I'd imagine the Esperanzan response to that would run something like, "Yes, yes, we're aware there are going to be edge cases the current rules don't cover adequately. We will fail on such cases, find out that we have failed, and change the rules accordingly so we do not fail more than once. That is what we call progress."

I would be amused if their solution for someone who's too loud with complaining is to kick them...upstairs. As in, put them in charge of the thing they're complaining about, at least for a while. "You think you can do better? TRY IT. See how tough it really is." (After psychological evaluation to ensure this won't actually backfire horribly.)

It's two separate steps.
Returning Rora to her regular self can be done using Kitsugi's serum.
Altering her DNA to something different requires Azulian technology.

Makes sense.
The body must be a pinacle of health so it can endure the changes.
Sure it'll be an ass having to pass the puberty you fought your early life to avoid it but in the long run, you'll get the gender you always wanted.
And I think it's the healthiest approach, since you also gain time to adjust your birth gender until you're mature enough and decides if you really REALLY want the gender change.

edit: Ah nm, missed the 'mature' part of it. This requirement makes even less sense in the world of magitech esperanza than it does IRL. :-p

I'd say you're assuming too early since no ones holds ownership of the transfolk community dictating what to do or what to think since even among them have different opinions about such subject.
The mature part in question is not about psychological but biologically too since her body's too damaged and sickened by the artificial treatment she had previously, which also seems to need to be fully matured to engage the next step, since you need to pass puberty to be a fully formed male or female. So I'd say it'd be easier to manipulate a body that'll not further develop beyond its state than in a one that'll and their genome might corrupt in the long run.
Seems common sense to me.

Interesting. Something based on fetal resorption could "realistically" be constructed with tissue engineering.
The only difficult part would be the nerve connections and that can be handled with bionics.

If you go all out and have a recharge (feeding) station (which would be trivial with Dr. Javi's level of internal bionics expertise) you could even make swappable genitals.

And when they are already upgrading her, a functional wingspan so Rora can take to the skies.

If you haven't seen it, I recommend watching the music video "Evo-devo" on youtube. Presumably, an organism is already capable of growing body parts in all the wrong places, if the signals between genes are genetically or chemically messed with in a right way. In an already developed organism that can be achieved by injecting stem cells, which can presumably be produced from some of the patients tissues.
The whole genetic code thing is ungodly complex tho, and it seems like Esperanza haven't got it figured out yet.

Hey Dr. Javi. I'd recommend treading a bit carefully with this story. It feels like you're throwing false shade on current real world treatment options. I know Esperanza has magitek, but making someone go through puberty twice sucks. Just let them block the wrong puberty if you're going to make people wait. Blockers have been used for a long time, and Esperanza definitely has the healthcare to support the required health monitoring.

to be fair, puberty blockers are needed to prevent the irreversible changes of the wrong puberty, while with Esperanzan technology, those changes are not irreversible. A lot easier to find hope for the future through the pains of adolescence when it's not destroying your ability to fix yourself, and you're made fully aware of that.

I just don't see the point of having to go through a puberty you don't want. I know that current day treatments aren't perfect, but the comic seems to be saying that taking hrt is damaging to the person taking the hrt.

I can't speak for all trans and gender non conforming people. But I do feel like a lot folks would probably accept a couple of years of presenting as the wrong gender for a magical transition, but those years would be pretty hellish. Growing hair in places you don't like, changing body proportions in ways you don't like, smelling ways you don't like, etc. It just seems like it would be less effort for the medical staff to just let these folks use puberty blockers or hrt, instead of having to go through and do things like hair removal, and breast reduction, and bone reconstruction.

I dont think any shade is being thrown at current options. Her specific hrt treatment was messing her up. From what i gather on this page, she got bad hrt.

And i dont think hrt was a non option. But she was given a potentially much better future choice if she sacrifices for a few more years. Instead of doing something incompatible with the rewrite.

This art gave me vertigo, I'm impressed.

In terms of the irl implication, I have always been of the opinion that chemistry should not be locked behind learning the right words to say to meet a "dia-gnosis" criteria.  I've heard in some Asian countries like Japan that the substances are basically available by request, and that "body modification" is not something that is an unacceptable reason like in the West.

I see the current system in the West as predatory on those of us who have a fetish for Transformation (TF).  It's not the same thing as just "wanting to be a different sex" it's the process itself that is the fixation.  Since both groups are lumped together, it combines to make something where I can immediately recognize the distinct parts, but the way it "comes together" gives a near ultimate power to the "theRapist" ("expert who says") over the life of another individual.  The only guidance should really be in regard to safety of use, they should not be planning this stuff out on some schedule.  Pretty sure the only reason they plan so far in advance is financial, so they can add the future payments to their balance books.
