Black Hole: The Book of Iratus, Episode 94

Chapter 931

Four days later (day 302), Confodere Oculi Acuti and Liora Woodleaf moved from Last Mistake to Lionhearth. That same day, Pulvis of Clan Sootdrinker and Caedes, Mother of Clan Sootdrinker, finally relocated into Last Mistake, taking their place. On day 322, Bellum gave birth to her first child, Ambitiosus of Winter Winds, and Studium took considerable time off to spend with his new family.

By day 332, the secondary wall was finally completed alongside the first one, each featuring rudimentary but functional gatehouses—primitive, yet all Lionhearth could manage.

On day 347, rumors began circulating about Certamen’s disappearance. Worried whispers reached Iratus’s ears, so he organized several search parties.

He gathered Confodere, Resonantia, and Salvos to investigate near the eastern cave.

Iratus: "We may need to widen our search later, but for now we’ll check the usual spots. Today, we explore the cave with the train wreck in it."

Confodere: "Alright—you're the boss."

Salvos: "More like the monarch."

Resonantia: "Don’t let Iratus hear you—that always makes him twitch."

Iratus: "Considering I’m standing right here…"

With preparations complete, the group set out for the cave. As they walked, Resonantia slipped her hand through Iratus’s arm.

Resonantia: "Finally—back on the hunt with you."

Iratus: "Yeah, but unless it’s an actual hunt for game, we’re probably going to find monsters or other weird things."

Resonantia: "As long as it’s with you, it’s worth it."

Iratus flicked his tail in affectionate amusement.

Salvos: "The cave entrance is just ahead, and I’m smelling fresh scents."

Iratus snapped to attention.

Iratus: "Then let’s move in stealthily."

---

Chapter 932

Up close to the open cave — which started as a mine — Iratus spotted yet another new camp set up at the entrance. He let out a heavy sigh.

Resonantia: "Ah, more strangers. How shall we handle them, my love?"

Iratus: "The usual way. Let’s see if we can get them to talk first."

He kept a sharp eye on the camp, but no one seemed to be around. He motioned for everyone to hold position, waiting to see if someone would show. After about two minutes, movement stirred from deeper inside the cave. A lone figure emerged, heading toward a nearby tent and rummaging through its contents.

Iratus stepped out of the brush, glancing back at Salvos, who gave the group’s bolt-action rifle a light tap. Iratus nodded in response, then turned and calmly approached the camp.

When he drew closer, the stranger noticed him — a rabbitfolk woman. Up close, Iratus could see her more clearly: an adult rabbitfolk with chestnut brown hair cut into a bob, gray fur speckled with white around her nose and underbelly, and sharp amber-gold eyes.

She carried an old-looking camera around her neck, a leather messenger bag with reinforced straps slung over her shoulder, a pocket knife and multi-tool at her belt, black fingerless gloves, and a clean black tube-top paired with blue-gray shorts. From the tent she’d been digging through, Iratus spotted a foldable electric scooter, a cassette player, and a yellow raincoat.

Rabbitfolk Girl: "Salut, not one more step — strangers are cause for alarm, yes?"

Or at least, that’s what Iratus thought she said. Her accent was so thick it was almost like trying to untangle string.

Iratus: "Right. I'll just stand here then, unless you start shooting at me. Strangers have a habit of doing that, don't they?"

Rabbitfolk Girl: "Ha, right you are! Can't tell you how many times I waved hello to someone, only to be shot at. Must've thought I was one of the ugly monsters roaming around."

Iratus cleared his throat.

Iratus: "Hello. My name is Iratus Lionheart. Nice to meet you."

Communiquer: "Communiquer Zircon Beaumont. Rabbit courier and freelance street photographer — if you're hiring."

Iratus: "Huh. That doesn’t exactly sound like a typical rabbitfolk name."

Communiquer: "Et maintenant? What name should I have then?"

Iratus: "The rabbitfolk I've met so far include Stridore Onyx Bladesworn, Commercium Jade Blue Cobalt, Clamor Amethyst Cold Iron the Second, and Tacitus Rustbane. Well — those are the ones with full names, anyway. I could name a few sharks too, since your kinds seem pretty similar, coming from the same planet."

