I feel so bad for him

Directing his anger at the wrong target, but as a kid his age I can't really blame him...

I would not fully say wrong target... she was likely the one who made his parents become guardians in the first place, wasn't she?

I'm betting they let the power go to their heads, so while she did appoint them as guardians, they're at fault for losing sight

And then....she congratulates him for getting out from under his parents "wings"..as she knew he had to. lol, that's what I'm thinking. :P

Is he being cast out or is the parent reaching out for him to stop?

Definitely looks like he's being cast out. They already threw him away emotionally, why not make it official?

the parents: oh right! we were suppose to blindly disown you because we are the fucking worst! thanks for peacing out son, never wanna see you again!

And not once did he see the real problem right before his eyes. But he was young, and blind by his own anger and directing it at the wrong person.

I can only assume he never thought to answer the question given to him...

he was comin to that answer, he wasn't angry or upset when the T.O.L turned him down, he was still in high spirits. It wasn't until his parents acted the way they did, that things changed. He is still a child and like most children, he needs his parents for that support but he got the exact opposite and he correctly and incorrectly blames the T.O.L for that

Damn i feel so sorry for him. I'm surprised that no one has lectured the kid's parents

Those parents don't seem dumb,  just selfish, greedy, and prideful. They'll have probably kept that mostly behind closed doors to avoid public scorn.

I understand where he's coming from, but the tree is not the source of his problems, merely a factor. one would have hoped she'd notice behavior like his parents'.

I don't really blame the tree of life for how he ended up. As I see it; she showed him the fake emotional love his parents were giving him, thus exposing that he was only raised to become a guardian merely for the prestige of his family. He's only being driven on blind rage and wanting to take his perceived revenge on what he deems to be the source of his family's scorn: The Tree of Life.

Thus I perceive he's going to do something rash; very very rash :/

misplaced anger... instead of blaming the tree should have focused on how vapid egolatric his parents were.

I feel like I know the outcome from this...grows up - evil ruler - revenge on not only the tree of life but on his disowned family (likely murder them all in cold blood first). That's my theory.

Looks like he found out the reason why he wanted to be a guardian.  And if his parents were worth more than a little $#!* it might have meant something.  Unfortunate.  This means that *she* is going to become the designated target of this kid's anger, mostly because he didn't have any other appropriate target.

Hopefully she'll take some responsibility now!

She only thought he just needed another year.  He just wasn't ready at that time.  He just needed to be what some places call 'redshirted.'  To train for one more year, answer that question of her's right, and he's in.  In like Flynn.  He didn't fail he just needed more time.  It was his shit parents who did this to him.  All the responsibility is on the parents. They're the ones who cast him out.  They're the ones who abandoned him as a 'failure.'  They're the ones who 'sent him west,' as Gunslingers call it.

I could just hear Rowland say, "Poor child did remember the face of his father.  His father, however, forgotten the face of his.  The child could've passed the trial and yet he was Sent West anyway.  And for that, I grieve.  And damn, do I grieve."

Unfortunately, the poor goddess will be getting *all the blame.*

You can feel Nigel's rage and sadness quite potently here. The sheer contrast with the color scheme further exemplifies his emotional state along with the use of shading.
