So, two things that might be unexpected:

I drew Rudolph ...in February.

The Rudolph I drew isn't the Goodtimes version.

To explain the first, I have this very vintage Rudolph pencil that I simply couldn't contain until Christmas. I mean, look at it (cute ever so)! :D

As for the second observation, I ...kinda wanted to write a bit about a different Rudolph, specifically the 'Lessons for Life' (LfL) version (which my card here is referencing).

Before I get into the LfL Rudolph, let's look at this pencil.

I really cannot date this, but it seems fairly old---probably from at least the 1960's.

Closer look: https://sta.sh/01aj7mwurvmd

The pencil reads, "Rudolph ~ The Red-nosed Reindeer RLM"

The 'RLM' is for 'Robert Lewis May', the creator of Rudolph. ^^

It's a nice, shiny-blue pencil (possibly of cedar wood), topped with a hard (yet brittle!) Rudolph. The topper is very glossy (I'd say its gloss is equal to if not better than new Lego).

I did not use this pencil to draw---It's presently unsharpened and I desire to keep it that way. :3

Now, on to 'Rudoplh's Lessons for Life' :p

See it here (link tested 02/17/2021): https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6aobcs

LfL is an animated special (possibly DtV) adapted from the book of the same title by Joie Scott-Poster and Ted Kay.

Basically, the special is a well-drawn but only acceptably animated forthright telling of the classic Rudolph story: no English arctic foxes with Bronx accents, or cutesy elves using dentistry as a queer metaphor---it's just the song in story form ...and told to us in rhyme. :P

Now, what gives character to this special is after the story concludes, it repeats ...only the second time around, it's interrupted with 'lessons' from some live-action lady posing as our storyteller.
The storyteller is shown reading the Rudolph story to some children, whom she asks story-related questions to, such as,

"In the story, Rudolph was teased out of the soccer game. How would that make you feel?", and "Why work as a team?" (in regards to Rudolph helping pull the sleigh). That kind of thing.

The answers given by the kids don't seem scripted, but we may not be getting their first takes. ^^

Either way, it's unnecessary to show and tell the story twice. It'd be best to show the story once and follow with the lessons ...not that these lessons are needed, really, but I'm not opposed (it's interesting to see the Rudolph story used for social education).

Anyway, my interest was in the character designs ...I know this is subjective, but the LfL reindeer characters are among the best I've seen---my pencil cannot do justice to them.

That said, my Rudolph was drawn from an animation still. It's not an original pose---I did this to see how 'on-model' I could draw the character (best not to get too creative with one's first try) ...and this was my first try. In fact, with the exception of the head sphere and the curve representing light from Rudolph's nose, this cartoon was otherwise entirely freehanded. ^^

Don't feel bad.  The drawing is good.  The video is also on YouTube in 2 parts, for those who want to download it but can't from Dailymotion.

And, I recently ordered one of the rare JC Penney Rudolph costumes from 1998, yes, in February.

I had one years ago, along with a life-size plush.  Both gone now.
Getting another of the same fursuit.

As you may already know ... I'm a bit of a Rudolph afionado. Its nice hear someone else knows about this obscure version of Rudolph. Its one of the few Rudolph video media I do not own. You can't get it on DVD and it only exists of VHS which is why I don't own it. I'd have to either get a VHS player or I'd want to find a way to convert to digital to preserve it. Thats obviously a project for another day. So far I own 5 Rudolph movies and am missing LfL (as you dubbed it) and what I call Rudolph 1948 (a short cartoon based on the original poem).

I could say more about LfL but not now. Don't have time. Maybe later.

Hey, you know I like to dabble in obscure stuff. Still, I opted not to buy that Rudolph Saves the Sprites book---it just didn't seem worth it, albeit, I'm determined to find a way to review it.

I have a VCR, but I've no idea if it still works. :P

still don't know about the books ... that is a much deeper rabbit hole than video media. Its a little confusing how many versions are out there and all the spin off tales as well. I probably would be very selective in that arena.

