Black Hole: The Book of Iratus, Episode 89

Chapter 881

The armor-clad ebony then started to walk forward, and Iratus shook his head.

Iratus: "Whoa, hold on—we just started making conversation!"

Iratus’s mind raced at the revelation that an ebony could actually talk. Among all these near-mindless monsters, this one had spoken. They were intelligent, but always seemed to  lacked any semblance of personhood, so Iratus was confused.

Iratus couldn’t retreat; his leg was still a wreck, so he was forced to stand his ground. The ebony used its longsaber to stab at him while the mouse boy did all he could with his longsword to deflect the attacks. With the ebony’s unrealistically long saber, Iratus could never get close and rapidly tried to think of a way out of his predicament. Luckily, Salvos and Deficio arrived with spears to aid their leader—though Iratus could see that the priest was wrapped in bandages.

Iratus: "Finally! Is everyone alive?"

The ebony split its attention among the three of them.

Salvos: "Like I said, many people are critically wounded." He lunged at the monster, piercing through the rivets of its armor. "We had to drag them to the settlement up there to start patching them up."

Deficio: "Sorry, we couldn’t get back here to aid you."

Iratus: "Literally fighting the entire enemy by myself."

Iratus saw Deficio slow down as blood began to seep from his bandages. The ebony took advantage by moving closer to the priest and using its mass to knock him prone, while Salvos leaped in to intercept the ebony’s attacks.

Iratus advanced and finally launched a series of stabs aimed at wounding the creature, but, of course, ebonys are far too durable to fall easily. Soon, the ebony slammed Salvos in the helmet several times before kicking him to the ground, though a well-placed stab by Iratus actually made the giant stagger. The ebony then turned its attention to Iratus, who found himself alone once again as his two allies lay down from fresh and old wounds, preventing them from continuing.

Chapter 882

Iratus had enough time to step back and glance at his sword—it was streaked with blood, a sign that the creature was finally taking real damage. The ebony charged, and when its armor deflected Iratus’s weapon, he had to grab onto the creature to avoid falling. It was an unwieldy grapple, the large monster straining to shake the mouse boy off. Eventually, the ebony managed to push Iratus away, and the two resumed slugging it out with their blades.

The ebony struggled to land any real blows until it realized something was amiss; it took several steps back, leaving Iratus unable to follow. Then the creature used its extended reach to stab at Iratus repeatedly. Iratus blocked one blow after another, using every ounce of strength to remain standing.

The ebony swung downward, and Iratus managed to block and deflect the strike to his side, though he was staggered and had to step back. The ebony advanced and swung in a wide arc that slammed into Iratus’s side, yet he continued to stand. Salvos was beginning to rise, drawing deep breaths—a struggle Iratus could relate to, as he too was truly starting to feel overwhelmingly tired.

The wolffolk man moved toward the ebony and silently signaled an attack to Iratus. The two, tails swishing and eyes darting over various openings on the creature, coordinated a simultaneous assault. However, the ebony collided with Salvos’s spear and tackled him to the ground, swiftly spinning its blade to deflect Iratus’s attempt to come to his ally’s aid.

The ebony then deflected another attack and countered, forcing Iratus to duck. As the creature came in for a body slam, the mouse boy gripped his blade with his other hand and expertly thrust it into the charging ebony. Iratus was tossed down, but the ebony was halted for a few seconds—time Iratus used to bounce back up, protesting the pain in his damaged leg.

After a deep exhale, Iratus readied himself as the ebony swung another strike. He raised his sword to parry the attack but was nearly pushed all the way down.

Iratus: "Come on, you can't leave me hanging on that word or name you spoke."

The ebony made another wide swing, but this time Iratus managed to step out of its path.

Iratus: "All you intelligent monsters like to monologue, so come on and do the thing."

He continued to step backward as the ebony advanced, swinging its blade like a mad animal.

Iratus: "What if I say please?"

Glancing around, Iratus saw Otiosus beginning to recover. All he had to do was hold on.

---

Chapter 883

Iratus took another step back, and the ebony swiped again—but it was slow enough that Iratus didn’t even have to dodge. Suddenly, he could hear the creature’s breath and even his own, both ragged and out of stamina. Otiosus walked up to him.

Otiosus: "Sorry I couldn't help."

Iratus: "Forget that. The only thing that matters is that you aren't bleeding out."

Iratus then saw Salvos pick himself up and start walking over. The ebony stopped moving and stood in place, and although Iratus wanted to attack, he found himself too winded to do more than catch his breath.

