Black Hole: The Book of Iratus, Episode 93
Chapter 921
Bai Xue raised her shield just in time, blocking the spider from biting her. The corpse of the nixman took a step back, but then jerked forward as the spider within it writhed. The lifeless body surged, its arms latching onto Bai Xue’s shield while the spider attempted to claw around it. Iratus darted in, swinging his blade to strike the spider, but it was quick—backing off just in time. That gave Bai Xue the opening she needed to thrust her spear forward, damaging the host body.
The spider was puppeting the corpse—it writhed, and the body moved like a grotesque marionette. This time, it lunged toward Iratus, but the furred dragon woman repositioned herself to block its path, shielding him no matter which way it tried to go.
Iratus: "Thanks."
He knew she couldn’t understand him, but said it anyway.
Bai Xue shoved her shield into the spider-host. Iratus flanked it from behind, stabbing at the back. As the spider twisted, trying to turn the body, Bai Xue continued hammering it with her shield. When Iratus was forced to raise his blade in defense, Bai Xue slammed the body to the ground. The spider burst free, revealing a pale carapace, and skittered to avoid Iratus’s swing.
It leapt at him—but thanks to his feline reflexes, he dodged at the last second. As he spun back to face it, Bai Xue launched herself at the spider, pinning it to the ground. Iratus seized the moment, gripping the blade of his sword for extra leverage and plunging it into the spider multiple times.
Once the struggle was over, Bai Xue stood up, and Iratus gave her a respectful nod. She returned it.
Iratus examined the corpse again—this wasn’t one of the fabric-made puppets the spiders often used. It was a real body. With a worried sigh, he and Bai Xue made their way back to the caved-in area, where Levi was the only one still waiting.
Levi: "What, no treasure?" he joked.
Iratus: "Were you aware there was another nixman down there?"
Levi: "What? Where?"
Iratus pointed back toward the cave.
Iratus: "In a room past the door—but he had one of those spider things inside him. He was a corpse being puppeted."
Levi: "Like… how they were inside the fabric puppets?"
Iratus: "Exactly. And I think there might be one more running around. There was another chair with rope, like someone else had been tied up and taken."
Levi shook his head, clearly disturbed.
Levi: "That's crazy. Can it fake being a person? Any tells?"
By now, Iratus and Bai Xue had climbed out of the hole.
Iratus: "I didn’t get a good look, but the guy was walking and talking like a normal person. So we might have a sleeper agent among us… or the creature is still wandering out there."
Levi: "Then let's get back to the others."

Chapter 922
At the garage, a chaotic maelstrom of arguments was underway.
Iratus: "What is going on now?"
He strode over to the first shouting match and grabbed Studium’s shoulder—Studium jumped at the touch.
Studium: "Whoa, hey—oh, Iratus, you’re back."
Iratus: "Tell me what’s happening."
Studium: "Well, we actually found some fuel here and things got crazy. The raccoon and the human each tried to claim it for themselves—Joe, I think his name is, even tried to start a Humvee and drive off."
Iratus tilted his head.
Iratus: "I may not know much about mechanical vehicles, but don’t they need keys or something to start?"
Studium: "Each vehicle had keys already in the ignition."
Nearby, Levi was talking to Joe, since he was the only one who spoke Joe’s language. Caedes and Pusillanimitas were embroiled in their own argument.
Pusillanimitas: "You can’t just take one for yourselves!"
Caedes: "We have nothing to do with you."
Pulvis the otterfolk interjected.
Pulvis: "And it’s time for us to leave."
Iratus stepped between them.
Iratus: "Can you two just hold on? There are a lot of people here, and we’re still in a danger zone. Please—"
He was cut off.
Pulvis: "And who do you think you are? We’re leaving, and we’re taking one of these with us."
Iratus pointed to his sword. Pulvis pulled out a knife.
Iratus: "I am losing my patience with you two."
Suddenly, Certamen was tossed to the ground.
Stridore: "Did you really think you could leave us?"
Certamen: "I was going to clear the way! I never intended to abandon everyone here."
