For all the world, my version of Crusty looks like a dog ...but the character is a cat (some of my watchers used to think Gene was a fox ...some watchers probably still do, so I guess my superpower is turning cats into canines). =^..^=
That said, I can't draw to start with, but I'm gonna blame my reference for this one (yeah, yeah---the bad artist blames his reference, but c'mon!): https://sta.sh/021yeaon2999 :p
N-E-Way...
Crusty is from *Showbiz Pizza's 'Pizza Time Theater', circa 1977. Crusty would be soon replaced by Mr. Munch: some kind of purple monster thing. ^^
*Showbiz Pizza became known as 'Chuck E, Cheese's Pizza' in 1990.
Have I ever experienced PTT firsthand? ...Nope!
That said, I've had food from CEC a few times.
The first time was with my S/O around 2017 or so. Our visit was spontaneous---I noticed a CEC from the road, and suggested we go in for giggles---I expected we'd be asked to leave, but we were accommodated ...we were also the only visible patrons. :p
More recently, I thought to try getting CEC delivered. This was shortly after third-party food delivery became a thing in my area---I was making the most of it by seeing what kinds of food I could get delivered. CEC had third-party delivery, so I thought I'd give them another try. I ordered a pizza pack online. My phone rang soon after: the CEC was out of the vegetables needed for my pizza. I was taken aback by this, given I'd placed my order just after they'd opened (but whatever). They had SOME vegetables, so after a bit of conversation, I got a half-this-half-that pizza ...which may be seen here (my mother took a slice before I could get my camera lol): https://sta.sh/01fxmlfr28bm
The last time I ordered from CEC was to buy one of their sandwiches ...which according to the call I received after placing my order, CEC didn't make anymore (despite their online menu saying otherwise). I didn't want to buy pizza, so I settled on wings (which were ok). :p
TL;DR: I gave CEC a chance, but I don't care for their food. ^^
Pencil...
The featured pencil was a Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza ticket prize somebody won in *1987 ...and that I bought in 2021. ^^
*the featured pencil reads 'Chuck E Cheese', but is in reference to the character, not the pizza chain.
That's all I know about it. ^^
Pizza Time Theater was still going in 1987. I decided to check it out via YouTube ...and it was certainly a thing (link tested 10/17/2021): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zamkcNV4dv8
Yeah, this animatronic show is very likely what inspired Five Nights at Freddy's. Granted, I don't find it creepy in the slightest. In fact, I'm amused by it---also astounded PTT was able to get the rights to cover so many pop songs (that were more or less contemporary with the shows).
...Speaking of, Pasqually's cover of 'Footloose' got me laughing IRL (it starts around the 12:50 mark on the above video's timestamp).
The way you describe CEC's service makes them sound rather dodgy. I think I've just lost a little respect for them, even though I've never even bothered to have an opinion about them up 'til now. Was the pizza any good at least?

It ...wasn't terrible---it was a bit like an upper-end frozen pizza.
The CEC here is in a little, partially hidden area I could walk to, but couldn't tell you how to GET to (if that makes sense). I doubt they know much in the way of business.

ya'know the marketing for this company is very ironic ... Crusty? As in Pizza Crust? But you know crusty can also mean cruddy and dirty. And then the mouse mascots ... like mice and rats are almost synonymous to the average person ... do you really want rats associated ... with your Pizza establishment ... :p
I've got this image of tables full of crumbs and crustiness built up, and rats running around on the floor trying to pick up pizza scraps amongst the refuse while kids run around not noticing the gross factor.
It's just unintentionally hilarious. Like I get this vague sense that CEC is actually kind of a crumby establishment for some reason. I feel similarly about McDonalds. They just seem kinda trashy. Do you think that is accurate?

lol The character apparently played baseball. Unsure what that had to do with singing covers of pop songs, but, then, I'm not in the executive, creative-decision business. :3

Welp at least they don't have a creepy clown as their mascot along with all his uncanny valley companions. Seriously though even as a kid there was something slightly creepy about the hamburgler the weird purple guy and all that antropomorphized food. shudders.

Well I'll give them this, their new incarnation of Chuck E. is certainly cuter and more appealing than the previous incarnation. There is nothing cuter than a bashful furry boy, but personally I really don't care for bird girls, blarg. What an earworm. I'm sure there are plenty of parents pulling their hair out on this one when their kid plays it on repeat. Harmless random stupidity I suppose. Didn't know they now had a cast of other characters. Don't really care for any of them other than the mouse.
