It all started with one picture...From it's not-so humble beginnings, I never thought I'd be looking back 15 years later upon what would have gone from a simple Top Ten challenge to a full fledged annual tradition; though I doubt I'd be surprised, all things considered. It was such a different world then. At that time I had just seen a few artists doing October challenges and after a good deal of contemplation I decided to throw my hat into the ring. It may have been too late to do it all month like everyone else, but I could at least finish out the last ten days of October and give my recently graduated and bored self something to do for my favorite time of the year. (Or at least keep me occupied up until I went to Halloween Horror Nights that year.)
So why Happy Noodle Boy?
Why, out of all the possible things I could have chosen to unintentionally kick start a tradition spanning well over a decade did I choose something as esoteric as a purposefully badly done comic within a comic that barely anyone knows? Because I was a stupid kid! Back in the day, I, like many other people in their teen ages, found shit like this hilarious! I was a weird cringey edge lord with a love of the macabre and an inexplicable obsession with a stick figure that shouted odd, foul non sequiturs. It was to the point that I would make my own Happy Noodle Boy comics without any sense of self awareness but I just want to crawl into a hole and die out of sheer embarrassment for what I once was! Of course at the time it made perfect sense to give this crude scribble a place of honor among my specially chosen Top Ten villains and miscreants for the Halloween affair, but looking back on it, it's something I wish I could undo.
But the past has passed and the past don't last. I can't change what I did back then and like it or not, this crude stick man began a proverbial legacy of my own that I may not still be doing to this day if it weren't for him. Honestly, I wasn't giving any real thought to what I was drawing that October in 2007 either. I was just drawing whatever came to mind for the occasion and all things considered, I've had some pretty cringe worthy editions throughout the years, it's nowhere near as bad as the time I added in the Minions from Despicable Me, never gonna live that one down... So it is, what it is! All things have to start somewhere and while this countdown is primarily meant to honor the first and second place winners from years prior, I can't really have a celebration of years passed without remembering where it all came from. Is this all just a trip down memory lane that only applies to me? Sure, but I hope I can at least give you something to laugh at and pictures to enjoy along the way!
