From a moral stand point. But what about from a commander's?

Commanders like soldiers that follow orders, but remember that the soldier in the WWII concentration camps were just "following orders" as well

A good soldier not follows orders blindly. A good soldier fights for his country with honor. He knows when it is time not to raise the blade. To see who is wrong or right. In that case a good soldier kills that guy who just attacked the general, because one-eye is a corrupt asshole.

Nicely written. Sadly, basic training is put into place to strip away any sense of "right and wrong" and only to obey orders. (At least thats what I got out of it.

Might be. But those strong in mind know how to hide common sense. We saw that with One stripe. He is really a good soldier and a skilled one aswell. He knew when not to raise his blades against his 'comerades'. He knew he would be outnumbered and then there would be no help for the mousegirl at all.

Uh oh, that might not end well.. ;)
poor general.

Poor bastards blindly following orders is how the really bad guys stay in power.

If only folks could simply "ignore those in charge" and follow their moral compass. But basic training is designed to remove that moral compass.

and if basic military training alone doesn't do it yet, the sort of political indoctrination that comes with it in a highly militarized society certainly is supposed to.

Honor, duty, "for the king" - all things meant to make u blind and deaf to the screams of your heart.

In the midst of a battle one must often follow commands blindly. Simply because there isn't enough time for questioning them. or even discussing them. It's a different thing though on the command to go into the battle in the first place. Or kill those bunch of innocent civilians dangerous terrorists.

depends on the desired outcome

Indeed. And who that outcome is intended for.

As you've done so often in this work, you've asked a (pardon the pun) pointed question, giving great definition to your characters and depth to your story. It truly deserves the label of "epic," in the classic sense of the term.

I try to think like the characters to some level. Why they are doing or saying something, ect... Glad to see that you approve of the story and its "realism".

a good soldier follows a the right orders for the right reason.  If this guy is a good soldier he just killed Kohi, not the REAL general who actually deserves respect.

But if he refuses to follow an order because he believes its wrong, he would be punished. (At least, thats what soldiers have been taught.) It isn't up to him if the orders are right or wrong, he just carries them out.
Nicely written.
