This will be the first in a series of easter themed art featuring my rabbit OCs. First up is our gender non conforming poster boy Kyaw Bits.
Here we have Kyaw Bits wearing a brand new easter dress and easter bonnet. Sven Bobs is dressed handsomely and colorfully for the season as well in a bowtie and vest.
The idea for this piece came together kind of spontaneously at the last minute. Initially I had the idea that Kyaw would probably wear a fancy dress for easter and I pictured some kind of simple bonnet as well (taking some inspiration from the "Easter Parade" song which I've referenced in the title). My initial concept was thinking of Kyaw going to the beach with his cousin Naw (girl) who would be wearing a one-piece bathing suit. Beaches aren't particularly eastery though, but a kind of casual dress and bonnet seemed very fitting. I started to sketch out the outfit as shown here. This was only meant to be practice. But I quickly decided to put Kyaw in a swing and then had the idea of Sven pushing Kyaw. I think this is both a very fitting and nice piece for the Bits&Bobs series, and it also captures the easter feeling I was going for very nicely, complete with fancy colorful clothing.
Both boys are having a nice time as you can see. Why is Sven not sweating bullets like usual? I had initially considered Kyaw in a dress and Sven in a suit looking nervous and embarassed being with Kyaw, however last minute I thought it be nice to show them both smiling. The reason? Right now both are tucked away in a nice secluded garden with no one to judge them. So at last Sven can relax and just enjoy himself. Personally he is probably indifferent to Kyaw's "crossdressing" tendencies. He just loves Kyaw regardless even if it's not for him. But when he's around others he is acutely aware of how taboo and trangressive it is and he becomes extremely uncomfortable. This is a rare moment where we can see what their friendship is like when there is no judgment.
I really like the way this turned out. I pretty much got Kyaw right on the first go. Sven proved a little more troublesome, perhaps because I haven't drawn him in a while, but I think this version of him is still quite nice. He's got some boyish charm here.
In (1) we have the full color version. I think this mostly turned out alright. I had always imagined it as a blue dress. I briefly considered pink or lavender however, since Kyaw here already has those colors in their design (at least here) I felt that would be redundant. So stuck with blue. I like the way Svens outfit turned out. Definitely could pass for the Easter Roo, was a little unsure about the tie color but oh well. Decided to leave the background uncolored so as not to make it too busy and have the characters pop out (which is what I mainly care about). (2) is the inked version, and (3) is the original pencil sketch.
One day I may finally get around to writing some stories about Kyaw&Sven, they have an interesting dynamic that's slightly different than Jonah&Jonathan. Hope to explore it eventually.
