no.4: The Blob - The Blob (1958)
The Blob has always been interesting thing to me. I distinctly remember as a child being bizarrely fascinated by it, despite having never seen the film. I really can't say why, I guess the notion of a movie about just a red slime that eats people was enthralling to my child mind because it was just so cut and dry. Nothing else to it, just a blob. The title gives the entire film away - maybe it was my love of Nickelodeon slime/Gak at the time that got my attention?
In any case, I do feel that the Blob is another quintessential in classic horror. Now while I do prefer the 80's remake of this movie, the original is the epitome of old monster horror - Some hokey thing coming in and threatening humanity, only being stopped at the eleventh hour and treated as if it's something that could actually happen. It's pure cheese and holds the same feeling as alien invader films from the 50's I talked about before. I guess that's why I liked it? Just that that alone could suffice for a horror movie back then. It was a simpler time, maybe not necessarily better but... simpler!
