A little preview of the next episode, showing Mazz and Brina as young kids. Shamelessly recycled from a drawing I made a long time ago as part of Inktober.
As you may know, my new comic is about a Christian Tapir in love with an Atheist Possum.
It’s a comic about attraction between polar opposites. Though both characters will express their points of view, it will never be an “A is right and B is wrong” kind of deal. It’s about how these two find things in common despite their differences. And though both main characters will experience an arc and end up changed, neither of them will ever convert the other, that would be lame.
It’s about getting along and even having fun with someone who thinks differently. About finding middle ground and sharing with someone who doesn’t necessarily agree with you. I think that’s something this world is lacking recently.
Where does Brina, the comic come from? Mostly from my own life, as is my regular comic Futurepig, with situations and characters changed and fictionalized. The characters are all based on real people, however, they are not one specific person, but composites of many.
I made Brina a few years ago and posted it here just as “Possum girl”. That original drawing was done during a real situation when someone was “playing possum” with me by not answering my messages. Later I fleshed out the character as a rebellious girl into rock music. Brina contains a little of my two mothers (biological and adoptive) and bits of other female relatives.
Mazz is a Brazilian Tapir. His character was created as the opposite of Brina, being timid, shy, and very religious. Mazz is not based on me, I have never been particularly religious, but many of the situations he goes through are based on my own life experiences. I grew up being a nerd and a geek in an era where that made you a target of mockery and bullying. I was often seen as if I was a member of some weird cult. I have had friends and relatives who were religious and I worked at a Christian magazine for a while, so I have a few interesting stories.
Here I gave Mazz white spots as young Tapirs have in real life.