Off to the side, Studium and Fraus wrestled Joe away from the Humvee’s door, holding him back. Iratus turned to Pulvis, who was already mid-swing with his knife. Iratus dove aside, grabbed Pulvis’s arm, and redirected his momentum—tossing him hard into one of the Humvees.
---
Chapter 923
Iratus landed two solid punches to Pulvis’s face, then drove his knee into the otterfolk’s stomach, tossing him to the ground. He glanced at Caedes, who had lunged to help Pulvis, but Bai Xue’s massive frame held the mousewoman pinned. The garage was too cramped for all this chaos, so Iratus yanked open the garage door. Several large spiders skittered away from the sudden movement.
Iratus: "Drag everyone out!"
Iratus, Fraus, and Studium began hauling people outside, with Levi and Bai Xue assisting. Once everyone was cleared out, Iratus’s group formed a guard at the garage entrance as more spiders gathered around.
Many of the freed captives protested, shrinking back whenever a spider crept too close.
Iratus: "Enough! I don’t have the patience for your greed."
He instructed Studium to grab a coil of rope. Then, Iratus organized the captives into a line and began tying them up. Levi, Bai Xue, and the shrouded figure were spared; they even helped restrain the others. Ardens, the red panda woman, sighed but offered no resistance. Certamen made excuses but didn’t struggle. Pusillanimitas and Joe the human remained expressionless as they were bound. Stridore, the rabbitfolk, continued to voice his objections loudly. Finally, Pulvis and Caedes were tied up, both wearing determined expressions.
Levi: "Should we talk about that spider-body puppet?"
Certamen: "The what now?"
Iratus: "Honestly, I don’t care if an imposter is among them. They will find out soon enough—when they get eaten."
Studium: "But does that concern us?"
Iratus: "Hardly. The only real question is whether Levi has a spider inside him."
Levi shrugged.
Levi: "I suppose I’m a prime suspect, given how long I’ve been here. But I’ve also been around Bai Xue—so I’d say that’s proof enough."
Studium: "And everyone else?"
Iratus: "Forget them. We’re leaving."
Levi: "What about the stranger?"
Iratus: "Considering how helpful she’s been—with the fuel and everything—I’d say she’s trustworthy."
The woman placed her hands on her hips.
Hooded Figure: "I have a name."
Iratus: "Then please, enlighten us."
Hooded Figure: "Vesper."
---
Chapter 924
Iratus: "Well, Vesper, welcome aboard."
Vesper: "I'm not part of whatever you’ve got going on. I just want out of here."
Iratus: "That's fine. Now—who can drive?"
Fraus: "I've never driven anything this big, but even if it was made by another species, it looks the same as all the others."
Levi: "Then I'll take the other one."
As Iratus’s group moved toward the vehicles, the tied-up captives shuffled back inside the garage—ready to whine, complain, and escape the ever-nearing spiders. Bai Xue looked perplexed by the vehicles, but understood they were their goal.
Once everyone had been corralled to the rear of the garage, Iratus’s group set about starting the Humvees. As Iratus closed his door, a spider lunged inside—so he slammed the door on it and kicked it away. Another spider blocked his window, its leg thick and massive even by the spiders' standards. Iratus forced the door open, shoving Stridore out of the way just as the rabbitfolk’s body—cracked open by the spider puppeteer—lunged at him. The head dangled, the spider inside using the body as a battering ram. Studium leapt from the other Humvee to help.
Iratus: "Drive! Clear these spiders!"
Fraus: "You’re crazy—but okay."
She floored the accelerator with Vesper in tow.
Studium: "What are we doing?"
Iratus: "Don’t worry about Fraus clear these spiders!"
Bai Xue at this point was also getting out of the vehicle to help, while Iratus drew his longsword and cut open the rabbitfolk’s body. The spider puppeteer spilled out, scrambling across the concrete as Iratus struck at it with quick thrusts.
When Fraus returned—having plowed over a cluster of spiders—Studium was free to join Iratus. Together, they trapped the spider and slew it.
Fraus spun her Humvee around, and the remaining spiders skittered back into the shadows.
Certamen: "What happened to Stridore?"
Iratus: "Dead. You two must have split up before this, right?"
Certamen: "Yeah—he went to check the garage alone. I guess that’s when he got grabbed."
