Black Hole: The Book of Iratus, Episode 91

Chapter 901

A few people whispered the name "Lionhearth." Once everyone turned their attention back to Iratus, he continued.

Iratus: "For two years—almost three now—I have made this tower my home. With so many people coming to live here too, calling it 'my tower' does no one any justice. I want to thank everyone here, Last Mistake, and the farmhouse for helping transform this tower into a real castle."

He paused for a moment, looking out at the gathered crowd.

Iratus: "Now is the time to change how we do things. Purple City is a threat, and we must be prepared at all times to resist an invasion. We will be increasing our martial practices and patrols around our region, and perhaps even sending expeditions to the border."

Arcus: "Excuse me, but aren't we already doing most of that?" She waved her fox tail back and forth in curiosity.

Iratus: "Yes, but we need to form a more formal military—or perhaps a militia—since everyone is already a part of it."

His mouse tail twitched stiffly as he spoke.

Then the hyena girl in the back chimed in.

Sutura: "As long as we get paid, right?"

Iratus: "Certainly. Also, we will be militarizing further by setting up watchtowers and keeping a lookout for new recruits, whether they join us or are hired."

There was a brief silence before he continued.

Iratus: "Uh, I don't really know how to wrap up speeches, so… that’s all."

A few claps started, which quickly grew into a louder, more enthusiastic round of applause. Iratus smiled and waved goodbye at everyone before heading back inside his tower with Victoria and Ignis. Taking a deep breath, he was soon met by the girls.

Victoria: "How are you feeling?"

Iratus: "I'm certainly not much of a talker."

Ignis: "You just need some practice."

Iratus shrugged.

Iratus: "Well, I just hope people understood what I meant to say."

Chapter 902

The next day, Iratus was out on patrol with Fraus, Arcus, and Studium, carrying a brand new longsword for a bit of barter. Despite the military expedition, everyone was dressed in casual beach clothes as they made their way toward the shore.

Iratus wiped the sweat from his brow under the tropical heat and looked around. The patrol had stumbled upon a trail Iratus didn’t remember. He tried to recall the mental map of the road south—among the hidden places and abandoned towns scattered among the trees, there shouldn’t be anything this close to the beach.

Fraus flicked her feline tail and sighed.

Fraus: "Was this trail always here, or did it appear during one of the Blackest Days?"

Iratus: "I think it's more that we always find new things. No matter how many times we search, we miss something—especially to the south."

Arcus: "Speaking of the south..." Arcus finished downing a canteen and hung it with two other empty ones on her belt.

Arcus: "We’re getting paid extra, right?"

Iratus: "I'm still working that out. Without an actual economy or a reliable way to generate money, everything’s on hold for now."

Arcus sighed at the news.

Arcus: "I could be doing so many other things."

Fraus: "Arcus, please be nicer to our boss."

Arcus: "Landlord? Boss? Either way, you're right. I'm just melting in this awful heat."

Studium remained mostly silent, only chiming in when something of interest was mentioned. An hour later, the group came upon a cabin nestled in the jungle and woodland wilderness. They slowed down, hunkering in the brush as they sniffed the air and strained their ears.

Iratus: "Anybody get anything?"

Arcus: "Hm, maybe you should get that little mouse nose checked."

Studium spoke up, his tone thoughtful.

Studium: "It's a bit old, but I do smell people—several different species that I recognize."

Iratus: "Perfect. Let’s circle around to the front and hope we don’t look like bandits."

Arcus: "Smells like otter and mouse... Hey, if Nexus Prime sucks in people and places from all over space and time, shouldn’t we eventually find one of the original mousefolk rather than, you know, mouse-cat people like you?"

Iratus: "Didn't we go over this before?"

Arcus shrugged in response.

Iratus: "People species go through three stages of development: before spiritual hardening, common life, and then the space age."

The four continued walking toward the front of the cabin, still a good distance away yet moving steadily while bantering along the way.

---

Chapter 903

Iratus: "To keep it short, only people in the middle stage of development can be brought here by Nexus Prime. So, no super ancient folks—and no one with regular space travel can just pop up here."

Fraus: "Unless, of course, they fly in here like your previous friends."

Iratus: "Right."

The group paused on the road leading up to the cabin and took another look at it.

Studium: "It's still hard to sniff things out, so maybe we should give it a knock?"

Iratus scanned the cabin's windows with his golden eyes.

Iratus: "I just don't like the idea if they have firearms. We would be dead. Hm, how about Fraus and Arcus go first?"

Arcus: "What? Come on, no way."

Fraus rubbed her chin thoughtfully and then nodded.

Fraus: "Trying to look as harmless as possible? I like it. Let's go, Arcus."

Arcus: "I don't believe this. Whatever, sure."