Communiquer: "That's quite a lot of information for a first meeting! But yes, sharks and rabbits — no difference after a certain point in history. Although... one thing you said stands out. 'Jade Blue Cobalt'? No way that's a real family name. Sounds fake. Now, Clamor Amethyst Cold Iron the Second — like, the king?"

Iratus: "The very same. Unfortunately, he died not too long ago in battle."

Communiquer: "Malheureuse. I would've loved to speak with one of the old-timers and learn some real history."

Iratus: "So you see why your name caught me off guard."

Communiquer: "A single planet holds hundreds of nations over its history, mon ami. You can’t expect us all to have matching names."

Iratus: "I suppose that’s fair."

Just then, Communiquer's long ears twitched, alert.

Communiquer: "So, what are your friends up to? Laying an ambush?"

Iratus: "Didn’t want to spook you, that’s all."

He raised his hand and signaled the others to come out. One by one, his group emerged from the brush, walking calmly to his side and offering their introductions.

---

Chapter 933

Once Resonantia introduced herself, Communiquer’s eyes lit up with recognition.

Communiquer: "Eh? I know that name! You’re the Heart Steel lass who died to... uh..."

Resonantia: "Tacitus Rustbane, apparently, killed me."

Communiquer: "Didn't the mouse here mention that name? What — you actually met your killer here?"

Resonantia: "Yes."

Communiquer: "Classic Nexus Prime. I once stumbled across my hometown, but it was crawling with puppets — copies of my old friends and family. Worst day of my life."

Iratus: "Also, for the record, I'm a feline. I just happen to look like a mouse."

Communiquer: "That sounds a little too fantastical."

Iratus stepped closer, pointing to his eyes. Curious, the rabbit woman leaned in to inspect them.

Communiquer: "Woh!"

Without missing a beat, she raised her camera and snapped a picture of Iratus’s face.

Salvos: "Quick, Iratus — charge her for using your image!"

Communiquer: "Very funny." She lowered the camera. "Hm, you’re all wearing matching military uniforms. How'd that happen?"

Iratus: "I founded a settlement called Lionhearth not too far from here. If you and your friends" he gestured toward the other tents, "aren’t bandits or troublemakers, you’re welcome to join us."

Communiquer: "Goodness, no! My two amis and I are just travelers. Or perhaps refugees, if I'm honest. Our little conclave was wiped out by fiends from Purple City."

Iratus: "What irony. That same bunch has been causing us trouble too, even from way over here."

Salvos: "Well — just one patrol so far. The rest were more like Purple City fanboys."

Iratus: "And as of now, we've got some uneasy peace, but I doubt they’ll sit back once they realize how many resources we've gathered."

Communiquer: "Injuste! How far do we have to run to finally be free?"

Iratus: "If it's any comfort, while war might be on the horizon, I’m confident we'll win."

Salvos: "We just need more guns."

Resonantia: "Or get everyone trained in archery."

---

Chapter 934

The group followed the rabbit woman deeper into the cave. Glow sticks lined the path — faint green light barely cutting through the darkness — but it was enough for everyone, their night vision filling in the gaps.

Communiquer: "I still don't know about settling down again. Don't the gray masks stop that kind of thing from happening?"

Iratus: "We've beaten them back plenty of times — even killed their main body, well... several times. But I doubt they're truly gone."

Salvos: "We'd show you the mask, but the thing vanished. Poof — like it was never there."

The wolf gestured with his hands, making an exaggerated "disappearing" motion for emphasis.

Communiquer: "Main body? What do you mean by that?"

Iratus: "The creature's name is Kollektivi — Sin Lord of Dictatorship. Every monster type has a Sin Lord tied to them."

The rabbit tilted her head, ears twitching slightly.

Communiquer: "So you defeated a main villain, pour ainsi dire?"

Iratus: "That's one way to put it."

Communiquer: "Incroyable! Maybe your settlement is exactly what we need."

Resonantia: "Speaking of Sin Lords, the puppets sound familiar. Can you tell us more about your hometown run-in?"

Communiquer: "I can say this — I didn't see any lord of puppets. The things I ran into were stuffed with spiders. All I could do was run, hide, and fight when I had to, until help arrived. After that, Sagitta, Parabula, and I started traveling together."