Otiosus: "Have you gone beserk yet?"

Iratus: "I’ve spent all my energy on that human guy. I’m way too tired now."

Iratus glanced over at Deficio, who was still on the ground. The lion man couldn’t stand and was clutching his wounds, but at least he looked alive.

Otiosus: "The ebony, is it really just going to stand there?"

Iratus: "I guess we never considered that monsters could run out of stamina."

Otiosus: "These things are your area—nobody else here has run into them."

Salvos: "Well, I’m pretty sure this one is unique—uh, even more so. This thing spoke. Ta’avah, I think it said."

Iratus: "Glad you remembered. What a funky name."

Otiosus: "But is it the ebony's name?"

Iratus turned to the ebony.

Iratus: "Hey big guy, is Ta'avah your name?"

There was a moment of silence.

Iratus: "Worth a try."

---

Chapter 884

Iratus shifted his weight onto his wounded leg and discovered it wasn’t as bad as before—giving him a much-needed confidence boost. He could now hear the creature’s breathing steadying, and he knew the fight was about to resume.

Moving to the side, Iratus observed as Otiosus inserted a dagger into his mouth and raised his spear—retrieved after losing it earlier—while Salvos drew closer, his own spear at the ready.

The three combatants advanced steadily toward the ebony, which raised its longsaber and began making defensive swings to create space—a move that made Iratus raise an eyebrow.

Taking the initiative, Iratus stepped forward as the others followed, thrusting their spears at the armored monster while Iratus prepared his strike. The ebony swung its sword, forcing Iratus to dodge before recovering and delivering a swift stab toward Salvos with true swordsmanship.

Otiosus attempted to drive his spear in further while Salvos tried to fend off the monster. However, the ebony countered by using its longsaber as a club, beating the wolf-man to the ground. Iratus managed another stab, but the ebony shoved him down and then turned its focus to the other mousefolk. Pushed back, Otiosus tried to feint around the massive creature—only to be immediately halted when it slammed its saber into his shins. The blow made him gasp in pain before collapsing to his knees.

Iratus tried to press in again, but the ebony was swift enough to dodge his attack and counter with its blade. At close range, its strikes did little real damage; however, once the ebony created some space, it regained the proper range to swing at Iratus, who could only dodge.

Desperately trying to close the distance, Iratus darted around wherever he could—but every attempt was met with a crushing strike from the saber. Scanning his surroundings for any advantage, he saw the ebony take another long step forward and swing its blade. The impact sent Iratus crashing onto one knee. Then, the ebony raised its blade high into the air, preparing to strike with all its strength.

 ---

Chapter 885

Otiosus was somehow back on his feet, having scrambled up onto the giant and plunged his dagger into its neck—blood seeping from between the armored plates.

Otiosus in maddened rage: "We are the children of Wrath—don't underestimate us!"

The ebony shook a few times before spinning, attempting to fling the mousefolk off its back.

Iratus noticed an opening and moved in to strike, but as the ebony completed its spin, he saw its blade coming in—a spinning strike that, while impractical in direct combat, served as an effective lure to draw him close.

Gritting his teeth, Iratus not only blocked the attack but also grabbed the spinning blade—a move he would never attempt if it were any sharper. This pause allowed Otiosus to withdraw his dagger and stab right back in. The ebony grunted low and tried to overpower Iratus, managing to pry the blade from his grasp. Just as the creature began to charge again, it halted when Iratus clutched the edge of his own blade.

Iratus started to think that the same trick wouldn't work twice as he saw the ebony stop. Then, he saw the ebony crouch down, leap several feet into the air, and land on its back. The impact knocked the wind out of Otiosus, who was crushed beneath it.

Seizing the opportunity, Iratus turned on the creature as it struggled to rise. Still gripping the edge of his blade, he drove it into an opening in the monster’s armor. The ebony buckled, but through sheer effort, managed to stand despite the pain—and then pushed Iratus off.

Iratus assumed a defensive stance, but the ebony turned to stomp Otiosus. Before Iratus could intervene, the creature spun back to face him.

Iratus: "Come on! Let's go, you rejected creation of God!"

His eyes widened as he heard the ebony emit a moan—a sound that, surprisingly, carried a note of sorrow. Had he hurt the creature’s feelings?

---

Chapter 886

The battle had raged long enough that the clouds finally parted. Although Nexus Prime remained a moonless planet, a calm began to settle over the battlefield. Bioluminescent plants and insects stirred to life, casting a bit more light over the surroundings—even if it was coming from distant trees, any extra illumination was welcome.