The two girls walked up to the cabin and knocked on the door. After about a minute, they began looking around the front of the cabin before returning to Iratus and Studium.

Fraus: "They're not home."

Studium: "Maybe we could track them down or come back later?"

Iratus: "My thoughts exactly. Let's take a look around."

---

Chapter 904

The group followed the road and drew closer to the southern shore; the salty scent in the air grew heavier with each step. The road twisted and eventually split in multiple directions. One branch ended in a dirt path that led to a small town. Iratus’s keen eyes caught sight of a distinctive white building among the shanties.

Iratus: "Wait, I remember a report about that location. How did the guys not see this road?"

Fraus: "This road is partly hidden by all the trees. I've made a similar mistake before."

The other branch of the road continued uphill, ending at a gravel path. Up close, Iratus could see a clear division: one side still a dense jungle, the other a well-maintained woodland trail.

Iratus: "Speaking of places—those that Nexus Prime brings in."

Arcus: "Yeah, but if you look around, you'll notice some cross-pollination. This area has been here for a long time."

Studium: "I can also smell urine. I'm pretty sure the people we’re looking for were here not too long ago."

Fraus: "Then up we go."

Rounding the hill, the group stopped in front of a gated villa—a particularly large complex set right on the shore, overlooking a bay. The villa complex sat at the edge of a lush woodland where towering trees and thick undergrowth blended seamlessly with meticulously landscaped grounds. A wrought-iron gate led into a series of interconnected villas, each built with natural materials echoing the surrounding forest. The main structure—a stately villa of stone and timber—overlooked a tranquil bay. Rather than a sandy beach, the property abutted the water directly, its exterior gently caressed by rolling waves.

Attached to the villa were several small docks that extended into the bay, though Iratus couldn’t see any water vehicles around. The bay itself was partially enclosed by a low, curving stone wall that formed a quiet cove.

Arcus: "Oh sure, a nice building has been out here the whole time."

Fraus: "If it's been years, there must be plenty of disrepair around this place."

Iratus: "Despite how far it is from home, could one of you go gather the others and hurry over here?"

Arcus: "By salvation, I volunteer. Weird encounters seem to follow you, Iratus—no doubt whacky monsters await in that villa."

Studium: "But no one will be coming for hours, though."

Iratus: "The shanty town behind has a road that cuts the travel time by a fifth. It’ll probably be near night when reinforcements arrive, but if we have to hunker down and wait, I don't see why we couldn't."

Fraus: "Not to mention, this is another great place to loot. We can start gathering electronic devices now that we have some semblance of power generation back at the tower."

Arcus was chosen to head back and gather the others, while the remaining three cautiously walked down to the gates—which had been ruthlessly smashed in by recent intruders.

---

Chapter 905

Iratus examined the area and noted that outside the gates, the grounds were clearly neglected—nature had swallowed up any sense of a manicured yard. Yet inside the gated area, everything looked strangely well maintained. There were a few leaves and even a few fallen branches, but otherwise it was if time had not taken its toll.

Iratus: "I think Arcus might have been right. This place doesn't seem normal."

Fraus: "And we're without our armor. I hope our spears will be enough."

Studium: "Why didn't we take any ranged weapons?"

Iratus: "Because I'm terrible, apparently." He chuckled, and the others managed their own quiet "ha" in response.

The three crept inside the gated area, surveying their surroundings. Iratus began by opening several metal crates, only to find them empty. Then he joined Studium in opening a shed tucked away from view. Inside, empty shelves stood silently, the very thick layer of dust marking the building's age.

Soon, they joined up with Fraus, who was following a narrow path that led into a hole in the hill. Suddenly, she ducked behind cover. Alarmed, Iratus and Studium rushed over, arriving just in time to see four figures emerge in a manic frenzy. These foes were dressed in blue uniforms with a black stripe running down the center, their outfits completely covering them. Each wore a helmet with a durable plastic visor that concealed their faces.

The assailants charged—one turned on Iratus while the others pursued Fraus. The attacker lunged at Iratus with flailing, uncoordinated movements. Each of these combatants wielded large knives, nearly resembling short swords. Iratus barely dodged a well-aimed strike from the creature that rushed him. Without pausing to help Fraus immediately, he grabbed the attacker, tossed it to the ground, and then hurried to aid his friend, who was leaping over a cluster of metal boxes that the chasers struggled to navigate.

Another one of these figures charged at Iratus. Using the superior reach of his longsword, he intercepted the foe—breaking its arm before delivering a swift draw cut. To his surprise, the blade severed not with splattering blood, but with a burst of thick, dark fabric.

Meanwhile, as Studium dispatched the attacker that had charged Iratus earlier, he hurled his spear, striking another of these fabric-clad monsters. This distraction gave Fraus the opportunity to impale the final assailant and drag it to the ground, where she delivered several more stabs.

