Black Hole: The Book of Iratus, Episode 90

Chapter 891

The events that transpired at the Weather Tower — notably, that everyone was injured yet somehow no one died — were widely discussed among the settlement, the armored horseman, and the ebony. The fox boy, Studium, looked away and mumbled that he should have joined the scouting party, while Iratus’s wives hovered over him, doting over his wounds.

Ignis examined Echo’s wounds and remarked that Echo didn’t need to go all the way to the abandoned hospital.

Ignis: "That place isn’t as useful as you’d think. We have enough tools here to stitch him up."

After that, Iratus retired to his tower to recover from his injuries. He sat down as the girls quickly set to work — removing his armor, applying quick patchwork, and preparing a well-made meal with remarkable speed.

Victoria: "I'm really starting to get worried about all of these fights."

Iratus: "Now?"

Victoria: "I mean, you had to fight actual people—soldiers, in a way—with horses and training."

Aestus: "And that monster—you said it spoke."

Resonantia: "Just another Sin Lord who seeks our death."

Iratus: "It sounded as if it was possessing the person beneath him. I still don’t know what to think about those creatures."

Dolor and Diffido, the two new children that Iratus's party rescued at the Weather Tower, entered as Bellum and Studium guided them into the kitchen. The cheetah girl let out an exhausted sigh, one hand resting on her pregnant belly and the other holding her husband's.

Bellum jokingly: "You went out to get new children and just dumped them on us?"

Iratus: "I just wanted to sit down."

Stuidum: "Well, we should figure out what to do with these two."

Resonantia: "We may need a public barracks to house them."

Dolor: "We can build our own houses!"

Diffido: "That is unlikely."

Iratus sighed; although his injured leg and the bandages around his wounds and face itched, he smiled as the comforts of home began to heal him.

Chapter 892

Iratus took the next four days off, relaxing and spending as much time with his wives as he could. In the afternoon, he gazed out of one of the small windows to watch the settlement come to life.

He saw Victoria tending to the garden, which had been restored after the artificial blizzard caused by the Weather Tower. Resonantia had truly begun to recover from giving birth to another baby and was starting to take on some of the manual work. Meanwhile, Leitmotif was watching over Iratus's children, letting her own baby play with them. Iratus now noticed a hint of wolf in both her and Salvos's baby.

The other half of Iratus's group arrived. Their stay at the enemy camp was always temporary, as they only needed time to heal their wounds. While others caught up with them in conversation, Iratus focused his attention on Echo. The older sharkman was awake and using crutches—taken from the abandoned hospital—to aid his mobility, although he spent most of his time in recovery.

Arcus: "Don't look so glum; others said you played an important part in fighting the enemy."

The fox handed the man a ready-to-cook meal, scavenged long ago from one of the group's supply runs.

Echo: "The whole fight should never have happened. I just wished I could have done or said something to get us out of that mess."

Malignitas, from Last Mistake, was also around and decided to butt in on their conversation.

Malignitas: "No, he's really just upset because he got run through like some background character."

Arcus: "My God, he's an asshole."

Echo: "No, he's just upset because I was lucky enough to be taken down by an enemy, while he was simply run over by a horse—like some background character."

They both laughed, and even Malignitas chuckled. Finally, Iratus turned back to the kitchen to see Ignis and Aestus pulling out another board game to play.

Ignis: "The problem is that you should have given birth to your babies earlier. Our bodies are still not fully developed, and childbirth becomes more dangerous the longer the pregnancy continues."

Aestus: "Hmph, I've already given birth once before and it was no big deal, and so will this one."

Iratus: "That was probably because of all the painkillers we had in you, love."

As the conversation continued, Iratus excused himself to go downstairs and see if the newly arrived group had any new information.

Chapter 893

Commercium had already gone home, while Confodere returned to Last Mistake. Salvos, Deficio, and Fraus were chosen to brief Iratus and the rest of the settlement on what had happened at the enemy camp.

After several days, the group was well enough to travel and set the prisoners free.

Deficio: "Every good deed we can do for our enemies will eventually wear away their hostility towards us."

After hearing that, Malignitas crossed his arms and glared at the priest with his one eye.

