Continuing to develop Mikhail, Jonah's father, and his backstory.
While still a young pup, Mikhail was an outcast for being seemingly unsociable and prone to violence. Often off on his own, he seemed like an easy target to Bohdan (pronounced /bo-k-d-ahn/), a bully who liked picking on weird and cowardly kids. However Bohdan got much more than he bargained for. Although initially timid, eventually Mikhail got pushed too far and his violent side came out, resulting in him viciously biting and scratching Bohdan's face, permanently scarring it. Rather than continue to pick on him, Bohdan gained a new found respect for the scrappy young fox, and the two teamed up to terrorize other kids instead. Mikhail became something of an enforcer, able to quickly run after kids that would try to get away. They would work as a team much in the spirit of Scut Farkus and Grover Dill as seen in a "Christmas Story", with Mikhail acting as Bohdan's "sidekick".
Bohdan was the closest thing Mikhail ever had to male companionship in his life, even though it was mostly a transactional arrangement to both survive in a rough and cruel environment, but also to satiate Bohan's and Mikhail's sadistic tendencies.
Mikhail grew to be generally mistrustful and even hateful of other males. Mikhail would eventually grow up to mostly be interested in pursuing females only, eschewing male companionship. Anyone foolhardy enough to "befriend" him soon found that he had no scruples trying to steal potential mates from under their noses. As such Mikhail eventually became untrustworthy and isolated. He did however also gain notoriety as a sleek and handsome bad boy with a certain practiced charm, qualities that likely allured Grace, who was raised in a strict and wholesome Christian home (We may eventually get some more background on Grace's childhood as well).
There is more to Mikhail and his character, but he will likely continue to remain largely vague and mysterious.
Mikhail is being given more backstory to help me write the next couple of chapters of the novel, to help me understand him better as a character and his underlying motivations, and to prepare for the inevitable point at which he abandons his son Jonah, in effect, setting the whole Novel in motion.
Yes the novel is planned to be continued, with new chapters in the works.
