lightly. A part of him enjoyed some of the torment Lapis put him through, but he was never able to recognize this because most of Lapis' antics were much too intense for Miles' enjoyment. When the two started dating and Miles started to embrace his role in Lapis' show, Miles was able to convince Lapis to start dialing back the intensity and focus more on making the experience enjoyable for both Miles and her broader audience.
This change proved to be beneficial, as their audience almost doubled shortly after it was clear Miles was enjoying the experience a lot more.
