Out of Body Experience

Extortion! (with Shade Koopa)
set default image size: small | medium | wide
I've been screwing around with Midjourney so much that I almost forgot I could draw on my own! Naturally, Midjourney does it better... having the techniques of history's greatest painters and illustrators at your command, like some sort of right-brain Mega Man, is bound to give you a decisive advantage over ordinary meatbag artists.

However, there are some things Midjourney does not do well. Action verbs, for one. Tell MJ to make a character actually DO something, and the AI just stares at you with its soulless, mismatched eyes. Midjourney does an impeccable job of drawing celebrities, but ask it to draw that personality with a mustache, and it'll put a mustache under them, or perhaps turn them into a weird, humanoid mustache. Sometimes, Midjourney is extremely helpful in expressing ideas quickly, and even inspired in its decision making process, but sometimes it's painfully stupid, and entirely useless.

This is one of those instances where Midjourney simply could not do what was asked of it. Inspired by an early Simpsons episode, I asked MJ to draw Casper the friendly ghost rising up from the dead body of Richie Rich. The best it could do was a three eyed, vaguely Casperian ghost rising up out of nothing. (That's another thing Midjourney can't do... cute. If you want creepy, it's got you covered, but at the rate it's going, it won't replace babyfur artists any time soon. Or ever.)

Sometimes, when you want a job done right- or at least with some degree of coherence- you've got to do it yourself. And that's what I've done here. Sorry, advanced technology, but John Henry wins this round. (Then collapses dead from exhaustion.)

By the way, Harvey characters are deceptively simple, but are full of subtle contours that make them surprisingly tough to properly replicate. Sure, you can "draw" Casper, but it's going to take some time and practice to do it right.

In summation: Hey, art-bots! Up! Yours!

I'm pretty sure the only way we'll have a program running on a computer that can make art as well as a human artist is to emulate a brain scan of an actual human artist.

feels weird knowing casper was born as a ghost from ghost parents

That IS weird. Evidently Amblin conveniently ignored that detail in the Casper movie from the 1990s.

I actually watched a vid about it fairly recently, apparently the original creators were pretty pissed about it, but they didn't have the rights anymore at that point so I'm fairly sure Amblin didn't care.

I remember that episode, it makes so much sense for him to be the ghost of Richie Rich too. I wonder if Conan wrote that joke, seems like the kind he'd do. Personally though, I do think AI art programs are going to become an amazing tool for artists to get rough concepts or even very detailed ones as a baseline for their art, and if someone was insane enough to feed one a pile of babyfur art it would probably be able to make some that would be hard to pick out from a lineup, just no one is doing that (yet).

I owe you ze response! That joke is weirdly existential for The Simpsons, feeling a bit more like something Groening would have done when it was a bit on The Tracy Ullman Show. Conan may have wrote it, though! Anything's possible!

Harvey cartoons have a certain... familiarity to them, don't they? You get very used to the same body type getting applied to numerous characters, from rich brats to witches to ghosts and demons. It's as bad as Akira Toriyama.

It's definitely one of those early Simpsons jokes that resides in my head forever, that's for sure. As soon as I saw the thumbnail I knew what it had to be a reference to, haha.

Oh well...He can't take all those riches with him.

As they say..."I've never seen a hearse pulling a U-Haul trailer".

Yep. They can put it in the coffin with you, but that's just gonna invite tomb robbers.

It happened to the great pharaohs when the ancient Egyptians tried it 3,000 years ago.

So let me get this straight

Richie Rich is set before Casper The Friendly Ghost?

This is so going to make a lot of theories

In my fan-fics, Casper & Richie Rich are separate , distinct persons.
Also Casper has 2 legs.