Pusillanimitas: "Now it makes sense why the fuel canisters were hidden behind the desk. I wonder if the puppeted body stashed them."
Certamen: "God, why? I liked that guy."
Iratus: "Regardless, I don’t think there are any more of those things. Studium, get these people inside."
---
Chapter 925
The bound captives were forced into the vehicles, and finally they were off—ramming through the web-covered gates and leaving the spider-infested villa behind. They drove until they reached the main dirt road, at which point Iratus signaled Fraus to pull over.
Once both vehicles stopped and everyone disembarked, Iratus ordered the prisoners’ bonds to be undone.
Pusillanimitas: "Was all of this really necessary?"
Iratus: "If everyone’s going to fight over the vehicles, then yes."
Pusillanimitas: "I didn’t do anything."
Iratus: "Well, everyone’s safe now. I could debate who gets which vehicle, but after today, I say let it burn. I’m taking one—rest of you can fight over the other."
Levi had been briefing Joe on everything that had happened.
Levi: "Joe asks if there are any human settlements nearby."
Iratus: "Pfft—about a month’s travel east. However, I’d advise against Purple City. They’re brutal and savage toward anyone not part of their group."
As Iratus, Fraus, and Studium prepared to depart, the freed captives began to argue.
Levi: "Hey, wait—shouldn’t we stick together? It’s dangerous out here with all kinds of monsters. I know things got rocky, but we’ll all survive better if we travel as one."
Pulvis: "We’ll take our chances in the wilderness. It’s foolish to trust strangers—especially this group."
Iratus crossed his arms.
Iratus: "You’re not invited, anyway."
Certamen: "Is everyone really going their separate ways? I’m with Levi on this."
Fraus: "We already have our own settlement to return to."
Levi: "Then why don’t you invite us?"
Iratus: "How about a trial run?"
Fraus: "Anyone else?"
Certamen: "What—after tying us up, now you want to fully trust us?"
Iratus: "Trial. Like probation."
Certamen: "I still wasn’t trying to leave everyone behind."
Pusillanimitas stepped forward.
Pusillanimitas: "I’ll see what your settlement has to offer. Staying out here is the worst."
Certamen: "Are there other settlements?"
Iratus: "Not that I’m aware of. Of course, there’s Purple City, but they’d sooner kill you than anything else."
The raccoonfolk looked thoughtful. Bai Xue remained close to Iratus—though they couldn’t speak each others language, she seemed to defer to his direction and would decide for herself once they reached Lionhearth.
Certamen: "Fine. I don’t like the wilderness either, and I can always leave if things go south."
---
Chapter 926
Ardens, Vesper, and Joe all signaled their willingness to join the journey. Pulvis and his partner Caedes slipped aside for a quick, hushed conversation; after a minute, they too decided to see what Lionhearth had to offer and rejoined the group.
Iratus: "Very well. We’ll drive down there, and everyone can form their own opinions."
They set off, returning to Lionhearth with their newly acquired vehicles in tow. Iratus called for tarps to cover them as the townspeople gathered to inspect both the machines and the newcomers.
Iratus paused to recount the villa’s horrors, with Resonantia stepping in:
Resonantia: "We were about to head out to reinforce you, but it looks like you managed on your own."
Arcus: "Sounds like I lucked out avoiding that place."
Conversations sprouted across the courtyard. Aestus and Resonantia spoke with Pulvis and Caedes.
Aestus: "Don’t worry about security—we’ve got two walls!"
Pulvis: "That’s not what I meant."
Caedes: "We’re just not sure we should stay."
Resonantia: "Aren’t the Cats of Providence known for sticking together? I’d think you’d be thrilled to team up with more of your kind."
Caedes: "I don’t trust the others—and I don’t see why we should."
Resonantia huffed in annoyance.
Nearby, Ignis and Ardens were deep in conversation—Ardens gradually opening up after an initially reserved start.
Fraus: "Don’t keep us in the dark—I’ve been dying to know what she’s thinking."
Ignis: "Now that someone can actually speak her language, she’ll be more than happy to stick around."
Off to the side, Victoria and Certamen exchanged glances.
