I feel like walking into a room and pinning someone down to the ground with your mind and manipulating their senses into making them think someone else is there, even if they're quiet and harmless, is just highlighting why psychic types in government are dangerous and why if they want a political presence they need a dark type foil who can't be affected by these kinds of things.

Though on the outside perspective, the alien just waltzed in, knocked him out effortlessly, and left.. All around a disappointing fight for all the fans to see!

I knew it was just the 1 pokemon to battle against. though its a very cheap blow. along with being banned from the arena, Nidoking is a Poison type which is weak to Physic types by nature. so he honestly stood no chance against it even in a "fair" fight. Beyond that a mind duel has no show to it anyway. part of why the crowd is silent. exactally as ImaginaryVoice mentioned.

He beat a pseudo-legendary ground type Pokemon. I don't think typing would play much a role for TiNi considering that. He might have abnormally high stats in defense or special defense, or he might be extremely skilled in the ring, or both. However, this type of mental manipulation isn't something that can be protected against with a defense stat because it's a type of power that doesn't do 'harm' that causes loss of HP.

Pseudo-legendaries as part of their definition have a stat total of 600. Nidoking's is only 505; 495 for the first five generations. Which isn't to say Nidoking is lacking for strength (it's the mon of choice for RBY speedruns and has always been quite strong competitively for very good reason), but a pseudo-legendary it is not.
For reference, the current list of pseudo-legendaries are Dragonite, Tyranitar, Salamence, Metagross, Garchomp, Hydreigon, Goodra, Kommo-o and Dragapult.
Either way, like you said, large defensive abilities aren't going to do much when your opponent can (essentially) directly manipulate the electrical activity in your brain. TiNi was never going to win this. And it's easy to see why there's so much fear and mistrust surrounding psychic types in this universe.

Eh? Psuedo Legendary Ground-Type?? He ain't no Garchomp! (I mean sure, he narrowly beat one thanks to his Rivalry ability, but whateves)
With Nidoking's low Sp. Defence stats, that mind fuckery was going to beat him no matter what. But I suppose his fans thought he was invincible! [MEANT TO BE A REPLY, MY MISTAKE.]

This comic does a good job of illustrating exactly why psychics/telekinetics need to be handled very delicately when writing fiction. They can potentially completely break the world open if not carefully checked and it can become difficult to create compelling conflict when those sorts of powers are in play.
I really enjoy the dynamic of it becoming a potential class conflict, especially when the psychics are willing to show up to demonstrate exactly why a counter to their power is needed. If they'll show up to flex their dominance and disdain in this context, it shows the world exactly why they need to be kept in check.
If TiNi didn't have quite an ego, I would almost guess this was exactly part of his gambit.

Hmm... considering his Zoroark friend, I wonder if we'll see a rematch with Zen in TiNi's place. Assuming dark types are indeed completely immune to this kind of thing as well as normal psychic attacks. Or if Zen will end up tutoring TiNi on how to resist it.

Someone mentioned it above but I did get a gaslighting vibe right there, or at least something similar to it. And I don't mean that in any sort of throwing words out my ass way either. The whole encounter gave me that vibe and I was curious. The whole "You're just fucking with me!" "Am I? How silly. You must be imagining things." sorta thing is classic gaslighting for a reason, like shown in an earlier page in the comic during this actually once the Gothorita appeared. "Where'd that come from?!" "They were always here, you just aren't remembering properly.") Especially with how the Beheeyem basically stopped right then and there and let TiNi sit there to wonder wtf just happened as he walks away completely unscathed. That sort of stuff do mess with your head and psyche. And the fact that because it all more than likely happened mentally with not a lot of finesse to it it probably looked very bland and dull to the audience, hence the whispers probs, as you can't really know what's going on unless you're a mind reader yourself maybe (It's an interesting perspective to think about, how we wouldn't have been able to hear (Or I suppose "read") all that had we just been an outsider looking in like the crowd is rn.)
Now I'm wondering about what else TiNi will have to deal with after that. He seems to have more or less lost, if that can be considered a match, only without the crowd roaring for anyone. Are those whispers the crowd? Or are they all in his head? We won't know until the next page or so I bet, but it's certainly a dilemma to see witness. The dude talked shit, could've proven that Beheeyem wrong had he the willpower to resist, and got owned in what is probably only not even 5 minutes in.
