This was the first time they had gone out together to stop crime and save people. He wanted so much to make her proud. After all that training he had done with her, he was eager to prove himself to be capable enough to be by her side as a sidekick in fighting crime. It was a cheesy fantasy he used to have when he was younger, reading all those comic books tossed aside in the orphanage, but he actually had a chance to live it out now that his adopted mother was a vigilante herself.
They had gotten wind of an underground black market of young girls of various species being traded for labor, servants, or worse. They had been trailing these kitnappers for days until they learned of a waystation apartment they would hold prospective candidates in before moving them further underground, where they’d never be seen again. Things were going smoothly when they crashed through the window and stormed the small group of four hyenas. Max’s job was to take out the lone gunner while Murana took care of the rest. It didn’t go to plan.
Max felt like crying. This was the first time since he was adopted that he felt ashamed for his actions. He had made Murana upset with him, all because he didn’t listen to her or follow the plan - thinking he knew best. She claimed he didn't take this seriously, but he did take this seriously. He knew it wasn’t a game, that it was real life, and that was what made it worse. He felt she couldn’t trust him with something this serious ever again. Was he even cut out to be like she was?
