The way I look at how things played out is that, in a way, it was inevitable. While it is true that Prometheus overreacted to Anax's taunting even though nothing had happened, the grim reality is that it would've happened eventually. And it sounds like the daughter he sacrificed himself for would've eventually betrayed him regardless by letting Anax kill their parent to evolve because they were blinded by love for the person that enslaved her father figure and Prometheus still would've butchered them all and been sentenced to exile.
I guess this was the best outcome for Prometheus. He would've died one way or another, wether in shame or in battle. At least in battle, he wouldn't be suffering anymore. In death, he found his mate again.