After the battle, the three exchanged looks.

Studium: "God bless—Arcus was right. You always seem to run into monsters."

Iratus merely shrugged.

Iratus: "What can I say?"

---

Chapter 906

Suddenly, the decapitated creature convulsed violently. Before anyone could react, a large spider burst forth from its chest and lunged at Studium. The terrified fox screamed as a torso-sized spider latched onto his leg. Gripping his spear tightly, Studium struggled to keep the creature at bay. Fraus rushed to his side and thrust her spear into the spider, killing it instantly.

After a long, heavy pause to process what they had just witnessed, the group began systematically examining the remaining bodies—ensuring each torso was neutralized. When they were finished, Iratus noticed splatters of blue blood on their weapons.

Fraus: "Okay, what kind of monsters are these?"

Iratus: "Assuming they aren't normal animals… well, I have an idea, but I'll need more evidence first."

The group then peered down a nearby path and discovered a helicopter pad with a helicopter parked on it. As they drew closer, they saw the aircraft in complete disrepair—as if it had been burned and gutted, leaving only a hollow husk behind.

Iratus: "This thing is a helicopter, right?"

Fraus: "Well, it's the remains of one."

Iratus: "And it can fly? It doesn't look like it."

Fraus: "Technology is weird like that."

Studium: "I don't see anything useful here. Shall we head inside the villa?"

Iratus nodded.

Iratus: "Right, let's get this over with."

The group passed through a courtyard lined with gardens, where small fountains and a few benches, along with a nearby gazebo, added to the décor. The villa itself was mostly two stories tall, with the central section boasting an extra story on top. Robust stone walls and timber accents gave the building an air of timeless strength.

Inside, spacious rooms were arranged around a central hall. In the dining room, the group discovered numerous mannequins—broken and cracked open. As they investigated further, they found goop and other unsavory substances inside the shattered figures.

Iratus: "I don't know what the silver hell this stuff is, but these mannequins must surely come from Buba."

Fraus: "Not all mannequins are evil. Literally, they're used in clothing stores. Someone might have just dumped them here."

Iratus: "Oh sure, we could place the odds on that instead of monsters."

Fraus fell silent for a few seconds before answering.

Fraus: "Considering our luck, it’s probably something closer to your theory than mine."

At that moment, Studium's ears twitched.

Studium: "Hey, I hear something going on. Come on."

---

Chapter 907

Outside, the three ran down a twisting path toward another building. This structure was smaller but boasted a modern layout inside—a desk, laptop, couch, small library, and several other rooms. Though the area was somewhat cramped, it somehow felt spacious at the same time. As Iratus looked around, he also heard a commotion down a hall. Peering in that direction, he spotted another spider—black, grotesque, and similar in size to the previous ones.

Iratus: "Spears, go!"

Fraus and Studium dashed down the hallway with their spears drawn, with Iratus close behind in case the spider dodged their attacks. The two managed to impale the spider, though it continued to twitch. That forced Iratus to step in with his sword and deliver a final stab, ensuring the creature was dead as the others held it down.

After confirming its death, they carried the still-impaled spider into a small room. Iratus knocked on the door, and after a moment, a voice responded from the other side—in a language he did not understand.

Iratus: "Uh, excuse me, any chance you speak the universal language?"

Studium: "Universal, so arrogant."

Iratus: "It's not like we have another way to name things when everyone in Nexus Prime calls it something different."

A foreign, clearly feminine voice spoke again. Iratus could even hear a few sniffles—as if the girl inside had been crying moments earlier.

After a few seconds, Iratus sighed in annoyance.

Iratus: "I don't have the patience for this. Let's go."

Studium looked inquisitive, but after seeing Fraus follow Iratus without hesitation, the fox boy shrugged and joined in. The three hadn't taken more than a few steps when the door opened and someone stepped out.

She was a redpandafolk with deep rust-red fur accented by streaks of vibrant orange and gold. Her eyes burned orange like fire, and now in the open, she carried herself far better than the timid tone from behind the door had suggested. Dressed in fitted leather armor stitched with thick cloth and wearing a crimson cloak edged in gold thread, she appeared determined.

Seeing that she was unarmed, Fraus pulled out a short sword and handed it to her. Gently accepting the blade, the red panda woman pointed to herself and said, "Ardens Ignifera."

Studium: "Is that her name?"

Iratus then pointed to himself. "Iratus." Next, he pointed to the fox boy: "Studium." Then to the feline: "Fraus."

Ardens: "Iratus, Studium, Fraus." She nodded, and the three returned the gesture.

Iratus: "Now, let's get out of here."

