This car will be featured in the next part of my story, Clarence Coyote and Project Courier.
The setting is in Torrance County, New Mexico in August of 1960. This Mercury was a 3 year old car at the time. Skip Raccoon frequently has use of this car. Skip Raccoon had graduated from Torrance County High School in class of 1960 that year, along with others who graduated in 1960 which are: Sophia Raccoon (Skip's girl friend) Danny Otter (aka Hot Rod Danny...He has a Studebaker Golden Hawk that could go 140 mph), Lidia Otter (Danny's girl friend. high school cheer leader), Biff Colindale Pitbull (a school bully. Spent first half of summer of 1960 in jail with his brother Richie and a friend Gaston for pulling the school fire alarm a few days prior to graduation day), Sandra Johnson Pitbull (Biff's girl friend...graduated class of 1960 in Bernalillo County), *Larry Cougar (captain of the high school football team), *Daffinee Cougar (Larry Cougar's girl friend. high school cheer leader), Gerald Jenkins Coyote (star player on the high school football team. Got a job with the state highway maintenance department after graduation), Cindy Jones Coyote (Married to Gerald that summer...graduated class of 1960 in Guadalupe County), Guss Bear (on the high school football team), Marsha Bear (Guss' girl friend), Colton Fox Jan Fox (Colton's girl friend) Sonny Collie Freddy Ozmond Skunk (aka Hot Rod Freddy...He has a Ford Model A hopped up as a hot rod) Heather Kendal Skunk (Freddy's girlfriend) Mavis Husky Vera Husky (Mavis' girl friend...graduated class of 1960 in Valencia County), Johnny Fox (aka Hot Rod Johnny. He has a 1957 high performance Chevy), Angela Fox (Johnny Fox's girl friend), Samuel Donaldson Ferret (aka Hot Rod Sammy. He has a 1930s roadster hopped up as a hot rod), Beth Lewis Ferret (Samuel Ferret's girl friend). *Leslie Rabbit (borderline mentally challenged, though he has many friends among his fellow students). And there are several others not named in this posting who also graduated in class of 1960. * Larry and Daffinee Cougar were king and queen of the class of 1960 senior prom.
While still in high school, Skip Raccoon was also on the high school football team along with Gerald Coyote, Guss Bear, Larry Cougar and various other fellow students. Their high school football team is known as The Bears.
Skip has sported that greaser pompadour hairstyle as far back as his sophomore year in high school (10th grade), which was during the 1957 - 1958 school year.
Typical of a high school jock, Skip doesn't believe in taking any wise crap off of anyone. In fact, while still in school Skip Raccoon, along with Guss Bear, Gerald Coyote, Larry Cougar, and a few other of the more resilient seniors, had at times defended those students who were vulnerable from being bullied by Biff, Richie and Gaston...Skip Raccoon is not scared of Biff, and Skip never did like Biff and that bunch who hangs out with him. Skip is bit wild, and also despises being made a fool of or being called a liar...
Several good ways for any animal to get in a fight with Skip Raccoon are to, but not limited to; 1. Call him a liar. 2. Set him up to look like a fool. 3. Mess with his girl friend, Sophia...Skip will defend Sophia's honor. 4. Assaulting those who are vulnerable and defenseless...*And God help the one who Skip catches taunting someone who is mentally challenged. 5. And talking bad about and gossipping about his family...That one's a cardinal no-no. *Leslie Rabbit also graduated in Estancia class of 1960. Though Leslie Rabbit is borderline mentally challenged with an IQ of 78, Biff, Richie and Gaston didn't dare bother Leslie the whole time he was going through high school. That was because Biff, Richie and Gaston feared what Skip, Guss, Gerald and Larry would do to them if they did.
Keeping promises is something Skip takes earnestly. Though Skip will readily admit when ever he's wrong about something, Skip doesn't like eating his words when it comes to things he has committed to do, or things he refused to do.
Quite often, Skip and Sophia go out on dates, and whether that '57 Mercury has seen a few "back seat memories", who even knows? They would go to places like; The Hop, The Comet Drive-in or The Fort Union Drive-in Theater among other place of their interests. Not long after graduating high school, Skip Raccoon got in on an apprenticeship with a machine shop in Albuquerque. There is a good future with that job, and Skip has saved up quite a bit of money from that job during the summer, in which Skip hopes to buy his own car. If Skip can get his own set-a-wheels, he wouldn't have to be asking Daddy for the keys all the time.
Sophia Raccoon turned age 18 on April 17th, 1960. Skip Raccoon turned age 18 on May 10th, 1960.
