Yeah, I've seen this with a lot of artists.  A few of whom are friends, like nerdmouse.  We all keep telling him how awesome his art is, but he just seems to hate it.

I've seen that in some artists too, they even go so far as to say the drawing they just uploaded is a fail in some way or another. Yet I'll look at it and see nothing wrong with it.

I can relate.

Quite accurate.
Now Out Host simply must draw the Artist Mentality: Comparative Talent Insecurity Complex Scale. You know: "Man, my art sucks because it doesn't look exactly like (insert uber-popular furry artist name here). I suck. I'm no good. etc. etc."
Bahlam

That is so freaking true.  :-P

This is why I'm not an artist. I tried drawing for a while, knew "actual skill" was at the low end like on the left, but saw "this sux" like on the right, mostly because I was comparing the amount of effort I put in to it with the works of popular furry artists.

Now I still consider myself a furry author despite not having finished a story in more than a year. So it goes.

I'd be in the middle, with a sort of...  'meh'.

I'm tempted to draw that now

Ooooohhh boy... this is soooooo true Looq... I've stopped counting the artist who say they draw like broomhandle but in reality they're really fantastic... *smile* I think it prove and old proverb that say that we are our worst critics... and I have to admit that sometime I fall... in the same trap

Yeah, I'm usually the guy on the right. At least according to my friends.

This is your best work yet! It's a masterpiece! 8D
... yeah, I'd have to agree with this picture.
Although for my own work, it usually seems to be that the "skill level" is replaced with "percentage of picture complete"... =P

I see this with so many artists... of course, I'm a bit of the opposite.  I always bitch and moan about how my drawing sucks, but I actually suck at drawing.  XP

CapraKID

lol where does that put me? I know my art can always improve. once you're satisfied with your art, you'll no longer strive to get better. however, I agree that some people are too over critical of their own work, and some others should admit that they need improvement.

every artist need a little bit of both, methinks :3

Hmm this I can related to as well. Im just happy others enjoy my work. But I hate being lazy in such. heh..
Prav
12 years, 6 months ago
Lol, artists who are happy with being terrible will stay that way, and those that want to get better because they don't like their art will strive to get better...
stinkinweasel

I honestly beleive it could stem from report built in evolving in art. When you first start, you're just so happy to get that art out of your system, you're exited to grow and learn and adore every bit of attention you receive. The more good you get and are told you are, the more you yourself feel an expectation from yourself and others.

It basically gets to the point that you feel like you could never top your previous work, so you spend more time looking at number of favs and comments rather than the enjoyment you got out of making that piece of art for yourself. At least that's how it seems to me with some artists.

You hit it straight home, my friend. I myself couldn't find a way to exactly explain the way I felt, but you... just hit it square in the face.

Quite honestly, I mean... I do have moments that I actually enjoy and/or feel proud of some of the outcomes I bring through my drawings, while other times I just sulk at myself feeling like my style isn't exactly up to par of what it should be.

Thank you for sharing<3

dude... this, so much... Back when I started drawing in 2007, that's exzactly how I felt XD "Look at what I create QWQ -shoves paper into mum's face-"
