Page 29: Crucible.

… Which brought the WRONG kind of attention.

Writer’s note: Fun Fact: Ursa carries an genuine Ulfberht. It was passed down from her great, great, great Grandfather Hjorvarth Briarthorne. A Viking era sword that is the first example of crucible steels, what we now call high carbon steel. By placing charcoal into a crucible at the start of the smelting process it increases the carbon content significantly. With the proper quenching it makes the steel incredibly resilient, strong, and flexible. A process we still use today.

Carbon.  Always excellent for making strength.  Proper carbon bonds are how Life was built.

this scene… I drafted a thing where Calvin, Cubbi and Buddi are trained by traveling swordsmaster ...and part of their training was making their own sword (yes like in last air blender)

and after he comes back Ursa is... not happy. in large part over Buddi being trained by a human and not Barbics…
and forces him into a duel...  and tries to kill him after realizing he is or could become better then her.

it climzes with him countering her harderst stike.. and her sword getting cut in half.

(and him ending up using the of it pices to kill her)

Oh my... that's a bit more violent of an angle than i would go but it's interesting.
I too am trying to keep things more grounded and accurate like Last Airbender. I do admire how they really tried to capture the correctness of the fighting styles.

that was one version, another one was even more violent with Ursa and ex princess Callie becoming femanist 'rebels' and stealing from merchants... and Ursa becoming more and more violent and hate drieven.

and Calvin, Cubbi and Buddi being the only ones to stop them.

at least Callie has the sense to surrender after Calvin bests her, but at that point Ura is basically an axe murderer, and yes Buddi does kill her.
---
a third version just has Ura cheat in their duel and gets exiled for it.