Malignitas: "Are you out of the loop, priest? Purple City isn't interested in peace. Once they learn about our mountain of copper, rice fields, and other resources, they will wage war."

Victoria: "Sorry, Deficio, but I have to agree with Malignitas. I know you lived in a time when people had a high enough standard of living to be repulsed by war, but in my era—with so few resources—leaders always place wealth above God."

Deficio: "I'm just saying that with each act of kindness, people's hearts tend to change for the better."

Iratus coughed.

Iratus: "We're getting off topic." He turned back to the others. "Anything else happen?"

Fraus: "Nope. We just sat around most of the time. I took another look at that weather station, and it's a mess. I'm positive we killed all the edax that were infesting it, but they left the tower in a decayed state."

Iratus: "Then we can rest easy. Thanks again for your help."

Salvos: "Everyone is always at your command."

Iratus nodded, and everyone went off to continue living their lives within the settlement.

---

Chapter 894

It would only be two more days before Aestus gave birth to her two babies, Tempestas and Nebula. Tempestas—the older of the two—was conceived with a woman named Tempestas who had been with the group before Iratus used harvested reality to send her home.

Thirteen days later, on day 280, the settlement had built both a public kitchen and a guest house.

Dolor non-seriously: "I was promised my own home."

Diffido: "Well, I am happy with our temporary home."

Dolor: "So, will we get our own homes then?"

Iratus sighed.

Iratus: "Everyone is a bit busy these days. If more people start coming into our settlement, then you can stay in my tower for a while."

Diffido: "Perhaps we could start building our own homes?"

Iratus: "You have all the tools you need."

Dolor: "But how do we even build buildings?"

Diffido: "With tools, Dolor."

Iratus: "Alright, I'll leave you kids alone. I have to pick up Aestus's chores."

Diffido: "Which reminds me, why are there so many babies here?"

Iratus: "Just because there are monsters everywhere doesn’t mean we stop surviving. When you put men and women together, it’s only natural that babies are born."

Diffido: "Besides the people at the farm or Last Mistake, all the girls here look too young to be mothers."

Dolor: "That's your concern. Some of the males here have multiple wives—and where I'm from, that's not a good thing."

Iratus: "It's just a difference in cultures, but I will say that having a pair is probably a better way of doing things. Here, we didn't have any alternatives."

After the conversation, Iratus headed off to the river to join some of the others in fishing, still having a bit of a limp from his still healing leg.

---

Chapter 895

Iratus sat by the river, idly flicking his fishing pole as his bait floated uselessly on the water's surface. He had been at it for a while and hadn’t caught a single fish.

Resonantia sat nearby, her tail idly swaying as she watched.

Resonantia: "So, how are those fishing skills working out for you?"

Sutura, the hyena girl, snorted without looking up from her handheld gaming device.

Sutura: "I don't get why you're struggling. We had fishing poles in my time and everyone loved them."

Iratus glanced at the device in her hands. He still hadn’t figured out how she kept the thing charged, but she always seemed to have it running.

Resonantia: "You should’ve seen us when we first found them."

Sutura finally looked up, raising an eyebrow.

Sutura: "Oh?"

Resonantia: "Yeah. We had no clue what they were, so we just tossed them aside. Then Iratus got his hands on one and decided it was for ice fishing—stood knee-deep in the river, convinced he had it all figured out."

Sutura burst out laughing.

Sutura: "Wait, really? You—of all people—didn't understand a fishing pole?"

Iratus crossed his arms, looking away with mock indignation.

Iratus: "I understood the tool. I just… applied it the wrong way, that's all."

Resonantia smirked, stretching her arms behind her head.

Resonantia: "It's good to see you out and about again."

Iratus: "I've been around."

Resonantia: "I mean actually working again."

Iratus chuckled, shaking his head.

Iratus: "Ah, so that’s all I am to you? Just a workhorse?"

Sutura: "Well, you are kind of the guy leading the charge on getting that second wall built."

Iratus sighed, reeling in his empty line.

Iratus: "And yet, the fish remain unimpressed."

They all laughed, the conversation drifting off into a comfortable silence as the river water continued to flow.

---

Chapter 896

An hour later, Iratus was back at the tower, laying down a soft combat mat. He and Victoria stood at opposite ends, each wielding a dull practice longsword. Victoria had extra padding around her stomach, as her pregnancy was starting to show.

