Black Hole: The Book of Iratus, Episode 86
Chapter 851
Facing the long, sweeping saber of his foe, Iratus decided that fleeing was no longer an option. Instead, he dove low—just in time to feel the monstrous blade whoosh past his head. Rising quickly, he estimated the arc of the enemy’s arm and lunged forward. With a swift, precise thrust, his longsword found its mark: he drove it straight into the lantern chained around the creature’s neck.
The lantern’s inner chamber oozed a black, viscous goo that let out a horrible screech before it melted away, as if its power was being neutralized. Almost instantly, the darkness that had engulfed Iratus lifted. Now, Iratus could clearly see the space around him—and the ebony enemy itself, still clad in its mismatched armor and patched together with stolen squirrel hides.
Without warning, the creature took a heavy step forward and slammed the pommel of its saber into Iratus’s face. The force sent him reeling, and he collapsed in an effort to mitigate the blow. The ebony tried to follow up by sweeping its weapon in a wide, arcing strike—but the cramped office prevented a clean hit. Seizing the opening, Iratus scrambled back to his feet. He watched as the armored creature turned, perhaps to assess the regrouping of his allies. Instead of reengaging him directly, the creature charged straight toward the backdoor—the entrance leading to the bunker.
For several long, disbelieving seconds, Iratus blinked, processing that his foe had simply run off. Whether the creature was laying a trap or fleeing to regroup, its sudden disappearance left him with a bitter, unexpected victory.
Iratus muttering: "Well, okay then. I guess we win."
The goat woman was the first one up and battle-ready.
Resolutio: "Considering the size of that stupid weapon, it’s probably heading outside so it can swing it around properly."
Astrid, still a bit unsteady from the skirmish, pushed herself up.
Astrid: "I'm alright, I'm alright."
Not long after, the nix woman staggered and then collected her bearings. Otiosus couldn’t help but chime in with a teasing edge.
Otiosus: "Why are you so dazed? Weren’t you the one who always bragged about your ancestors’ ability to wage war?
Astrid: "I’d say the same to you—you only got thrown into a wall! Where were you?"
The mousefolk shrugged.
Otiosus: "Trying to breathe. That wall really hurt."
Suddenly, Iratus’s expression shifted to concern.
Iratus: "Wait, where is Salvos?"
The group made their way over to a nearby office space, where they found the wolf man struggling to rise. Salvos lay half-amazed and half-embarrassed near a shattered window, clearly having had a rough encounter. With a hint of sarcasm, Otiosus grinned as he spoke.
Otiosus: "Doh, he's fine. Let's go."
Salvos: "Thanks for nothing. Can I get a hand?"
Resolutio marched over without hesitation and helped him clamber through the broken window, ensuring he was steady on his feet before rejoining the group.
Otiosus: "We aren't going to follow that thing, are we?" He pointed towards the backdoor.
Iratus: "It might be better to try the front door. It might be safer even if our true foes are probably guarding it."
---
Chapter 852
The rest of the tower was as mundane as everything else—except for the control room. The front door was easy to spot. As Iratus surveyed the room one last time before leaving, he couldn’t help but notice the stark contrast between the building’s elements. On one hand, the control room boasted an air of functionality with its plain desks, benches, and computers; on the other, the stairs, tiles, and glass showcased impressive craftsmanship, though they still lacked a true high-tech aesthetic. Finally, his eyes landed on the front door: a grimy, dark gray steel plate shoved unceremoniously into the wall.
Iratus: "I was kind of hoping for some super high-tech equipment to loot, but all we have is just...nothing."
Otiosus: "Well, I picked up a few of the office things. Your handmade paper and ink are nice and all, but I just grabbed a year's worth of work."
Iratus: "You’re right. Now I almost want to go back and grab more."
Resolutio was already by the door, looking out.
Resolutio: "Hm, I don’t see any guards, and I doubt they have snipers on watch."
Astrid: "If they had guns, we wouldn’t have gotten this far. Still, we really should have approached with more caution."
Iratus: "Well, it's time to see if we get ambushed or not."
The group exited the tower and descended into the mountain along a flight of stone steps—primitive in design yet clearly well made. Resolutio was the first to notice a cluster of structures carved into the cliff face. Dominating the settlement was a large forge, the most identifiable building in the lot.
Resolutio: "And there is their fort."
Iratus: "Right. This is what I saw from the tower. I suspect William lived here, well, he and possibly the rest of the enemy."
Otiosus: "We really should have asked more questions, but regardless, this place must certainly be our foe's place of rest. Let's burn it down."
