The male in the picture here is wearing the colors of the blood raven chapter of marines. Created for the dawn of war videogame series the chapter is infamous for "aqquiring" relics from other chapters and claiming them as their own. Like the magpie, a bird known for its stealing of things.
The salamanders are another chapter of marines known for their masochistic fire branding rituals, thir onyx black skin, and deep red eyes. They favor fire based weaponry and are the most mindful of civilians of all the chapters.

As odd as it is (and as big of a whore as I am for this setting), I respectfully disagree with this. This opinion comes from bringing several new people into the game, as well as doing a lot of the TTRPGs for it.
The setting is some 25-odd years old, with an obscenely overwhelming amount of information, half of it contradictory to the other half thanks to the IP holder's ruling that all information is equally valid. It's a fun setting, no doubt, but unless you have a pressing reason for looking into it, I don't recommend it. It's simply too friggin complex for it's own good and it can be daunting to people who are learning about the universe. Additionally, the universe is incredibly dystopian and parts of it are overdone to the point they are just ridiculous....It seriously seems to be poking fun at itself sometimes.

I'm going to have to agree here if I get too interested in the world then that might mean I would want to play the miniature game. I definitely cant afford that and putting together and painting those figures would mean a lot less art from me as well.
