Do You Like Woodrow Raccoon Better With or Without Glasses by moyomongoose
+3

I thought I'd see how Woodrow Raccoon looks wearing a 20th Century Fedora. After all, the time era this drawing is depicted is in the year 1960, and fedora hats were still in style as masculine attire back then.

Fedora hats were common attire with business suits in the first half of the 20th Century.
Fedoras were worn by business professionals and politicians and other guys wearing a suit.
They were seen worn by characters in those old gangster movies, and in series like The Untouchables.
Characters in the old Superman series of the 1950s often were seen wearing a fedora.
The father character in the TV series, Leave it to Beaver, Ward Cleaver, often wore a fedora.

I feel like the round wire frame glasses and the fedora give Woodrow Raccoon an earnest, solemn appearance.

What is you opinion on Woodrow Raccoon wearing a fedora?

Fedoras and similar hats were the norm with men until the mid 60s, the early James Bond films had Connery wearing them, an early gag was him throwing it on the hat stand.
And then the Indiana Jones films and it with the Untouchables being hardcore 1930s a man was almost naked without his hat!

How true that was.
Some character roles played by actors like Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney also wore them.
They even portrayed Dick Tracy as always wearing a fedora.
The cartoon character, Fearless Fosdick, would either be wearing a fedora or a bowler.
There were lots of characters in the movie, It's a Wonderful Life, who wore fedoras.

Some of the inspiration for Woodrow's round wire frame glasses came from images I've seen of former president Harry S. Trueman.

I love Bogie in Casablanca!
But yeah, it was normal, I guess you saw it too a degree? I noticed Al doesn't, so he is of the generation that started too stop wearing them. Hell, I'm a solid guy and hold the heat in, so a hat just makes me overheat!
Not that  I don't think a fedora is a cool hat!

Yeah, now you say it, he does resemble him in a way.

That would be about right for Al.

In the story, Al Coyote is age 28. Johnny Ferret and Poindexter Fox are also around Al's age.
Most of the other scientists are around 50, 60 and 70.

Al and Marge had Jed when they were age 18, the same year they were married (1950).

Cut, it's rare that such things work out, but when they do, it's the stuff of sappy movies!

I'd say Jed came into the world not long after, say 7 months or so?

As far as Bogart movies go, my favorite two are The African Queen, and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

I remember one other movie, The Desperate Hours. Humphrey Bogart plays the role of a fugitive who takes a family hostage in their own home.
The thing that stood out most in that movie was every time the father made failed attempts to escape with his family to safety, the fugitive would always tell him, "I can hear the cogwheels going around inside your head. They go clickety click, Pops...Clickety click".
I remember that line well from that movie..."Clickety click, Pops. Clickety click".

The earliest character I remember wearing a fedora wasn't a man, but a woman named Carmen Sandiego.  The trademark pose on the computer game covers showed the fedora pulled downward a little to partially hide her face while one or both of her hands were in her trenchcoat pockets.  From the description you gave, Carmen must've been one pretty tough and masculine crimeboss, despite being a woman.  I just recently watched the Adventures of Superman on H&I http://www.handitv.com/shows/adventures-of-superman and just about half the characters were wearing hats, including Clark Kent.

Carmen Sandiego's hat is similar to a fedora. Though the big brim makes it more like a Panama style hat.