Iratus: "I'm not really into that. I just want to believe that with the weather control system destroyed, they'll eventually retreat back to Purple City."
Meanwhile, the wolfman, Salvos, was lagging a few steps behind.
Salvos: "Do we even know if they’re from Purple City? I don’t think those guys would keep their word, but it’d be crazy to break it so soon."
Iratus: "I think the less conflict, the better. Let's head home."
Resolutio: "If that’s your wish, then I’ll follow." Her eyes lingered on the settlement—a silent admission that she’d been itching for a fight.
Otiosus: "I...yeah. I'll follow your lead." Even he couldn’t hide his displeasure at leaving enemies alive.
Astrid and Salvos remained silent, their expressions unreadable. With one last lingering glance at the settlement, Iratus led the group down the stairs, leaving behind a bitter mix of unresolved tension and reluctant resignation.
---
Chapter 853
The settlement lay silent. The tower entrance and even the final step of the stairs were completely unguarded. As the group made their way across the barren plateau, not a single enemy stirred.
Astrid: "You all were saying there’d be horses and enemies around every corner, but it’s been pretty quiet."
Salvos: "I definitely smelled their presence. If you ask me, they’re probably holed up inside the tower."
Otiosus: "I wonder if their horses can even manage those stairs."
Salvos: "There was still some foliage along the cliff face. If I followed my nose, then surely we would find the stables."
Resolutio: "I would say how foolish, but given where their settlement is, I guess hiding it down here is their best choice."
The weather machine was destroyed not too long ago, and now Iratus could feel warmth as the group made it down the forest below. The night was already in full swing by the time Iratus's group made it to the forest, and the light drizzle of rain continued throughout it. They trudged for hours through the dark, guided by the faint glow of bioluminescent bugs and hardy, glowing plants. At last, they came upon a large boulder—a natural refuge around which they set up a makeshift camp. Though they hastily constructed shelters to ward off the drizzle, the brief respite did little to ease their weariness.
Iratus would wake with Resolutio being the last person on watch and looked the worse. The group packed up and made their way home, and with nothing coming out to attack them, they reached Iratus's settlement and headed for bed, since the day was mostly spent on just travel.
Otiosus: "The most anti-climactic quest."
Iratus: "Hardly. We have an ebony and an enemy squad out there."
The other mouse merely laughed before responding.
Otiosus: "We delved into a dungeon and faced no final boss."
Iratus: "Those are terms from beyond your time."
Otiosus: "I’ve been on this planet long enough to appreciate its technological wonders"
Before Iratus could say more, Victoria and Aestus appeared, gently pulling him aside.
Victoria: "Are you guys okay?"
Aestus: "Hurry and tell us what happened."
Otiosus shrugged.
Otiosus: "I'll just head to bed. Pleasure working with you, Iratus."

Chapter 854
After the chaos, the remainder of the day was spent recovering and recounting what had happened. The following morning, Iratus dispatched messengers to Last Mistake and the Eastern Farm to explain the situation and warn them about the roaming foes and monsters.
Life at the settlement had slowed considerably. Anyone venturing out needed a sizable group to stand against monsters or enemy forces, which made even simple tasks like hunting or scavenging a challenge. Iratus mostly stayed behind to oversee construction and other projects. With many of the settlement’s women pregnant, their overall fighting strength was diminished, so most residents remained behind to guard their home rather than risk leaving it undefended.
Three days later, Iratus received a summons from Last Mistake. Despite the dangers, he traveled alone and arrived to meet the few people gathered there.
Confodere: "Good, you have finally arrived. Come over to the forge—I’ll show you what we’ve been working on."
Liora, the deer woman, waved at Iratus, who returned the gesture with a nod.
Iratus: "If you’d been working on something, you could have told me. We might have been able to help."
Confodere: "This was mostly a side project started by Venatio, God rest her soul."
Liora: "That woman was always complaining about not knowing what she was doing, yet she crafted so many things."
Iratus: "Yeah, that’s her. If no one else will do it, then I will. I’m glad we managed to pick up where she left off."
Inside the forge, the hyena man guided Iratus toward a work table laden with fragments of bronze armor. Iratus examined the various pieces—arm guards, leg greaves, and other fittings.
Confodere: "Normally, we can only produce basic gear—leather, gambeson, and a simple breastplate. But now, we’re able to create finer work."
Iratus inspected a set of arm armor and greaves, nodding appreciatively.
Iratus: "This is good stuff. It isn't complete coverage, but this is good enough."