---

Chapter 908

Fraus grabbed the laptop but then looked at it in confusion.

Fraus: "It's not real."

She dropped it, and it made a soft, silent bounce on the ground.

Iratus: "Okay, what does that mean?"

Fraus: "That wasn't a laptop. It was just fabric."

Iratus: "I guess that's weird."

Studium tried to grab some books off the shelf, only to find that he couldn't.

Studium: "Sir, it's the same with these books—they're just fabric woven to look like books on a shelf."

Iratus: "Pretty good deceptions, then."

Studium: "Well, I guess that's true, since you and Fraus have the best eyes here."

Ardens mumbled something, but her words sounded like ramblings—no one could understand her. After a moment, the group left the building and headed back toward the main villa entrance, but they stopped when the gate came into view.

The gate was completely overwhelmed by thick strands of spider webs. Several giant spiders—and many smaller ones—were busy weaving webs all over the gate and even on the fence.

Iratus: "Aw, silver hell!"

Fraus: "Looks like we've been caught in their trap."

Iratus glanced at Ardens and pointed at the gate. She nodded, so he tried to communicate with his hands.

Iratus: "That wasn't here when we came through."

The red panda woman nodded again and pointed to her eyes, then to the gate, and finally mimed a falling motion—indicating that webs had come down since their last visit.

Fraus: "Looks like it's time to head back inside and look for a boss battle."

Iratus: "Or, we could find a way to fight those spiders without getting jumped by many of them."

He scanned the surroundings, and the others followed his gaze. Soon, all eyes returned to the villa as figures passed by some of the windows.

Iratus: "What is going on in this place?"

---

Chapter 909

Inside the area where they had just been, thick webs now draped the space, and many large spiders were still busy with their constructions.

Fraus: "I don't get paid enough for this."

Iratus: "I'll start clearing a path. You two need to pick off those spiders."

As Fraus and Studium attacked, every strike seemed to attract not one or two, but five or six spiders, forcing Iratus and Ardens to interrupt their work to help. In one skirmish, Fraus was bitten, and the wound quickly began showing signs of necrosis.

Fraus: "Oh, come on! How much longer?"

Iratus: "I've barely started, but we can enter through the door to the west here."

Studium: "We'll be trapped if we go any further inside."

Before they could regroup, a few more spiders began climbing nearby, and even some of the fallen ones started twitching back to life.

Iratus: "We'll make it out—let's go."

The group moved further into the villa and slammed the door behind them. They then spread out to scout the area.

Fraus: "Everything looks clear over here."

Studium: "I found some stairs. Hello? Anyone up there?"

Iratus hurried over but was intercepted by Ardens, who pointed toward an open door at the back. Glancing around, Iratus realized Fraus was missing. He ran toward the open door and discovered a short hallway leading to another room where Fraus was. She had taken refuge in an entertainment room where a television played some kind of show.

Iratus raised his sword, about to use the crossguard to break the glass—until he paused, rubbing his hand along its surface. To his surprise, the glass, and even the door, was made of fabric cleverly overlaid to mimic real material, unlike the other solid doors.

---

Chapter 910

The TV was on, playing an animated music video featuring a group of musicians doing their thing. The lead was a mouse girl dressed in attire reminiscent of what Fraus and Arcus wore when they first met.

~Take your first step outside and sing it loud—your dream has finally come true and is here now!

The song continued, but Iratus’s mouse ears twitched when he heard a door open in the room.

Iratus: "Fraus, something is in there."

The feline snapped out of her bewilderment and began scanning the area. From the animated show, another mouse girl contributed her part of the song, and Iratus realized that he recognized Fraus’s voice in the recording. Though he wasn’t an expert on modern technology, he knew about voice actors—and wondered if that truly was her voice.

~By noon that day, you passed me by,
and from the glare of the sun,
you looked divine!
I was smitten!

At that moment, a door creaked open, and another felinefolk emerged. Dressed in business attire and clutching a briefcase, the man’s tone was warm—as if greeting a long-lost friend.

Feline Man: "Fraus, where have you been?"

Fraus initially appeared taken aback, but after a quick sniff to confirm the man’s scent, anger flared.

Fraus: "The Nexus Prime is full of deceitful monsters. You could at least smell like my brother!"

Feline Man: "For the love of silver, Fraus—look where we are. I can’t always smell 'normal' when I’m sampling all kinds of alien food."

Iratus: "From now on, I'm bringing a crowbar on every expedition." He was busy trying to pry open the door with one of his knives. "If you think that isn’t your—whatever—then stab them. If they’re real, they'll survive."

Feline Man: "Excuse me, what?"

Before Iratus could continue, Fraus drew her other short sword.

Feline Man: "Wait, wait, wait. Stop this, Fraus."
