Birch concludes his concert, and reconciles with his father.

Posting this chapter is so satisfying for me. I am a sucker for father/son reconciliations.

I was wondering...In your stories, what time era (approximately what year) was depicted when Draper join the air force, and what time era was he promoted to colonel?

Good question. The time line shifts, since time goes slower in the story than in real life. At this point, I would say he joined the Air Force around 1970, and was promoted to Colonel around 1995.

I had given thought to that because after my story is completed where 8 year old Clarence Coyote is finally able to return to the year 2018 that he came from in the time machine, I plan to write occasional follow up postludes about the characters in 1960 that Clarence had become acquainted with.
One of the cubs Clarence had become friends with while in 1960 was Ryan Lynx.
Ten years later in 1970, Ryan Lynx had already unlisted in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. Upon obtaining the rank of Sargent, Ryan Lynx is assigned as a gunner with a B-52 bomber crew on bombing missions over Hanoi.

By the way...In the story, the time machine was built in 1970 for the Air Force.  And was built by the same scientists who repaired the machine in 1960 so Clarence can return home. Plans were begun on the machine in the mid 1950s.

Ah, so, you needed research. Got it.

I had thought that Draper and Ryan may have met a time or two while in the Air Force.

Hey, it's your story. Maybe!

I take it that Draper began his military career as a lieutenant graduating from OCS being he eventually acquired the rank of colonel (commissioned officer rank).

Have you ever depicted where and what duty station Draper was first assigned to after graduating OCS?

No, I did not.

Though it would be some time yet, being there would be quite a bit of follow up postludes leading up to 1970, or possibly 1972, after the actual story is concluded.

What I had planned was a couple brief encounters, like the one below for example;
It is a time that Draper is already a Captain O-3. And Ryan Lynx had recently been promoted from Senior Airman E-4 to Staff Sergent E-5.
An Airman E-2 walks by with his uniform unkempt, paws in his pockets, and his hat not properly worn (not squared away).
Captain Draper notices that Staff Sargent Ryan Lynx fails to address the issue with the Airman.
Captain draper calls Ryan Lynx over.
"Morning, Sir", Staff Sergent Ryan Lynx salutes Captain Draper.
"Morning, Staff Sergent", Captain Draper returns salute.
Captain Draper then asks Staff Sergent Ryan Lynx, "Staff Sergent. Didn't you notice that airman over there not squared away?"
"I guess I never gave it any thought, Sir", Ryan Lynx replies.
"You're an NCO. You have a responsibility to address that", Draper reminds Ryan.
"Yes Sir. I'll tend to it now", Ryan Lynx assures Draper, then salutes as he is dismissed.
Staff Sergent Ryan Lynx then approaches the airman admonishing him, "Hey, Airman. Is that any way to wear the uniform of the United States Air Force?"
"Uh, I guess not", the airman timidly replies.
"I guess not too. You get that straightened up right now", Staff Sergent Ryan Lynx orders the airman.
After the airman gets himself straightened up, Captain Draper tells Staff Sergent Ryan Lynx, "Thank you, Staff Sergent. That's more like it".

This is great and seeing the part in my head where Birch’s dad stood up and sprinted with cane in hand with a little limp going up on stage to hug him. That is how to say I love you.