Confodere: "Leg protection isn’t our top priority—historically, the legs have always been the least armored in warfare. Since we managed to produce your arm guards, we’ve pushed forward to improve overall protection for everyone."
Iratus: "If you need money for these upgrades, how much are we talking?"
Confodere: "Oh, right—I almost forgot that we now have a currency. I’ll work out the details. Until then, when you return to the tower, make sure you get the others and the farm folk to place an order for more armor."
---
Chapter 855
Later that day, as dusk settled over the bustling tower, Iratus made his way to the communal kitchen. He was drawn by the inviting aromas of roasting meats and fresh herbs, while the clatter of pots and pans mingled with bursts of laughter—and the occasional spark from a temperamental microwave.
Stepping into the kitchen, Iratus’s golden eyes lit up as he surveyed his beloved wives gathered around the long wooden table.
Iratus: "Another delicious meal, my loves."
Aestus was the most enthusiastic.
Aestus: "We worked so hard on this one! After you faced that small army out there, we knew you deserved the biggest feast we could muster."
Iratus grinned.
Iratus: "We never did get to fight them, but hey, I always have a big appetite."
He started to dig into the food while across the table, Ignis interjected with a note of concern.
Ignis: "I hope you're all eating well. That brief cold snap almost wiped out our plants. It is highly probable that we'll be starting the garden from scratch again!"
Victoria had just finished wrestling with the temperamental microwave, its copper wiring hissing sparks.
Victoria: "Am I doing something wrong, or is it just this contraption's way of telling us it needs a break?"
Resonantia: "Maybe ask Ignis? After all, she's the only one among us who's ever really mastered these modern contraptions."
Ignis shrugged, a playful glint in her golden eyes.
Ignis: "I only know enough about electricity to keep it from short-circuiting our dreams. The rest of the work goes to the brave souls who set up all our infrastructure."
A comfortable silence settled over the room, punctuated by the soft clink of cutlery and murmurs of conversation. Victoria gently rubbed her pregnant belly—a simple act that filled Iratus with a warm, quiet joy.
After the meal, the family briefly discussed what to do about the enemy forces and the lurking monsters. Their conversation, however, was short-lived; soon the girls were called away to tend to their babies, leaving Iratus practically alone with the post-feast cleanup.
---
Chapter 856
The next day, Iratus and his hunting party set out—not so much to kill as to scout the area for enemy activity. As they traveled through a landscape where lingering patches of snow still mingled with the warmth of the sun, Iratus noted how animals had begun emerging again to bask in the light.
The patrol swept widely across the terrain and found nothing unusual until late in the day. By then, they had ventured far enough north to reach a series of caves. Approaching one cave in particular, a terrible odor reached Iratus’s nostrils, compelling him to investigate further.
Salvos: "I'd say rotting corpses, but the smell just doesn't quite fit."
Malignitas: "Blah, blah, blah. I'm so bored that there better be something in there that we can kill."
Iratus sarcastically: "Please, don't be so patient."
The three of them strode into the cave with a mix of bravery and neglect for caution. Deep inside, they discovered a burned patch of stone with areas blackened and rotting away. Iratus took out his flashlight and revealed the scene, something that looked like the remnants of an ebony nest—scorched and ruined.
Iratus: "Salvos, what can you gather from this?"
Salvos: "I’m not getting much here—the residue is overwhelming most smells. Let’s step outside and see if we can track something or someone down."
After a brief search around the cave’s perimeter, Salvos’s keen nose picked up a new scent. The group soon found a pile of fresh horse droppings. Salvos leaned in for a deep, disdainful sniff, his expression wrinkling in disgust.
Salvos: "Ack—gross. These droppings are recent. I can’t detect any human odor, but I’m definitely picking up the horses. They were here today."
Iratus nodded.
Iratus: "They must have been tracking that ebony. At least, it looks like someone—maybe even the enemy—prevented another one from spawning."
Malignitas: "Yeah, thanks for the help, losers."
Iratus: "I still don't like the fact that these foes are still around."
Malignitas continued with his harsh but still playful sarcasm.
Malignitas: "Oh no, the people trying to kill us are still trying to kill us. Maybe next time we should wag our finger a little harder at them."
Iratus: "Maybe we should."
Malignitas: "Wait, what?"
Iratus: "If they aren’t leaving on their own, then perhaps it’s time we find out why—or force them to leave."
---
Chapter 857
Another day had passed, and Iratus gathered his allies in the settlement’s courtyard. Clusters of folk had formed along the edges—some listening intently, others, the battle-ready, clustered near the center. Representing the eastern farmers was Commercium, while Confodere spoke for Last Mistake from the south.