Iratus sighed as the ebony’s chest armor finally gave way and clattered to the ground after enduring so much abuse. Beneath the shattered plates, the ebony’s pure black skin was revealed—though one arm remained armored, while the other was clad in squirrel-hide.

Taking a new stance, Iratus watched as the ebony bent down to retrieve its chest armor. It examined the design of the broken armor before speaking.

Ebony: "Ex Tenebris ad Lucem." Its voice was deep and guttural, each word delivered as though it were a challenge. "What strange emotions he must have had."

Iratus: "Oh, now you speak again—and it sounds like you’re talking to yourself, too. So, who are you?"

The ebony removed its helmet and dropped it to the ground; its visor was caved in, seemingly impairing its vision—or so Iratus assumed. The creature’s head resembled a goat’s skull, yet it was covered in some flesh and fur, and it even had real, brown eyes.

Ebony: "Ex Tenebris ad Lucem is who he once was; now, the will of Ta'avah inhabits this host."

The ebony’s expression remained deadpan, as if no one was home.

Iratus: "Any chance you could tell me why the wills of Ta'avah are all murderous?"

Without another word, the ebony advanced and began launching its attacks.

Iratus: "Oh, okay—guess our chat has ended again."

Iratus desperately tried to block and dodge, but he was so exhausted that his defenses barely held.

---

Chapter 887

The ebony’s mouth opened wide, and black drool began to pour out, its expression remaining a corpse-like stare. As it drew closer to Iratus, the dark void returned—something that should have been impossible without the living sludge in the ebony’s lantern.

Iratus was slammed into the ground. He quickly scrambled to his feet and ran out of the darkness’s range, noticing that the drool was covering part of the silver lantern around the ebony’s neck.

Iratus: "Could you at least tell me how that darkness works? I’m sick of all the space people saying magic isn’t real, despite all the nonsense this planet has to offer."

The ebony did not respond; it continued forward like a relentless stalker pursuing its prey. Up close, the darkness returned, robbing Iratus of his sight—but his senses were sharp. He relied on his hearing to brace for one strike, then duck another swipe. Iratus struck at the darkness and landed a solid hit before leaping to the side, perfectly anticipating an attack and blocking another swing.

Using his swordsmanship, Iratus parried the blow and created an opening to slam his sword into the ebony—more precisely, into the chain holding the lantern. The chain popped, and the silver lantern fell to the ground, causing the supernatural darkness to fade with it.

Just as Iratus began to feel that victory was within reach, he fell to one knee when the ebony low-kicked his damaged leg. This time, he heard something creak—or even snap. Gasping in pain, he tried to refocus on the fight, lifting his blade to meet the ebony’s. Soon, Iratus realized that without movement he couldn’t deliver any more blows. He was stuck, and the ebony retracted its blade before swinging its saber like a bat, slamming into the mostly defenseless Iratus.

After a few such swings—and while still clinging on—the mouse boy taunted the ebony.

Iratus: "If that's all you have, you can't win."

The ebony grabbed Iratus and hoisted him to its feet, and Iratus could no longer maintain his grip on his longsword. Despite the creature’s massive strength, it was still bound by physics and couldn't lift him higher into the air. Using his mouse tail, Iratus managed to retrieve his short sword and stab the ebony’s neck. In response, the creature dropped him back to the ground—costing Iratus his second blade.

---

Chapter 888

Iratus retrieved his hammer and mentally slapped himself, realizing that hammers were meant for armored foes. While the ebony might not have been the best opponent to use a hammer against, the armored humans would have been. Regardless, he hurled the hammer at the creature’s head, landing a direct hit that delivered a satisfying whack.

Iratus rolled onto his fallen blade—his trusty longsword—but didn’t have time to stand up again as the ebony stabbed downward. Lacking the strength to block the entire attack, he focused instead on staying upright. He shifted his weight onto his already-damaged leg, which felt as if it were breaking apart, even as the ebony’s blade slashed at his neck and face.

The ebony’s blade was too long to maneuver effectively, and by the time it switched stances to pull its blade in for defense, Iratus had already sliced into the creature’s neck. After a half-second pause, the mouse boy, with manic anger in his gold eyes, raised his blade as high as he could before dragging it down in the longest drawn cut he could muster.

