From the sounds of things, the people weren't going to be happy with whatever the Tree chose anyway, so why not shake things up a bit? I imagine the people still won't respect them, and that's fine too, all they really need is the respect of each other to get the job done. Sometimes the ones you least suspect end up being the best choices since they have nothing else to lose but the most to gain.
