Seems like she's starting an incantation.

I've always wondered why incantations are said in rhyme.  I'm sure there's a reason but, for the life of me, I can't figure it out.

One of my late aunties was into that stuff...that and voodoo.
Back when I was about age 7, I asked her about the rhymes one day. She told me saying incantations in rhyme gives a flowing rhythm for the spirits and ancestors to work with.

Okay.  Well, that makes sense.  Did your aunt tell you why most spells are written/spoken in Latin?  I ask because Latin is a relatively recent language and magic has been around since humans could speak full-sentence languages instead of one or two words.

I don't recall her ever using Latin. I remembered her using either English or Swahili.

Wow!  That's quite a range in languages.  While English is spoken in several African countries, Swahili is rarely spoken outside of eastern Africa.

It is pretty common in rural parts of east African countries.

Yeah.  I remember reading somewhere that Swahili was developed to help people who spoke different languages understand each other.  Oh, BTW, I've used Swahili words to give some of my characters their family names, especially characters whose ancestors are African animals.  Of course, I also use Zulu and other African languages for some of them as well.

Yea Zulu...That's pretty common in South Africa, and is also spoken in parts of Zambia and Zimbabwe.

MviluUatusun

Well, that's better than another place she could pull them out of.

No Tower, no Ten of Swords either.  Death would scare the crap outta the boys even if very rarely actually means death.
MviluUatusun

That's true.  I'm not into tarot or anything like it but, death basically means the end of something.  Basically, when you pick a fruit off a tree that's the death of the fruit because it's no longer alive.
AnOldRat

Yep.  The end of a cycle, the end of a friendship, end of a chapter in one's life.  Once the person getting the reading hears the meaning of the card they usually know what it is that is coming to an end for them.

And HOLY CRAP ANOTHER page I somehow missed! DAMN!

She really IS good with her cards. She's so bubbly you might forget how competent she is! I hope the Star Wife doesn't take that away from her as she's being trained.

She's had them since she was quite young, so she's had lots of time to practice. Among the witches she came across as a sweet novice, but with three teenaged non-magical boys she's like a sorceress. And no, the Starwife won't take anything away from her. Gabby is exactly what she's looking for in an apprentice.
