Behold! The only thing scarier then embarrassing yourself through personal retrospect; A DEAD MEME!
2010 was an interesting year. It was right off the heels of 2009, the one and only year I failed to produce a Halloween Countdown and while that's something I still regret to this day, it really was out of my control. With that being the case though, I was looking to up my game to make up for the previous year's loss, this would begin the era of themes. It's only natural, you can't keep something like this going for years without eventually resorting to more specific themes or at least ones outside of 'villains and general spookiness,' but what was I to do? I had already done a Top Ten and a full 31 day countdown and I still had plenty of time left before my choices started running thin.
Now at this time, a meme had been floating around the internet. A little chart with ten squares that said "Can You Guess My Favorite Character?" and you'd draw them into said squares; pretty self explanatory and I had already done one myself, but it got me thinking. What if I did one for villains? Thus, the 2010 chart countdown was born. (unfortunately a little too late into the month, so the chart was only stretched to 21 character, but cest la vie~) Was it much of a theme? No, but it was novel at the time, working off of the concept that it was a full picture that I would fill in bit by bit each day, something that really doesn't work after the entire picture is finished but it was fun at the time! So... how does any of that work into this infamous and dead meme like Weegee?
Well, I suppose since the chart countdown was born of a meme I felt it only natural that it go back to a meme in the end? I don't know, truthfully while I didn't make a countdown in 2009 I wasn't without ideas for it, one of them was the inclusion of Weegee due mostly in part to some inside jokes I had at the time. Adding him in as the winner the following year was just sort of my way of paying homage/getting it out of the way, even if the joke had mostly died by that time. Is it a cringe-worthy addition? Maybe, but certainly not the worst I've done and I'd be lying if I still don't find Weegee and other various YouTube Poop tropes to be hilarious. It's a bygone era of the internet that hits an oddly specific nostalgia bone for me and part of me misses it... but it's probably best left dead and buried!