The raccoon girl moved with impressive agility, keeping up with Iratus's swift strikes, though he was careful to avoid hitting her belly. They started by shifting between stances, trying to gain an advantage—Iratus holding his blade high while Victoria kept hers to the side. Then she switched to a middle stance, and Iratus adjusted, holding his sword at his back.

With each strike, they transitioned between stances, their blades clashing in rapid succession. Some swings were too wide, easily avoided, while others were parried with precision.

After a series of wide attacks, the two came in closer for the finishing exchange. Victoria deflected an overhead strike with a rising block, then swiftly dropped her blade down. Iratus, unable to recover in time, felt a sharp slap to his side.

Iratus: "Ack."

Victoria: "Ha! Admit it, I've gotten better."

She flicked her raccoon tail in excitement, eyes gleaming with triumph.

Still catching his breath, Iratus smirked.

Iratus: "Maybe I was just caught off guard?"

Victoria chuckled and stepped in close, wrapping her arms around him in a warm embrace.

Victoria: "You keep everyone together, you know. Sometimes, I think you work too hard."

Iratus met her brown eyes before pulling her closer, pressing a slow lick to her neck. Victoria giggled, returning a soft nuzzle.

Iratus: "Don't worry, love. I'm taking time for myself."

Just then, Ignis walked in, waving at the pair.

Ignis: "If I may wedge between you two, I'd like some time with Iratus as well."

Victoria sighed, pulling away slightly.

Victoria: "You can’t take time off when you have so many relationships to maintain."

Iratus: "A sacrifice we agreed upon long ago."

---

Chapter 897

Iratus and Ignis strolled along a well-worn trail—a path forged by years of travel by the tower folk. The warm road wound its way around the ancient ruins of a stone structure, long sunken into the ground and nearly reclaimed by encroaching treeskins. As they walked, Ignis lifted her gaze to the radiant sun and let out a soft sigh.

Ignis: "I keep forgetting why you pace in the tower so often—I’m already overheated."

Iratus: "Yup."

Soon, Ignis pointed toward an unusual creature soaring overhead: a bird that looked like a red-feathered mix between an eagle and a cardinal.

Ignis: "Oh, look at that. Must be an animal from another world."

Iratus: "Huh, yeah. I can’t say I’ve seen one like that on my planet."

They paused for a minute to admire the bird's graceful flight before resuming their walk. As they circled back toward the tower, the light of the late afternoon began to mellow. By the time they reached home, Ignis gently rested a hand on her pregnant belly and let out a deep sigh.

Ignis: "Phew. I’m not sure if I’m just out of shape or genuinely running low on energy."

With a teasing smile and a warm tone, Iratus replied.

Iratus: "You'll get back into it. Before you know it, you'll be even more curvy and sexy than ever."

Ignis laughed, her eyes sparkling with affection.

Ignis: "You silly love. You act as if I'm not already fit. A little pregnancy only adds to my beauty."

Iratus: "Oh, forgive my insolence. You are supremely attractive—always have been—no matter how many little ones you carry."

Ignis playfully brushed her hand against his chest.

Ignis: "And don’t you ever forget it."

---

Chapter 898

Iratus walked into his tower kitchen and found Aestus, eyes half-lidded as she yawned while enjoying her meal.

Iratus: "How are you feeling, love?"

Aestus smiled wearily.

Aestus: "You've been asking that a lot lately."

Iratus: "I can't help it." He replied with a gentle laugh. "It's my duty to check on the well-being of my wives, especially when miracles like childbirth are at hand."

Aestus chuckled, brushing a stray hair from her face.

Aestus: "I'm just tired, as always. Give me a few more days, and we can get back to playing board games like we used to."

Iratus: "It will be nice to have the family together again. We've all been so busy—I'm really looking forward to resuming our regular game nights."

With a playful shake of her head, Aestus teased.

Aestus: "When everyone is having children so fast, it makes it hard to wind down. But unlike those overly cautious girls, I say we start up again tomorrow—or the day after, whichever comes first. How about that?"

A soft smile spread across Iratus's face as he stepped closer and gently took her hand.

Iratus: "You sure know how to get to my heart."

