That sounds like what her reasoning is, yeah.

I feel kinda shitty admitting that I'm sort of that way, too—If I know I can't physically hurt someone who's insulting me in that manner, my next default reaction would be to prove them wrong out of spite, even if I know deep down it's playing right into their hands. And I think that's what she's doing; it's bear-poking as hell, but we'll see when we see.

ps: also things arent going his way for a long time, from the moment he met her. soo, he might be motivated enough.

Oh, I do believe and understand it pretty well.
Hell, I've done it myself, when classmates tried to pile their share of work on me in school projects, untill I quit bothering doing everything myself, while others take the credit.
Though, a world ending threat seem a tad bit different to throw a baby tantrum for literal YEARS.

Yeah, he has means to fuck with Luna, but I wouldn't read a story where all goes to shit, just cuz one overgrown baby didn't learn that he's not alone in the world and said world doesn't spin around him.

This is true, but nigel hasn't been portrayed as someone caring much about this at this point. Nor the type to kill himself over a grudge.

From everyone's point of views, everything revolves around themselves. you have to learn to care.

I can't see nigel giving a shit until he learns by betraying expectations at least once. he won't become a "hero" just because he is a knight now.

He'll try to fuck them over, and he'll learn that in fact he cares, and find other reasons to not let the world die.

That's exactly the reason Luna made him blind.
It may be cruel, but without sight (given we've been given hints that he has supernatural abilities for alternate sight), he can see further than himself and finally gain a new perspective, which will mean a much needed growth and character development.

As much as i agree , they had years to solve this before Nigel reached this point.

i know that for the story purpose Nigel had to "have it tough" and "be left for himself" wich shaped him into what he is now. but it raises all sorts of questions as for how much the godess (and the parents, and basically anyone) cares beyond his uses.

and now she tries to fix an attitude that exists partly because of her ? (main culprits are the parents of course (97%))

To be honest, i'd check how many fingers i have after shaking her hand.

it gives me a big Olympian god vibe and not in a good way.

Eh, I had that discussion before and still hold my point.
Luna is a Tree of LIFE, life is never fair, nor does it really cares for those who live, after they're born.
Motto of Life - "Survival of the fittest".
Nothing is owed or freely given, everything is EARNED.
Nigel was raised to expect things and never been shown another way, but he didn't even want to use his own head for once, aside from spewing hate and spite all around himself for years, blaming everyone he sees, not ever trying to look around him and heed to the first thing Luna told him when they've met: "Look into your heart and see if you really want to be Knight. There are other things too."
She told him pretty much from the very start to think for himself and decide if becoming a Knight trully what he desires.

Given that Luna is "pro-free-will", it's the best guidance as Life could give.
And she tried to guide his parents to fix the mistake they've made, she mentioned that they've met not just once over the years and even talked, but he never listened.

What MORE does a Life has do to, so a healthy, seemigly sane, person would see the error in his way of living and fix it?
Well, if he chose to be blind to anything she told him untill the last moment, where she was left with no choice but to force his growth - she might as well to make his blindness a reality, in order to make him look inside.

The little guy literally went back from the selection and said

"oh boy, its not this time , but the tree told me i could do it next year if i introspected enough i'm so excited" and he did try for a while for the results we know.

she promised everything would be fine if he held on, well, this was too much for a kid that age, as expected. so in his eyes, she lied.

Was he wrong to hate the people that so obviously abandonned him and stay spiteful of it ? I personally doubt it.

Besides, her future sight makes almost impossible for anyone to have free will for obvious reasons. (if you are destined to something, are you really free of your actions?

Thing is he isn't sane nor healthy, look at him, and at his brother. he isn't right in his head and his body shows.

Nor she met with his parent about that part on particular, just into "stop grooming your descendants into guardians" as a tradition. she didn't even know he was kicked / ran off their houses for days when they met the second time.

I mean, thats good for us the readers and the story as a whole. but i completely understand Nigel point of view on this matter.

we are only arguing on the characters actions, not the writing (at least i am)

He has a right to despise his parents, and yet he chose not to hate them as much as he does Luna.
He doesn't even know they're already dead, cuz he closed his mid from anything else but hate towards Tree of Life and self-pity.

She could've gave him more, if he listened and ASKED for it, but instead he pushed her and everyone who dared to offer him help, cuz it wasn't what he wanted, he didn't want help, he wanted everything to be back as he was used to, to everything be given to him.

Luna once said that she doesn't see the future, she sees possibilities.
Nobody can trully see the future, cuz it has a lot of possible branches, one more prominent than other.