Victoria: "You said your name was Certamen of the Lost Quickness?"
Certamen: "Is that a problem?"
Victoria: "Lost Quickness… I’ve had bad experiences with some of your kin. But that’s in the past—here in Nexus Prime, it doesn’t matter."
Certamen: "Well, hopefully you won’t have any trouble with me."
---
Chapter 927
Iratus scanned the courtyard and spotted another conversation—this one between Malignitas (visiting from Last Mistake) and Pusillanimitas.
Malignitas: "Well, well, well… look who’s still alive and kicking."
Pusillanimitas turned to face him, narrowing her eyes at his single eye.
Pusillanimitas: "Oh great—how are you still alive?"
Malignitas (mocking): "You are suppose to say, Oh great and sexy Malignitas, thank you for saving me, even though I arrived with a war party to kill your friends."
Pusillanimitas: "I owe you nothing. We settled that debt long ago."
Malignitas: "That doesn’t mean I can’t still be petty about the whole ordeal."
Pusillanimitas: "And this is exactly why I didn’t want to travel with you."
Malignitas: "You have to admit, it’s messed up that we meet again."
Pusillanimitas: "Yeah. What happened to the others who came with you?"
Malignitas: "Dead."
Pusillanimitas scratched her head.
Pusillanimitas: "So I guess only three of us remain. Wonder if we’ll find that weasel girl next?"
Malignitas: "I already found Procella Ocean-Drinker."
Pusillanimitas: "Oh? How did that go?"
Malignitas: "She kicked my face until I said sorry."
Pusillanimitas: "Shouldn’t she have apologized?"
Malignitas: "I don’t remember if she did, and frankly I don’t care—got more important enemies to fight."
Iratus’s gaze shifted to Levi and Astrid talking nearby.
Levi: "I didn't mean to offend you."
Astrid: "I'm not offended. I just don’t like being 'miladied.'"
Levi: "We’re in dangerous wilderness—we have to protect our women."
Astrid: "I’ve trained for combat and I’m armed. I can take care of myself, thank you."
Levi: "You shouldn’t have to. That’s all I meant—you don’t have to do this when someone like me is willing to help."
Astrid: "I'm fine, thank you—and thanks for the thought."
Iratus settled into the new kitchen building, where Bai Xue, Vesper, and Joe were seated. Echo and Sutura were cooking the meal this time.
Iratus: "You planning to wear that the whole time, Vesper?"
Vesper: "Of course. I’m not going to let you barbarians push me around!"
Sutura emerged with a platter of cooked meat and set it on the table.
Sutura: "This one’s on the house—for the new arrivals."
Iratus dropped two copper coins into her waiting hand.
---
Chapter 928
Vesper: "I don't recognize that currency."
Iratus: "Lionhearth mints its own coins. We have a thriving community—jobs, production, trade."
Sutura: "Oh, Vesper, right? Want me to fetch some honey from your homeworld for your meal?"
Vesper: "Wait—what?"
Iratus: "Wait—what?"
Vesper: "How would you even know what planet I’m from?"
Sutura: "Vesper is literally the most common name for mothfolk."
Iratus tilted his head.
Iratus: "Moths? First ants, now moths?"
Vesper: "I don't believe this."
Embarrassed, the mothfolk lowered her hood, revealing gray fur and short silver hair. When she removed her cloak entirely, delicate moth wings unfurled behind her.
Iratus: "So… why hide your true form?"
Vesper: "I haven't had good luck when people see me. Honestly, I'm not sure I should stay—now that everyone knows what I look like."
Iratus: "Uh, okay? I don’t think anyone here cares."
Vesper: "We shall see."
A short while later, Astrid approached Joe to speak in his language. Iratus lingered nearby to answer any questions, but Joe made it clear he wanted nothing to do with Lionhearth. Iratus offered him a backpack stocked with supplies and a weapon for his journey east, which he would begin the next day.
---
Chapter 929
On day 285, Iratus watched the newcomers interacting with the people of Lionhearth. Their exchanges were mostly positive, so he went about his day—hunting with his wives and playing tabletop games with friends. When talk turned to role‑playing games, Vesper was eager to join in.