After the attack, Iratus looked up only to see the ebony crack his face with the butt end of its saber, sending him sprawling to the ground. Before Iratus could even attempt to crawl, the ebony stomped on his good leg—another sickening pop forcing a pained grunt from him. Iratus raised his blade in defense, but the ebony only looked down with that same corpse-like expression—a dead stare that said nothing.

After a full two seconds, the ebony finally fell to its knees while Iratus rolled aside. Managing only to kneel on one knee, he sighed in relief as the ebony collapsed face-first into the muddy, rocky ground.

The fight was over, and Iratus had no choice but to sit there and wait for someone to come help him up. He covered his nose as the scent of blood—from allies, enemies, and the ebony alike—began to overwhelm him. After about ten minutes, Odorem returned, and the fox man shook his head at the carnage.

Odorem: "What did I miss?"

Iratus: "Just a normal day in the Nexus Prime."

---

Chapter 889

The next day, Iratus and his party were still at the enemy settlement, which they had turned into an impromptu hospital. Iratus could stand, but his injured leg would take much longer to heal. Luckily, nothing appeared to be permanently broken or in need of an operation.

Echo was still in critical condition, and the group had managed to get him onto a cot, planning to transport him to the hospital back home. Malignitas was in rough shape but insisted he was fine, even though he walked awkwardly. Resolutio and Astrid had recovered enough and were both doing fine. Deficio, Otiosus, and Fraus couldn’t be moved, but they only needed a few days to rest and recover.

Commercium, Confodere, and Salvos also needed some time to heal, though they were nearly as healthy as Resolutio and Astrid.

Odorem was fine, as were the two children, Dolor and Diffido.

Rations were handed out, and Iratus finally had some time to talk with the two kids.

Iratus: "So, how have you two been so far?"

Dolor: "What do you mean?"

The slightly older child understood the question.

Diffido: "Well, we are unhurt."

Iratus: "As long as you two aren’t hurt or anything."

Diffido: "I mean, they roughed us up, but it isn’t too bad. They held us hostage, and I still don’t understand why."

Iratus: "Bad people do bad things. That's the short version. So, what do you two plan to do now?"

Dolor: "I don't know."

Dolor was beginning to get upset—the kidnapping, harsh treatment, and battle had finally caught up with him—while Diffido maintained an eerie, analytical demeanor that helped him process the trauma.

Diffido: "Well, we can’t just keep wandering through the wilderness. If your people aren’t crazy or something, then I ask that we be allowed to stay."

Dolor: "Oh, yeah! Can we stay with you?"

Iratus: "Hmm, abandon two children or take them in—this is a tough decision."

Dolor: "What? No way, you can't leave us out here."

Iratus chuckled.

Diffido: "So that's a yes?"

Iratus: "Of course."

Off to the side, three humans had also been captured. They were the only enemies to survive their wounds, and, of course, they were locked up in their own room. Unfortunately for Iratus, those three didn’t speak his language, so they were confined with minimal care.

---

Chapter 890

A short meeting was held, and a plan was made. Echo would be carried by Resolutio, Astrid, Iratus, and Malignitas.

Malignitas: "Are you sure I can't bunk here for another day?"

Iratus: "You'd probably torcher the prisoners or something without supervision."

The one-eyed feline rolled his eye and retorted,

Malignitas: "My, thanks for having so much faith in me, oh great leader."

Iratus thought Malignitas was certainly an asshole, but at least he was on their side and had proven it multiple times.

The two kids would also be coming along, while everyone else stayed behind to heal a bit more before leaving and releasing the prisoners. With everything set, Iratus and his group moved out toward home. Along the way, he had to answer the kids’ questions, as they had no idea what the Nexus Prime was.

Iratus explained that everyone here was already dead, but some advanced machines had the technology to capture people’s souls and bring them to this world. Diffido, clearly from a more advanced place, understood concepts like robots and even knew a surprising amount about the Nexus Prime. Dolor, on the other hand, struggled to keep up. This also confirmed Iratus’s suspicion that Dolor’s clothes were from this world and not from wherever he originally came from.

The two children explained that during their journey, they encountered several monsters, including an ebony that was chasing a poor group of sharkfolk. What unsettled Iratus was how both children initially thought humans were just another type of monster. He tried to correct them, but their first impression wasn’t going to change anytime soon.

After a full day of travel, Iratus and his group finally returned to his settlement. As soon as they arrived, people gathered around, eager for details. Wasting no time, Iratus quickly organized another group to take Echo to the hospital up north, even arranging for them to take the boat. Once that was settled, he sat the others down to debrief them on everything that had happened.