Salvos: "Sagitta? Sounds like a wolf." He rubbed his chin.

Iratus: "And Parabula... that name screams goat."

Communiquer: "Yup, you nailed it. Those are my boys. I’ve been in Nexus Prime for about eight months now. Spent half that time alone, the rest traveling with them. We found a small settlement once, but had to flee when Purple City decided their promises weren't worth the paper they were written on."

Iratus: "What, did they have some kind of non-aggression pact?"

Communiquer: "Something like that. We had open trade — their people came by often for our wares. The settlement specialized in woodcraft, so we had plenty to offer."

Her voice softened, a shadow of old memories crossing her face, but she shook it off and lifted her head.

Communiquer: "But enough about that. We're almost at the others."

---

Chapter 935

Iratus spotted them first.

The wolffolk was an older man, steel-gray hair matched by dark charcoal fur streaked with silver around the muzzle and tail tip. His sharp blue eyes studied them, and he wore a weathered leather bomber jacket, patched up with old military unit insignias, and a well-worn toolkit strapped to his belt.

The second was a goatfolk, his black hair slightly unkempt, fur sandy beige with dark brown patches across his limbs. His green eyes glinted with quiet curiosity. He wore a beat-up denim jacket, covered in enamel pins from random bars and coffee shops scattered across Nexus Prime, and around his neck hung a pair of scuffed noise-canceling headphones.

Sagitta: "Communiquer, how many times do we have to warn you about talking to strangers?"

Communiquer: "Non, non — these ones are friendly."

Once introductions were made, Iratus and his group explained the situation, telling the two newcomers about Lionhearth, its growth, and the opportunities waiting for anyone seeking safety and community.

Sagitta: "Sagitta Cloud Wake. Former military mechanic turned auto shop owner... until I drove through a demilitarized zone and, well — a tunnel spat me out here."

Parabula: "Parabula of Arcanum Vitae. Indie musician, sound designer, part-time barista. Not even this wonky world can stop me from dropping beats."

Iratus: "A pleasure to meet you both."

The older wolffolk crossed his arms and gave them a steady look.

Sagitta: "So, you came all the way out here to what — advertise your settlement?"

Iratus: "That’s one way to put it. Lionhearth's grown enough that we need a larger population to keep pace with the wealth and demand."

Parabula: "So it's a thriving village?"

Iratus: "It is. Babies are born every year, we raise cattle, and grow our own crops. We’ve even got some electricity, and we're working on expanding that."

Resonantia: "Everyone is well-trained and part of the defensive militia, too."

Salvos, looking at Sagitta, tilted his head slightly.

Salvos: "You said you were a mechanic? We’ve got a Humvee — technically two — that could use a professional eye."

Sagitta: "I've heard about those. Are they even close to running, or just scrap with wheels?"

A little ways off, Resonantia had struck up a side conversation with the goat man.

Resonantia: "You’re a musician? You might like our two singers back at Lionhearth."

Parabula: "Singers? Wait, you've got a groovy little band going?"

Resonantia: "They perform often — you'd fit right in."

Parabula: "Oh man, I have to check this place out."

---

Chapter 936

Looking ahead, Iratus spotted the familiar spider tunnel, though it looked different now. Several glowsticks marked the path, casting their soft light along the walls — revealing that the webbing and the spiders were completely gone.

Iratus: "What happened to the spider tunnel?"

Communiquer: "Hm? Spiders and webs? When we came through, this tunnel was bare. No sign of them. There's a crazy underground bastion at the end, though — we’ve been trying to find a way inside. You know, for the loot."

Resonantia: "I wonder if it was always there, or if Nexus Prime shuffled its parts around again."

Iratus: "Mind if we take a look?"

Sagitta: "Sure, but since we were here first, we get first pick when it comes to loot."

Iratus: "That's fair."

The whole group began making their way deeper into the tunnel. Iratus’s people looked visibly excited. Iratus, though, kept his senses sharp, scanning the tunnel walls and floor for any trace of where the spiders or their webbing might have gone. But there was nothing. No stray web strands. No drag marks. Just emptiness.