Aestus: "Gaming and having children—that's all you ever aspire to."

Iratus laughed warmly.

Iratus: "Pretty much."

Chapter 899

Another three days passed before Iratus spread out a rough map of the region. Although it was still very incomplete, he diligently marked key areas while Ignis handled the main drawing.

Just then, Salvos and Otiosus walked in and greeted him, and he returned a friendly wave.

Iratus: "You two came back quickly."

Salvos: "Well, it was a short look around. We couldn’t even get inside the Weather Tower—I think it’s a lot more ruined now."

Iratus: "The enemy or the Edax?"

The wolfman shrugged.

Salvos: "All I know is that it’s a mess—collapsed sections all over just by looking from the outside. And the little settlement has been completely abandoned. So, they left for sure this time."

Iratus: "Thank goodness. Hopefully, Purple City will remain on their side for years to come. I don’t suppose you found any of their lost horses, did you?"

Salvos: "Nope. They were gone when we fought there, and they remain gone—whether the humans took them or not."

Otiosus studied the incomplete map before looking back at Iratus and Ignis.

Otiosus: "Finally making a map? It's a bit, uh, empty."

At that, the redpanda girl gave a bit of a pout.

Ignis: "We've only just begun. I need to survey and measure our region a bit more, and then we'll have a proper map to work with."

Salvos: "What about the other patrols?"

Iratus: "The beach is clear—no signs of people whatsoever. The cave and the cold tunnel have also seen no activity. And then there’s the tower that once held a prisoner of the builders—still completely empty and broken."

Ignis: "We'll certainly need more manpower in the coming years."

Salvos: "Right, right. You know, we could send someone up the road to check the border—maybe even cross it and do some scouting."

Iratus: "I'm not so sure about that. Those crazies are always looking for any excuse to act, but perhaps setting up some kind of border patrol might be necessary."

Ignis: "Considering how far away that is, I must say again that we need more bodies to staff a military."

Iratus looked down at the map again, imagining it complete and wondering just how far he could extend the reach of his settlement with the manpower he currently had.

---

Chapter 900

Outside, Iratus saw his settlement alive with activity. Sutura returned carrying a bloodied plastic bin and handed it to Echo, who was busy cutting into a deer carcass in the cold room.

Sutura: "Guts gone."

In the background, Fraus, Arcus, and Praevalidum provided music for the bustling settlement. Iratus hadn't realized that the ant girl, Praevalidum, had such a talent for musical instruments; the drums and flutes offered a welcome distraction from the day's labors.

Meanwhile, Resolutio and Otiosus were preparing for another patrol around the settlement—or perhaps along some nearby roads. The three foxes, Odorem, Inlecebra, and Studium, were busy setting up the work area outside to resume construction on the second wall. Astrid and Confodere had teamed up to craft new weapons and armor, trying to sell their works whether for coin or favors.

Iter from the farm was also present, always on the lookout for new goods to purchase from the tower settlement, while Dolor and Diffido playfully pestered the goat man about the farm and the animals they kept.

Amidst the various activities around the courtyard, Iratus let out a contented sigh before turning to his other two wives, Victoria and Ignis, with the other two were busy with his children.

Victoria: "Well, if you're sure about this."

Iratus: "I think we should start mobilizing as soon as possible. While I don't trust that insane AI, Venatio was someone who put a lot of stock in AI and its ability to solve problems that organics never could. A war is coming, and we need everyone trained. We also need to send out expeditions to bring more people who have been transported into the Nexus Prime."

Victoria nodded, and Ignis called out to gather everyone’s attention.

Victoria: "You could have at least worn the crown."

Iratus: "God, you know I don't like the thought of being a monarch."

Victoria: "It seems inevitable."

Iratus: "Probably."

Once the settlement had crowded around him, Iratus began speaking.

Iratus: "Right, everyone, I have several announcements to make. My humble tower has expanded to accommodate not just my family, but many survivors and wanderers who have made it here alive. With the rise of Purple City and the threat it poses to our home, it is time to transform into something that can stand against that city-state."

He paused, allowing the news to settle in.

Iratus: "For my first announcement: it is time to stop being just a settlement. From now on, my settlement shall be called Lionhearth."
