It's just another case of two nations separated by a common language. Maths is BrEng, Math is AmerEng, so sounds strange and a little grating to my ear, like "Will you come with?", "A 10% savings!", "fanny pack"... Or cars having fenders, blinkers, trunks, and hoods. But strange is good. I like the little differences in the way people speak. They're fun.
