no.15: Reptile

As generic as it is, reptile was one of the hardest prompts for me to think of something for and was one of the last entries that I drew. This is because there really are just so many things that 'reptile' lends itself to. Technically I already did a snake, so that's out. A dragon would just be kinda boring unless done right. I played around with the idea of a kobold for awhile, it's something I've wanted to make before but it would just be another pear shaped short stack and this countdown has enough of them as is. For 'reptile' I wanted something bigger, imposing, literally giant, something I hadn't done yet! Then my love of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland hit me; what if I did the Jabberwock? It's reptilian enough and is certainly more unique! Of course that was easier said then done, I still had the whole process of designing something based off of John Sir Tenniel's illustrations that was still my own and yet also appealing. I also wanted to steer away from American McGee's incarnation which I realized I tread dangerously close to once I chose a steampunk theme, but I was determined to keep it and in the end I made something I enjoy!

As for the character herself, I wanted to make something that actually gave more of an intimidating air. I've only danced around that up until now, with characters far more on the innocent side. With the Jabberwock, I wanted the air of some aristocrat who derives pleasure from things like pitting people to fight to the death or simply luring them in to be eaten. However, she also fancies games of chance and good entertainment, so you may just be spared if you can best her or keep her entertained for long enough... maybe. Steampunk seemed a very fitting theme for Wonderland, it's quirky and doesn't make a lot of sense but functions despite it. I also made her openly inflatable because what's steampunk without a dirigible?
