Flaws flaws flaws, that's what makes characters so interesting. Remember, Ian has 5 students. Each one is different, he never knows how they're going to react.

He's a sensitive one. But stay tuned for further developement.

sorry heh just Chucky looks like someone who cant take any form of criticism.. when he should take it and learn from it to improve.

I understand Ian but it's good for him to be more of a teacher then a friend and told him flatly because if it was a passenger plane then it could kill people.

So I hope he learns from this and not lash out again Ian who is doing his job.
Chucky
12 years, 4 months ago
Professional criticism is new for him, and he's emotional as hell. So yes, he's got some learning to do.

Somewhere down the line Chucky's gonna realize Ian just saved his life and
the lives of many many others. And a good teacher knows you absolutely CAN NOT
pull punches when lives are and will be at stake.  Also Ian was quite patient and
truthful with Chucky. That too is the sign of a good teacher.
It doesn't make it any less painful for Chucky at the moment unfortunately.

Nice job on showing Chucky doing the slow burn down to where he cracks. His facial expression shifts really nicely from panel to panel.

Thanks, I had a lot of fun drawing that.

20ft before the runway is big in aviation... now if here were two feet, they probably would've let him slide.
Chucky
12 years, 4 months ago
Actually, any feet before the runway is big.

poor guy.  Why is that fox such a bastard to him?
quasiskunk
12 years, 4 months ago
Because...if it was, say, 30 feet short of the runway, they likely woulda have been killed. Being a flight instructor means you have to follow the book, and the rules laid out by the FAA, and his school (which are likely stricter). Ian is not doing or being mean towards Chucky; he's being perfectly firm and doing his job.

If you were taking a driver's test, and you pranged the curb "only once", do you think the instructor wouldn't notice?
Chucky

Ian is sort of reacting to Chucky's reaction. He expected Chucky to react more professional than emotional.

My compliments, again, on having a feel for real characters; everyone reacted perfectly realistically.

On the one hand, I do feel for Chucky.  On the other hand, he has to learn one way or another.  Better to learn now than when it really counts.

Gotta take the good with the bad Chucky. Yeah, it suck hearing you didn't do so well, but he is being "matter of fact" about it.
I'm sure Chucky and Ian will recover from this.
Nicely done!

Yanno, I'm really liking this series! Its drawn well, and shows the emotions and scenes very realistically. Doesn't hurt that this Skunkie is on his way to Oshkosh tomorrow either ^.^

I was there then too! Been going there for almost 25 years now. Staying with a bunch of other furry plane fans.

Taking off is the easy part, landing is much harder.

A tough and slow trainer can take it but guess what happens when you do that with a 747?

Wheels break off and you skid down the runway on the belly igniting any fuel still on the plane.

It also crushes the cargo compartment and likely ignites the contents as friction tears away the belly and acts like a fire starting flint for about 30 seconds.

A British Airways crew did it with a Boeing 777 a while back.

Chucky's gotta learn lessons. Sometimes the hard way. He's lucky he has a teacher that is willing to teach and be hard when needed.
Chucky
12 years, 4 months ago
Yeah, it's just such a new experience for him. Chucky is going from a coddled teaching world to a professional teaching world.

That's one of the big differences between Air Force pilot training and civilian pilot training. If you had acted like that on the Air Force side, you'd have been called into your commanders office, at attention, and yelled at for a good 15 minutes about the meaning of professionalism.
Chucky
12 years, 4 months ago
I can certainly see that being the case. Of course, you'd expect more professionalism from someone in their early 20s as well. Just like Ian, I instructed at the college level, so most of my students were in their teens, 20, or 21 years old at most. I never knew what I was going to get.

Dang...I can kind of feel how he feels, given my own trials and tribulations back in college.  This one's gonna get to him for a little bit, but I do hope that he feels better soon.

Quite a page, that's for sure.  Thanks for the share.

interesting. I gotta say good work on the expressions. Poor Chucky. Maybe he will get it next time.

Chucky looks devastated but as folks have already said, the character was expecting a lot and the landing going right at the end must have been an ego boost. He perhaps even forgot his earlier mistake for a little while. Still, I'd have to side with Ian on that, its best to learn those lessons now rather than later.

I figure being the kind, informal sort of guy that he seems to be, Ian probably wishes he could have said it more positively, along the lines of something like "everyone stumbles at first, you got one good landing today, next time make it two and you'll be ready to solo in no time."

Still, he had to be truthful, and being serious about it probably sticks with Chucky better than being dismissive of mistakes. Nonetheless, a lot of good interaction and logic behind the character actions. Enjoying the read.

Well said. Chucky's reaction and attitude set Ian off a little.

LOL. Ian is certainly that person.
MooseJam

Ian could've put the good with the bad so the lesson doesn't seem like total fail.
Chucky

Chucky didn't give him a chance.
MooseJam

Looking at Ian's dialog, it was mostly about the negative things.  He didn't say what he did good then what he did bad.
Chucky
12 years, 4 months ago
Ian has a bit of learning to do too.
MooseJam

They both do and hopefully soon so they both become better at what they're doing.

I get that Ian was being professional and promoting safety in aviation but both the approach and the lesson could have told and done better to make sure future pilots of any emotional wavelength would keep cool and focus while flying. In my opinion both Ian and Chucky have a long way to go for maturely in their careers.

I have a really hard time sympathizing with him here, he fucked up, he'll learn, and he'll get better, it was his first run.
Lemur

Well Chucky should have seen it coming. Is a fox after all. They like to butter you up, make you feel confident, then stab you right in the face. :P

On a serious note, bad landing could cost lives.

I see a lot of "Poor Chucky" on this, but what about "Poor Ian"? I feel sorry for him because they were having such a good time in the plane.
MrCyberwolf

That's quite possibly what Ian is thinking in the ninth panel after run off.

Is this incident report Ian mentioned, about Chuckys' reaction or the botched landing a keen?

Still I feel sorry for both Chucky and Ian. Chucky for feeling that he has failed at his life's dream, which is more then enough to make anyone break down like that. And Ian for not being able to be both Chuckys' friend and teacher 'cause clearly he wants to be.

Though I assume it's 'cause Ian is fairly new to being a teacher, he has to go with the good first, Then mention the bad and make sure both stick.
I really hope Chucky and Ian can patch things up, and both come out of this for the better.

Either way this was a very emotional page, great work ^_^
Chucky
12 years, 4 months ago
Thanks. The incident report will be for the off-runway landing. Ian fucked up royally by actually letting that happen. As for the exchange between Chucky and Ian, that is between student and instructor.

And yes, your assumptions about Ian are correct. He is new, and only a few years older than Chucky, he's learning this as he goes.