Iratus: "I’m tired of not knowing what’s going on in that rival tower to the north. I propose we send a scouting team to find out what they’re up to."
Resolutio: "It’s a sound idea, but remember—the area around their tower is nothing but a barren stretch. There’s hardly any cover."
Fraus: "Are you sure we shouldn’t send fighters instead? Scouts are one thing, but what if we run into trouble?"
Inlecebra: "Is there no way to get these man things to talk to us?"
Odorem shook his head.
Odorem: "Brother, you’ve heard the tales of Purple City. These folks aren’t negotiators."
Praevalidum: "If one were to send an army, surely these men are not of qualifying numbers?" The ant girl tilted her head. "Or does Purple City lack the manpower to fight us?"
Salvos: "Where I come from, they’d be considered Special Forces. It’s less about conventional warfare and more about covert operations that the regular military can’t handle."
Studium: "If they’re reliant on horses, perhaps we could lure them into a spot where those mounts are useless, forcing a close encounter."
After the banter, the mouse boy raised his hand, prompting silence.
Iratus: "All good ideas, but my priority is simply to see what’s happening. Let’s take a two-step approach—send out a small scouting party, but keep reinforcements nearby in case things get violent."
A murmur of agreement rippled through the group, though some still hesitated. After a moment of contemplation, Resolutio broke the silence.
Resolutio: "I don’t think it’s the best idea, but if we must send scouts, then so be it."
No one was going to argue with the goat woman, so no disagreements were given.
Iratus: "Then it is time to prepare."
Commercium: "I hope you’re not suggesting anyone from the farm go. We barely have enough to guard it as is."
Confodere: "It is only a problem if the enemy is wandering out here or if the ebony is hunting any of you." Turning to Iratus. "If we leave my wife here, then everyone from Last Mistake should be able to go."
The meeting continued for several minutes as they debated who would take part and how best to organize the operation. When all was finally agreed upon, it was decided that the scouting mission would commence in two days.
---
Chapter 858
The day of the operation finally arrived. As early morning light filtered through the settlement walls, preparations were in full swing. Warriors strapped on gear, checked weapons, and adjusted armor with practiced precision. The air hummed with a mix of anticipation and tension.
Iratus made his rounds, bidding quiet farewells to his wives. Each parting was marked by warm smiles and hushed words of encouragement.
Resonantia: "Every time you face another strange occurrence or quest, I can’t help but feel uneasy."
Aestus, ever the optimist, laughed lightly,
Aestus: "Pah, he’ll be fine. He’s never lost a battle yet."
Iratus: "Thanks for the vote of confidence."
Ignis and Victoria gave their own smiles and wishes to Iratus while Salvos hugged his naga wife goodbye and Confodere did the same with Liora.
Malignitas: "I can't wait for everything to go wrong, as usual, and start slapping enemies like there is no tomarrow."
Fraus: "Malignitas, you’re making all of us felines look bad."
Malignitas with a smirk: "As if we don’t love a good fight."
Elsewhere, Arcus, Praevalidum, and Sutura—dressed for combat but assigned to remain behind for local defense—exchanged light banter.
Arcus: "You look great in that gambeson, Sutura."
Praevalidum: "Post certainly."
Sutura: "I don't see how anyone can look good in these thick things."
Meanwhile, Echo, Resolutio, Otiosus, Odorem, and Astrid double-checked their gear, readying themselves for departure.
Inlecebra: "I'm going to laugh if you die out there."
Odorem: "Challenge accepted, little brother."
Salvos: "Glad our spirits are so high."
Iratus chuckled at the sibling banter—calling Odorem "little brother" was amusing, given they were barely a year apart.
Just then, from the gate, Commercium strode in fully armored.
Deficio: "Oh, so you’re joining us today, are you."
Commercium: "I could say the same to you. Aren't you a priest?"
Deficio: "You’ve seen me tolerate battle before. I don’t see why it’s shocking that I’m heading into another one. Besides, I’m here to take on the ebony—not engage in senseless warfare with men. Fighting people is tragic enough, but monsters… they must be destroyed."
Confodere stepped up beside Iratus, nudging him lightly.
Confodere: "I thought you would have tried it on already."
Iratus shook his head and saw the hyena man next to him.
Iratus: "Sorry, tried what on?"
Confodere: "The gear I brought for you. Care to see how it fits?"
---
Chapter 859
Opening the chest, Iratus's golden eyes widened. Inside was not bronze armor but gleaming steel—a full set covering nearly every part of his body except for a few key spots on his legs.