The tunnel gradually sloped downward, forcing the group to climb more than walk. A few members flicked on their flashlights as the glowstick light faded. Up ahead, another tunnel branch revealed a smooth, almost polished stone walkway. Following it, the group emerged into a small cavern — large enough to hold what looked like a fort nestled down below.

Iratus moved to the edge, but the cliffside was sheer and dangerous — no way down without rope. His eyes followed the terrain to the fort, noting the colorful veins of stone crisscrossing the ground, all converging on the structure itself. The stone walls of the fort were marked too, the veins trailing up and over them like natural decorations.

Resonantia: "Looks more like a gate than a stronghold, the way it's wedged into the rock face."

Iratus: "Do you have a way to get down there?"

Sagitta: "Not yet. We've been scrounging for supplies. Just need a few more things, and then we'll be ready to search."

Salvos looked off toward another tunnel that branched away from the ledge.

Salvos: "The path there — where does it lead?"

Parabula: "Another cave opening, but it's perched on a ledge too. We'd need a ladder or some rope to reach it."

---

Chapter 937

The group made their way back to the tents set up near the mine entrance of the cave. As they settled in, Iratus took a moment to explain the other paths branching off from the tunnel.

Iratus: "One of them leads to a pit — it was made for a train to fall into. I actually rode it all the way down."

Parabula: "Groovy, man."

Communiquer blinking: "You survived falling into a pit on a train?"

Iratus: "Hasn't everyone?"

The group chuckled at the offhanded remark, and Iratus moved on to the next part.

Iratus: "The other tunnel leads to an underground elevator room that connects to an old railroad tunnel."

Resonantia: "And that tunnel eventually leads to a tower built by the summoners."

Communiquer: "Oh! Those are the ones who dragged us into Nexus Prime in the first place!"

Salvos: "How much do you three actually know about Nexus Prime?"

Sagitta: "It’s a giant space station, packed with entire planets flying around inside it."

Iratus’s eyes widened in surprise.

Iratus: "Seriously? We had to piece that together the hard way."

Parabula: "What about the other direction in the train tunnel? Where does that lead?"

Iratus: "No clue. It gets too cold down there, and we’re not exactly equipped for a trip like that — not yet, anyway."

Parabula: "Heh, sounds like a challenge to me."

As the conversation wound down, the cave began to dim with the approaching dusk.

Iratus: "Huh. Looks like we stayed out a little too long. Anyway, if any of you ever want to check out Lionhearth, you’re more than welcome."

Communiquer: "Maybe we'll swing by tomorrow. We could use some rope and supplies anyway."

Iratus: "Perfect."

Iratus would make sure to ask about Certamen of the Lost Quickness to which this other group had not seen the raccoonfolk. After that everyone gave their their goodbyes and Iratus's group headed back to their own corner of the Nexus, for now.

---

Chapter 938

Victoria and Ignis weren’t exactly pleased by how late Iratus had returned.

Ignis: "You could’ve at least sent someone back to report your findings, my love."

Victoria: "We were supposed to have some family bonding time — and instead, you spent the whole day running around with Resonantia, my love."

Iratus raised his hands in defense.

Iratus: "We were working the whole time, I swear."

Somewhere else in the tower, Aestus was likely keeping watch over the babies.

Iratus: "Alright, let’s go over what everyone else found today."

They all gathered around the table, settling in as Victoria began.

Victoria: "Echo, Praevalidum, and Studium reported a quiet day. Their sweep past the ashen Japanese city turned up nothing unusual. Fraus and Arcus went back to one of their old hideouts with Pusillanimitas — and ran into three humans, two of them wearing prisoner uniforms."

Ignis slid a plate of baked cookies toward Iratus, who happily picked one up and took a bite as Victoria continued.

Victoria: "They said the group included a large, mentally unwell human, a crafty one, and a third — apparently some ex-prissy girl, now wearing a combat vest and packing enough guns to outfit a squad."

Iratus: "Do they know they can just grab new clothes? What even counts as prison uniforms out here anyway?"

The raccoon girl smiled.

Victoria: "I'm just passing along what they told me. I'm sure they mentioned the dozens of abandoned towns nearby if the newcomers needed gear."

