Halloween Countdown
-Creepy Classics-
no.3: Dr. Delambre "The Fly" - The Fly (1958)

One thing I wanted to avoid doing for the Creepy Classics sub-category was filling it with nothing but the Universal classics we've all come to love and frankly expect - Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, Wolf Man, Creature from the Black Lagoon, etc. While those are all great movies/characters that could easily fill a spot, I don't want this to be completely predictable! Sure, enjoying a familiar face is great and all, but what's the point if I can't give you some unexpected content? (Though, at the risk of giving anything away, don't give up hope entirely one some of those mentioned~)

Much like the Blob, I'll admit my preference lies with the 80's remake of the Fly. However, I feel like the silhouette of the scientist with the giant fly head and hand is vastly more iconic then Cronenberg's "Brundlefly." So much so that I'd pit him with the likes of those Universal heavyweights I mentioned prior and while I may prefer the remake I can't deny that the last few emotional minutes of the original sell the movie for me. The silent, emotional impact of Delambre coming to terms with what he's become is genuinely heartbreaking and gives the entirely of the remake a run for it's money... Of course, I say all this like I had any intention of ever drawing Brundlefly. Preference or no, I'm not drawing that Cronenbergian horror, it's just not happening!