If you've seen Avengers: War of Infinity, you might remember how Dr. Strange "looked into the future", but instead one possible outcome, he saw only 1 in a billion that they could win.

Lune sees variable branches, and probably one of them had possibility that leaving Nigel to his own devices, would lead to him finally seeing what he should have.

Remember also that Luna said - she had no other choice left but to force this blindness on him, or else there will be no salvation.

She've let him live his life as he chose to, up untill the moment she could no longer afford it.

Yes, we've never been shown the conversation between parents and Luna, nor how many times Nigel and Luna actually met, but through their discussion, it was hinted that Nigel spent enough time around Luna and others for them to meet, and even chat briefly, only for him to push others away.

Do I really blame him? Not really, I blame his parents most of all, but he sure should have accountability for how he lived his life to this point.
He had plenty of time to rethink the way it goes, but no, he chose to stay blind and push any helping hand away, until none were left to offer.

And yeah, I'm not argueing about the character writing, I ever so curious of how this whole debacle will turn out.
What makes me most confused is how many people relate and protect Nigel's broken world view, saying that he's OWED something, that he should be given the post of Knight indeffinetly, regardless of his personality and drive, that he's the only right and "sane" person around, while Luna is most vile and toxic creature.

Nobody in this story is ideal, Luna is sure as hell detached from basic mortals, being devine creature that brough rebirth to Life on this planet (which was hinted to be a post-apocaliptic Earth) hecking 3 times in a row!!!
As if she'd care to cater to each and every spoiled, whiny child on Earth.

She's not bad, nor is she inheritly good and virtuous, and it's been shown that when pushed into a corner, she may as well show her thorns.
But so are all other characters.
And that's what makes this story brilliant, it drives conversations!

What makes me most confused is how many people relate and protect Nigel's broken world view, saying that he's OWED something, that he should be given the post of Knight indeffinetly, regardless of his personality and drive, that he's the only right and "sane" person around, while Luna is most vile and toxic creature.

i think it's because he's one of the characters that is the most relatable in a sense? he has a fall from grace that feels like an injustice and the autor really really nailed the point home.

basically he's so well made you can't help but be like "idk what happens, but if anything happen to my blue sweetie, i'll kill everyone then myself" vibe.

Oh he's so wrong, but its kind of understandable why, and somehow i can't help but root for him, and since the tree is the "main villain" of his personal arc, i can't help to see her unfavorably when she interacts with him.

however i'm not one to think he is OWED anything, just that he needs a win in the long losing streak his life has been till now.

And even when he gets what he wanted, he's loosing.

I can't relate to him, cuz my father always expected impossible from me, openly showed his displeasure towards me, and mother taught me early, through kindness and care, that there's nothing in life without a price.
I got a better life now, far away from my father, thanks to my mother's efforts, but for the rest, I've worked myself.
It might be not a best life, but it is my own.

The feeling I get from the most of commenters is - highly spoiled overgrown brats with not a single hardship or true obstacle surpassed through their own will and merit, nor any self-inflicted error reflected upon in their entire lives.
And that is very sad.

I can understand the feeling of injustice from Nigel's life, but once again, he had tons of opportunities to turn it around, yet didn't. So far.

Given Zummeng said that Nigel's pretty much a MC of the story and "best boi" in her own eyes, I can't wait to see him actually grow into a better person.
Actually, I'm eager to see them all reflect on their past lives and grow to be the heroes this world needs and deserves.

Maybe, but it's more like these people personally relate to him.
Some going so far as waging ouright war and hatred on Luna, as if she've done something to the reasers themselves.
There's plenty of comments like that on FA.

I really want to see Nigel turn to be the hero he's destined to become, not to burn everything and everyone around him out of spite.

Even though I can see why others think the ToL would be evil, I think she's responding in such a way for a reason, same as with his eyesight being gone for the time being. I think she realizes she doesn't have much time left before she's overtaken, so she wants to clear up any loose ends as best she can beforehand.

The tree wants hom for something, he's apparently so vital that she knighted him so they're not likely to hurt him.

Thank you. The media literacy of many of the commenters is so underdeveloped. It is like they have never read a story with a prophecy, much less a story where at least one person is working with incomplete information.

People, Nigel’s family were a bunch of privileged shits who put the clout gained from siring heroes over genuine love or care. Nigel, a by-product of this, was concerned mostly with making his parents proud. If you’re mad that Nigel keeps getting dealt a bad hand, it is due largely to his shallow, clout-chasing family, not the Tree Lady with future sight who obviously sees something we don’t.

Simple stuff.
