The Dino Daycare Timeline
I am going to hell
What if... a Dino Daycare video game, where you're the New Kid to the Daycare, was made? I always had this idea if it did, then it would have a main character which you could play as!

Now, Ideally it would be cool if you could create a custom player character out of like Dinosaur species presets and the like, but I feel like that's only ideal if the game was in 3D. Plus I feel like there's going to be some limitation to that. But if it was in 2D, how about a fixed Player Character instead? I feel like you can make them as highly expressional, and even center some games and such around their design!

So here's my design! I wanted to make them at the very least appealing regardless of who you are, and perhaps someone you can at least identify with to some degree. They're a Brachylophosaurus, a kinda standard looking hadrosaur

I enjoyed creating this! It was fun designing a character that's meant to be a bit generic, but also look exciting! I also designed them in a way that regardless of how you look at them, they could easily align on any part of the Gender Spectrum.

This would be a great game to play, just like snoot game but set in a daycare!
(Wonder who would the VA (voice actors) would be for the game’s main cast?)

What's the game genre?

I'd say a mixture of RPG and life sim, skin to something like disco elysium meets the sims

I was assuming something along the lines of Princess Maker or Long Live The Queen.

I can also see some elements of games like “goodbye volcano high” in the mix

Can lower reflexes cause issues with potty training on the whole "realizing you need to go" aspect?
Yipthecoyotepup

Yes. But like all skills, they can be raised over time.

Would there be a limit to how high your skills start out at the beginning of the game?

I think I wrote something on FA which explains how starting stats might work:

I like the idea that if you start out with have any stat that's 7 or higher, there will be a penalty to experience gained in that area. compared to having 6. So actually having 5 or 6s across the board isn't a bad idea. As while you will struggle in some areas early on, you will potentially end up gaining more experience overall.

Another idea I have is that you can only have one stat that has a 1 in it, as it is considered a legitimate disability and will have you start out differently
For instance, having 1 Strength starts you in Crutches, and having 1 Stamina starts you with an Asthma Inhaler, either option will cause you to be exempt from many physical activities.
Having 1 in Reflexes will make it so that certain dialogue boxes will deliberately not appear, causing you to miss certain events.

Having 1 intelligence will make your character near illiterate, 1 Knowledge makes it so that you might not understand how even simple objects like toys work, and having 1 Social Skill will deliberately give you terrible speech and dialogue options.

While it is very hard to add even 1 to any stat, if your character starts out with 5 or 6 of a stat and heavily invests in it, they could potentially end up with an 8 or even a 9 in said stat, while at best, a character with 7 in said stat might only go as high as 8 with a similar level of investment.

10 however is an interesting number like 1, and that you cannot have more than 1 stat above 9, which forces you to make a choice in essentially min-maxxing, do you become unstoppable in everything strength related, but not keep up in other areas? I mean, even some strength checks still potentially require things like Stamina, or even smarts to pull off. For instance, moving a heavy box may normally require a lot of strength, but a character with some knowledge might consider a trolley to ease the load. Is it really worth crippling yourself in other areas just so you can get the most out of one trait?

however, don't think that being a jack of all trades is a good idea either, there are plenty of skill checks that often require at least 7 or higher in a stat to accomplish, which could be essential in the early game, however, if you invest that 7 or 8, you run the risk of not being able to gain more of that stat in the future. So it's an interesting risk you'll need to take, what the game is saying is that you can't do everything alone. As others may have the stats to help you accomplish what you need. But while you can't do everything alone, there may be times you can't rely on others for help either, do you have the potential abilities to make do with your current skills? Think carefully about your skill investments, or just go in and learn the potentially hard way...

That would work out ok for me if I’d get to play this game one day!  Still nothing beats and “all-around” balance of stats for their character in my opinion of course.

Could be a fun game. Hmm, maybe I could flex my amateur gaming design skills to make something like this

I don't know a thing about coding, I have an idea of how I want it to go, but honestly I'm more of an artist than programmer/coder

Perhaps you can find some coders willing to work on this game with you if you’re doing the art

I'd love to see something like this one day. However, Amber Isle really did a great job on character customization that players made their own hybrid dinosaur/extinct mammal.
Yipthecoyotepup
3 weeks, 5 days ago
You couldn't make a sauropod in that game though, probably because the long neck would mess up animations. Also, while it is nice to be able to play as a large variety of dinos, it does make the player ask "If I'm this dino, why can't I do the thing this dino is known for? why must I be like everyone else?" Like, if I'm an Anky, why can't I use my tail club? Or, if I'm a Pterosaur, why can't I fly?

Which is why I'm thinking a fixed character, as there's an in-universe explanation as to why you're fairly generic. And since your character is fixed, I feel like they can be more expressive in things like cutscenes, or even have certain things like creative projects they've made in daycare to resemble them, as there's no need to consider a custom character.

I see. And I would assume that it's your honest opinion of Amber Isle?
Yipthecoyotepup

I think the game is fun, I played it quite a bit, although I think I only got halfway through. I made Clay in that game as my player character:

Although compared to the other Anky character in that game, Chester, I felt like my version was rather lacking.

Even so, that game makes me wanna all the characters in diapers. But, I'm keeping my expectations to a minimum.
ascendedGardevoir

I'd certainly play if that was a game

And if I had full customisability I'd try and replicate a dino mod from ark survival ascended