Iratus: "Whoa."
He lifted the left pauldron to examine its intricate design. It was two fierce cat eyes that stared back at him, set above a sword handle that extended downward into a blade etched across the surface. The tip was cut off cleanly at the edge of the metal.
Confodere: "I did some research and learned that that is the Lionheart crest."
Iratus: "This is amazing. Thank you. But where did you get all this steel?"
Confodere: "Do you not remember all those abandoned cars and scrap heaps lying around?" He chuckled. "As long as you smelt out the junk, you can remake anything. And hey, steel’s a lot better than bronze. Figured it was time we stepped up our game."
Iratus smirked: "Then I’d better make sure this doesn’t go to waste."
After suiting up in the formidable new armor, Iratus assembled the scouting party. With final farewells and equipment checks complete, the group left the settlement and ventured into the untamed wilderness.
The days had finally returned to their full heat, and while it wasn't too bad north, it was still enough for everyone to drink often. Iratus led the way with Resolutio and Otiosus flanking him as the two carried themselves as soldiers better than anyone else.
Astrid carried a bolt-action rifle, while Fraus kept Resonantia’s bow secured. Odorem, visibly irritated by his gambeson and bronze gear, frequently fanned his fur-covered body. Echo trailed at the rear keeping vigilance.
Salvos walked outside the formation, nose twitching as he tracked scents along their route. Commercium toyed with his handgun—how he'd found more ammo remained a mystery—while Confodere checked the tension on his crossbow string.
Bringing up the rear were Deficio and Malignitas, the latter humming a low, eerie tune as though daring the wilderness to pick a fight.
Iratus sighed inwardly. This wasn't what he’d envisioned. The group was far larger than a simple scout team—it was practically a strike force now.
The journey was long, punctuated by short rests and hikes through dense thickets. When they finally reached the plateau, Otiosus spoke up.
Otiosus: "So, if we happen upon that William guy, what's our stance?"
Iratus: "Just be careful. We don’t know if he’s with them or a victim of circumstance. Best bet is to watch him closely or avoid him altogether until we know more."
Otiosus: "Got it."
They pressed on until the landscape shifted to flat plains of dirt and rugged mountainous rock. The thick fog from before had returned, heavier and denser this time. Though the sky remained pale and overcast, rain loomed on the horizon.
The journey stretched well into the late afternoon, shadows growing long as dusk threatened to descend. Iratus scanned the terrain but saw no signs of movement—no enemies, no encampments, nothing out of place.
With a quick hand signal, he directed Salvos, Echo, and Otiosus to advance into the fog and scout toward the distant tower.
Iratus gave an exhaule to calm his nerves.
---
Chapter 860
The rain finally started to fall, but only as a drizzle. Iratus scratched his chin as he looked out on the oppressive fog. Iratus scratched his chin as he surveyed the shrouded expanse.
Iratus: "With the thick fog, we could actually move up a bit without being seen."
Fraus: "It'd be nice to get closer in case they need our help."
Resolutio: "Considering the distance across this open stretch, I agree. We need a better vantage point."
Iratus: "If we miss our allies or run into trouble, we’ll need someone to bail us out. Deficio, Malignitas—you two stay here for now."
Malignitas: "Unless you’re just using us as bait for whatever monster’s lurking out here."
Iratus: "If only."
Malignitas with a smile: "Whatever. Get out of here and try not to die."
With that, the main group began their cautious march through the swirling fog, spreading wide to cover more ground. Iratus felt tense with each step, unsure if he was making the right call.
Suddenly, the distant thunder of hooves made everyone stop and wait. Enemy horsemen patrolled nearby. The group dropped low, weapons drawn and senses on high alert. The sound of pounding hooves grew louder before fading into the distance. Then, Iratus could hear a battle happening, but since no one was yelling for help, it most certainly could not be his people. The smell of blood started to fill the air, and everyone was looking at Iratus to see what he would do. Swords clanged against armor, and guttural cries came from the fog. Iratus tensed, listening closely.
Resolutio whispering: "Is the ebony fighting the enemy?"
Iratus nodded slowly, thinking fast. This could be the perfect time to strike. If the ebony and enemy forces weakened each other, his group might be able to finish the job without taking heavy losses. Still, his caution gnawed at him as if something could go wrong.
The temptation to wait and let the chaos play out was strong, but before he could decide, a sudden shout shattered his thoughts.
Salvos: "We need help!"
With a fierce determination, Iratus stood back up.
Iratus: "Let's go!"
