Johnny had informed the crew of the news about Lori and him. His feelings were bittersweet. In the last week since Lori had told him she was pregnant; his head was complete shambles. He had barely slept at all, and to top his bad luck, there were ton of creatures that demanded too much druidic power for him to handle. He was exhausted and emotionally drained. He wasn’t sure how much could he resist, though there were more bad news coming their way.
“After quite a lot of research”, one of his friends commented, an expert in dimensions. “I’ve concluded that Lori is too embedded in the fabric of this dimension. There’s no way she can survive outside of this place. And even if she does, she would be changed entirely. She would probably become a dimensional horror. Her fate is sealed.”
Johnny was devastated. Lori was trapped here, forever. His head twirled endlessly, a sensation of vertigo that drowned him in sorrow.
“What about his cub?” The leader asked his teammate as he noticed Johnny was overwhelmed by the news.
“His cub has half of his essence. They can exit safely. At least, if they’re sheltered from the ether, but it wouldn’t be problematic as we have our vessel.”
“Johnny.” The leader addressed him. “Would you like to take your child back home?”
Johnny was dizzy, but he could nod his answer. “I’d have to talk with Lori first, though.”
“Go, meanwhile we’ll plan our next steps. How long should we stay for them to be born?”
“Uhhh, I guess three more months.” He managed to say as he went stumbling down the path to look for Lori. She gazed at his love, concerned of his wellbeing. She knew he didn’t have good news to share. They retreated under a tree, a few hundred meters away of the crew. She could see the gloom in his eyes, as he was retaining his tears. He had to be strong. For her. For his unborn child.
They sat down for a few minutes. Johnny was bringing himself up, to try to explain all the situation. Lori wasn’t a dumb girl, and she knew something was happening to her home. Johnny had shared some details about them, but didn’t tell her everything, as he didn’t want to overwhelm her with information. He held her very tightly, almost in tears as he tried to clear his throat.
“You know… you know I… I really… really love you, right?” His voice creaked. Lori comforted him laying her head on his shoulder.
“I love you too, Johnny.” She was happy to hear him utter those words. However, she knew there was something wrong going on.
“There’s something you need to know. About this place. I’m not sure if you’re aware. We’re just regular guys… we live in this same planet but in the future. And… we know this place… is… well… doomed. We didn’t want to scare you before. But I think you’ve noticed this place… has changed. I know it may seem unbelievable.”
She nodded. She felt this place had a gloomy atmosphere. Something huge was coming its way. Something was imminent even if she didn’t know what was exactly. Something dreadful and menacing. And even if she didn’t feel the oppressing atmosphere, she trusted Johnny.
“In a few days, our god will announce he’s bored, and that he will unleash some creatures to make lives more interesting.” He made more pauses than usual. He wanted to make sure what he said was exactly what he meant. “Though, his monsters are too powerful for most of the people. Almost everyone will be dead in a few months. They… throw beams stronger than most heroes could ever resist. If you’re hit… you basically disappear from existence.”
Lori grabbed his hand and continued rubbing his back. It was hard for her to hear such a descriptive apocalypse, but it was also difficult for him to stutter his words. “It will eventually end in three months or so, but the damage would be done. Our god will create angels that can counteract these godlike beasts, but almost the entire population of our home will be annihilated.”
He took a deep breath. “The problem is, this place is bound to repeat itself, year after year, for all eternity. All its dwellers will reappear again, and relive it, without even being aware of this event repeating all over again.”
He hadn’t told her yet, but she knew by his somber tone this concerned directly. “So, I’ll forget about you?”
Johnny gulped, trying to ease the knot he had on his throat. “Yes.” He remained silent for a minute as he ordered his words in his head. “I talked to my friends, and they say you can’t return with us.” He broke down and cried, shedding a few tears. Lori comforted him, though her expression was desolated. “I wish I could save you.”
The silence became overbearing. Lori finally broke the ice. “What about our child?”
Johnny calmed down. “They can leave… but I don’t want to leave them without their mother… I love you too much for that.”
Lori hugged him very tightly as she composed herself. She had been crying too. “Johnny, you have to do the right thing. Even if it’s painful. It will be painful for me, but he’s your cub. He deserves a future.”
“But what about you? You deserve it too!” He said exasperated, as his tears flowed down his face. “You’re the best thing that happened to me, and now I can’t be with you!”
Lori was very sad, but even then, she never gave hope away. “Let’s not think about how much time we’ve got left. It’s better to enjoy our time together, as little as that may seem. There’s still time for something amazing to happen, so we can be a family.”
“I hope that is true.” Johnny embraced Lori, as they wept together. Only time would tell if their relationship was meant to last.