Iratus: "I told you—if you like games, this is the place to be."
The mothfolk had her hood up again, but as she browsed the game shelf, she removed her cloak.
Vesper: "I do miss gaming. I guess I can stay here a while longer."
Days passed until day 298, by which time most of the newcomers had found their place. Ardens Ignifera spent much of her time helping Ignis with chores and caring for the babies.
Vesper even wrote an entire TTRPG book—Ever Dark RPG—cementing her status as a permanent member of Lionhearth.
Vesper: "I, Vesper Red Queen, shall be your Game Master today."
Iratus: "This game looks interesting. Playing half‑monsters or ancient titans is new to me."
Vesper: "Yeah—my planet’s monsters, not the real monsters out there."
Victoria: "To be fair, we were told they’re normal creatures, not monsters—but I don’t know how that explains the crazy things they can do."
Iratus: "The gray‑masked ones defy existence by not being real themselves. The pale hosts, even the ebony stalkers—they perform what I can only describe as magic. And somehow I’m told it’s not magic… it’s madness is what I say."
Certamen didn’t stay permanently, but he swore that if he ever had nowhere else to go, he would return.
Iratus: "Even though you wanted to band together for survival?"
Certamen: "I didn’t realize there were settlements everywhere. How many have you come across?"
Iratus: "Uh—three off the top of my head, five if you count nomadic ones… and honestly, I’m probably forgetting some."
Certamen: "Right. I just want a better view of the region."
Iratus: "If that’s what you want to do."
Pusillanimitas of House Redtide almost left as well. But seeing the children play and watching the mothers of Lionhearth dedicated to raising their babies, she decided to stay—and remarked how much the settlement felt like a normal village.
---
Chapter 930
Levi decided to move to the farm with the Umbra Ocean Family and the Cobalts—he seemed to prefer that kind of honest work. Iratus, however, knew Levi had been burned by Astrid.
Astrid: "Don’t blame me. I wasn’t negative about his flirtations, his offers of work and gifts… honestly, it made me feel good to know I’m truly beautiful. What I didn’t like was that those things weren’t love, and what I wanted in a relationship was something he was ideologically against. I don’t know why we can’t stay friends, but… okay."
Pulvis and Caedes considered moving in but ultimately decided on Last Mistake instead. Despite Iratus’s warning that they weren’t invited, he offered them a place to stay. They tried it but, never having forgiven him, returned to their cabin for now.
Bai Xue—the fluff dragonfolk—chose to remain in Lionhearth. She looked to Iratus as her leader, especially once she saw the evidence of his authority. Vesper, though from the same planet, didn’t know Bai Xue’s language, so teaching her the local tongue was slow going—but it had begun. All the newcomers were briefed on Purple City and the looming war, and each found their place in the village.
Ardens Ignifera was determined to stay with Ignis so she swore herself to the defense of Lionhearth, though perhaps not completely understanding the true extent of war. Certamen probably left because of this news while Pusillanimitas welcomed the future war though with everyone else, hoped it would never come. War didn't seem to bother Levi as his word saw it as just a normal practice, though the more modern times did have some rejection to it, he too would welcome war. Bai Xue was given pictures in hopes to make her understand and she responded with her own symbols to which Vesper reconized.
Vesper: "I don’t know the exact word, but it’s like an unlanded elite soldier—family. 'Unlanded' or 'masterless knight' might be the best translation. And this other picture is the bending of the knee—swearing loyalty."
Iratus: "She doesn't even know me, and I'm not sure I made a great first impression."
Vesper: "You have other soldiers here who all salute you. I think she understands you're the lord."
Iratus: "Which reminds me—will you stay, knowing we might go to war with Purple City?"
Vesper: "You don’t know how dangerous the wilderness is. If I have to fight a war to have a home, then I'll fight. Plus, I really want to keep playing games with all my new friends."
Iratus nodded, ready to continue his day—until Vesper spoke again.
Vesper: "Iratus, I've been thinking. I share the Bloodforge creation story and even have 'folk' in my species name—so why are mothfolk so much smaller than the rest of you? Seriously, you’re still growing and you dwarf most moth adults. This isn't fair!"