Iratus: "Also — these cookies are fantastic."

Ignis beamed with pride at the compliment.

Ignis: "On the battlefield of kitchen duties, you can always count on me to conquer the art of making desirable sweets."

Iratus nodded, turning back to Victoria, who took the cue to continue.

Victoria: "Aside from that, no conflict. Looks like we’ve just got a few more neighbors wandering into the area. Eventually, you should go meet them — show them the face of our leadership, welcome them to the neighborhood, all that good stuff."

She cleared her throat before moving on.

Victoria: "Oh, and Resolutio, Otiosus, and Bai Xue had a rough time down at the beach — they ran into a pack of ashborn monsters."

Iratus frounded.

Iratus: "Fantastic. Just what we need — another monster infestation."

---

Chapter 939

The next day, as promised, Communiquer, Sagitta, and Parabula arrived — though they looked a little worse for wear.

Iratus was heading toward the gate when he caught part of the conversation already underway.

Salvos: "You three look terrible. What happened?"

Sagitta: "Ash and fire creatures hit us during the night. We're all a bit tired and scorched, but nothing too serious."

Iratus closed the remaining distance to join them.

Iratus: "One of my patrols spotted some along the beach yesterday."

Salvos: "For future reference, they're called Ashborn."

A few curious villagers gathered at the gate, eyeing the newcomers as Iratus turned the conversation back to business.

Iratus: "Well, now that you're here, we can talk about getting rope and whatever else you’ll need to explore that underground bastion."

The rabbit woman looked uneasy.

Communiquer: "Non sum tam certus... I mean, I’m not so sure about that anymore. Those things came from inside the cave. We packed up all our camping gear — it's not safe to sleep there now."

Victoria appeared at Iratus's side, ears perked, tail flicking slightly.

Victoria: "And we still don't know if more are creeping in from the beach."

Iratus nodded his head.

Iratus: "I see. I'll need to issue some orders."

He invited the three inside to look around while he went off to assemble combat teams.

As they stepped past the gate, Communiquer glanced around, wide-eyed.

Communiquer: "So this is Lionhearth."

Parabula: "Did your gang build all this?"

Victoria’s tail twitched slightly at the word gang, though her expression stayed calm and measured.

Victoria: "Aside from the stone tower — yes. The rest is all our work."

Parabula: "Groovy."

Sagitta looking around with genuine surprise: "It’s a real village. And with so many people too."

Salvos: "And that's just who you see. We've got neighbors beyond the walls, too. So technically, there’s even more of us."

---

Chapter 940

Iratus found Bai Xue and Otiosus wrapped in each other's arms when he finally tracked them down.

Iratus: "Hey, I need all combat-ready folks gathered."

Otiosus: "We’ll be there."

Iratus paused, raising an eyebrow.

Iratus: "Uh... are you two dating now? She still can't speak much of our language."

The gray mouse smiled slightly.

Otiosus: "She knows all the important words."

Iratus with a chuckle: "Well, glad you two found love."

With that, he moved on, gathering everyone he could until a sizable crowd had formed around the communal kitchen building.

Resonantia: "Wow, this is so much better than cramming into our kitchen for meetings."

Iratus gave her a small smile, then scanned the crowd before starting to issue orders.

Iratus: "Otiosus — I want you to form three squads and scour the beach for any signs of ashborn."

Otiosus gave a nod, and Iratus moved on to the next person.

Iratus: "Echo, head down to Last Mistake and find Malignitas. I'll hire him for backup. Once you've got him, meet up with Resolutio — she’ll be forming her own team to start fortifying the cave entrance."

Everyone gave their acknowledgments and split off to handle their assignments.

Turning back to his wives, Iratus offered them a softer proposal.

Iratus: "I'm going to see if the farmers can spare any extra hands for support. Want to come with me? I'd rather not go alone."

Three of the girls were happy to accept, but Aestus shook her head.

Aestus: "Tempestas and Nebula still need me. Plus, the other little ones are starting to walk. At this point, they'll need constant watching."

Iratus nodded, understanding, before turning to their guests.

Iratus: "And you three? Planning to lend a hand or sticking around here for a while?"

Communiquer: "I'll be doing both!"
