EDIT: I made a mistake with Tasli's caption and had to change it digitally. :P
Seems the boys are on the roof of Gene and Tasli's apartment. I wonder what they see up there...
TASLI (pointing at something): "There it is---see it?"
MUBBA: "Oh! It's a fairy hair!"
GENE (reading from his phone): "Mr. Know It All says it's a gossamer: 'a fine, filmy cobweb seen on grass or bushes or floating in the air, especially in autumn'"
TASLI: "Fairies don't exist, and it's summertime! Anyway, we're like a thousand feet in the air!"
GENE: "Our building's only three levels, including the basement"
TASLI: "But what's it attached to---we're higher than everything around! And how can a little spider make so much silk, or fly through the air!?"
GENE: "Heh! Must be some spider"
MUBBA: "Terrific; radiant she must be!"
TASLI (to self): "I just want things to make sense"
Ok, so I actually drew this cartoon with a pencil I found on the ground. ^^
I was walking home, and found a pencil in the mud. I brought it home, cleaned it, and ...thought to draw with it. :P
It's a new pencil, advertising some sort of local talent search. It's a cheaply made pencil, composed of (what I'm guessing is) some sort of recycled plastic. The pencil is not made of wood, hence the pencil is very flexible, almost like a gag pencil.
The graphite is no better. Oh, it erases well, but it's very light, almost like a #3 pencil. This is a consequence of having a high amount of clay or some other compound mixed with the graphite to reduce production costs and/or to make the lead more flexible (the lead did NOT snap or crackle when I bent the pencil ...and, yes, I've bent it many times just fiddling with it).
I think I'll stick to drawing with vintage pencils. :p
Well, the featured 'Spanner' pencil is the discount version, produced by Writer Aid Co (a company that doesn't seem to've ever existed).
The reverse side of the pencil says 'Thumb Behind Mark', instructing you how to hold it (the 'marks' are actually notches embedded into the pencil barrel).
The marks honestly aren't that useful (to me), but at least this pencil's made of wood. :3
I remember a story called "Whinin' Boy Blues" (a song title) that has a police department using mechanical spiders to spy on criminals, each one watched over by a person. One set of spiders is sent to a drug dealer who is terrified of spiders, and he smashes the ones he finds. One escapes and hides, then the controller sees the drug dealer pull out a gun. He then prevents worse by having his spider jump and land on the man's head, causing him to panic.

Ah, too late to see the unedited version with the error :o (Wow, now I know how the people who collect stamps feel about their vintage stamps with printing errors. Never imagined your drawings would cause such emotions, eh, Chippy? ;) )
Pencil. Ah, yes the "bendy pencils" as I called them. Look pretty kewl, but they are not as pleasant to use as the usual kind (at least for me).

Tasli's original caption was a bit convoluted, so I had to clarify it (he went on about the distances between things---it was kinda weird, esp. for a comic that's not all that funny to start with lol). He's effectively saying the same thing here, but with much fewer words. ^_^
Well, the pencil is now in the box with the other rejects, where it will remain for many years/until the Lord calls me home. :3

GENE: You know WHY leaves fall of trees in the autumn? They don't, they JUMP before the squirrels can get 'em!
MUBBA: Woooow...
TASLI: I won't say anything I won't say anything...
GENE: It's true, just look what happens to the acorns! It's so bad that some trees don't even HAVE leaves, like power poles. They're actually specially bred by the state.
MUBBA: Cool!
GENEL|: Their seedlings are were toothpicks come from.
TASLI: OH COME ON!

Obviously what Tasli fails to realize is that Mubba is correct, as he always is about anything magical, and fairies most definitely exist. No doubt it has come to have fun during the time of the great poppling. Maybe to help get it ready with her magic! And by the look of it, someone else has transformed or is busy turning into a popple and their tail got seen! Maybe it was the way Mimi gets to be in the comic, since she was feeling left out, her new popple tail accidently got in the picture as she attempted to secretly sneak around and spy on what Gene.. I mean.. the boys are doing.
At least Mubba is "humble" about not being believed. But does not change the fact the fairies are real! And Tasli's ears look very close being popple-y in the last image. ^^

I has occurred to me to draw Gene and Co as popples (in the same way I drew them as 'CalArts' characters), though great care would need be taken (I'm not that confident yet).

Well the fun of a silly popple transformation type thing is that it doesn't have to happen all at once. Could just grow a tail, or the ears, or the puffy muzzle, for some reason can't stop saying puh-puh before certain words at first. The fun antics of them trying to hide any features they have, Gene unable to hide anything from the water pet who loves the curious new developing features being a critter from the same era, Mubba knowing it all, but no one believes him, and so on. I think their look would slowly evolve out with this approach, since it's a little at a time.
As for looks, the best way *at least to me* is you use their natural color features to match to popple tummy fur and such, and the only part that is kept, when fully changed, is their hairstyle if they have one, which helps figure out who each one is. Size can vary quite greatly with popples, so that's a silly fun thing to mess around with too. Tiny hand sized popple? Really big one? It all works with them ^^
Anyway, it's all just silly fun in my mind, and I love to share the imagination. As all these newly appearing popples in the Gene world just seem to fit with such a crazy silly idea!

It's been proven that spiders can float in the air up to 3 MILES high and for HUNDREDS of miles before finding a nice place to lay down roots and eat tasty bugs. Also just curious how come you didn't include a spider based pencil. I KNOW you have one! ;D But this one is cool and I like the flexible pencil though I too don't think I'd use it for much.
Also considering spiders, they do a number of unusual things...a NUMBER of unusual things...especially on drugs!!! :