I just want to read it because it's a sequel (albeit, probably non-canon one) for my preferred Rudolph incarnation. ^^

So LfL ... in my humble opinion ... is basically ... the gayest Rudolph ever ... so of course I love it to pieces ^_^

It is just so sickeningly sweet, Rudolph is overly animated with cuteness and he has this nasally whiny way of delivering every single line. Its also very preachy and self indulgent (the pot calling the kettle black). I found it more likable than not ... its what I'd call cutely annoying & annoyingly cute. What that basically means is its so obnoxious it kind of goes full circle and becomes oddly charming as a result. Maybe part of the charm is it seems blissfully unaware of how campy it is (or it just doesn't care). This is the sort of weird thing you find at some friends house with very conservative parents but secretly find oddly enjoyable despite the fact that most boys would be making fun of it.

To be clear, I never got to see this as a kid, but knowing me I would have liked it because Id be crushing on LfL Rudolph but probably wouldn't want to admit it. I found it accidently on YouTube looking for Rudolph media. I don't think its for everyone. Its definitely gonna be cringe worthy or eye roll worthy for some. But eh, w/e, I still like it. I basically like all the versions of rudolph.

I didn't care for the animation (granted, the low quality of the upload likely makes it seem worse than it is), but (again) the character designs I found very appealing.
As a character, The Goodtimes Rudolph is my favorite. The Rankin-Bass version? I strongly dislike the specials and most everybody in them (inc. Rudolph). This is odd because I like everything else RB did! XD

RB Rudolph was really the only version I knew of as a kid. I really loved him. Easily my favorite christmas special by a long shot and probably my fave male character growing up. First of all being a "misfit" myself (or at least seeing myself that way) I really identified with him. He is very cute as a fawn. I liked his voice, i sympathized with his pain (especially having trouble making friends). i liked his relationship with Hermey. While we are at it I liked Hermey to a lesser extent as well. Its nice when they decide to be "independent together". I do like Clarices "theres always tomorrow" but I dont think i was super taken with her even as a kid. i was there mostly for Rudolph. She does have a nice voice though (as most females do). Though honestly I am not crazy about thinking of Rudolph having a girlfriend (for obvious reasons). I undoubtably found him handsome in his adult form. Lastly despite all the abuse he is never bitter or mean, mostly just sad, otherwise he is a nice thoughtful and easy going character who is easy to make friends with.

Anyway i probably cant actually explain why i liked this character i just did. We dont really chose what we like and dont like, so if you found him annoying/unlikable or w/e thats fine. It is what it is.

My gripe is mostly with the special. Sure, the lessons are good and the story isn't horrible ...but effectively everyone in the special is a jerk, even Mrs. Claus (seriously, how do you ruin Mrs. Claus!?) D:

Rudolph (IMHO) was overshadowed by the other characters. Bear in mind, too, that RB's Rudolph didn't end with that first special. There was also Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July, as well Rudolph's Shiny New Year (neither of which did Rudolph any favors). :P
Zivrshka
4 years, 2 months ago
I think I'd have to go with RB Rudolph as my favorite just for the nostalgia alone (i also think the clay model of rudolph is great but you probably wouldnt agree). Goodtimes Rudolph would probably come second. The sequels to Rudolph 1964 kinda take Rudolphs personality and ham it up a bit, but i still like it more than not. i think of the sequels my fave would be Rudolphs shiny new year. His interaction with Happy at the end is really sweet. His attempt to relate to him as a fellow misfit. (Happy is kinda cool). he's a little annoying and whiny in "Island of misfit toys". hes okay in Christmas in july but that plot is so over stuffed Rudolph kind of becomes a bit of a side focus (I do like his sad tear filled song when he loses his ability to glow). he doesnt have much of a personality in the 1948 version, and then there is LfL who is sickenly cute which in itself isnt a bad thing but he lacks the character depth of RB or goodtimes so I'd have to pick those first I think.

The New Year special had some good ideas in it---I like the concept of the islands, so long as one doesn't put too much thought into them. That said, Rudolph conveniently forgets he can fly in that special ...which irks me a bit (it's purely for plot).
The July special ...really hates Frosty. XD

Shiny New Year: yeah thats very annoying. theoretically being one of santas reindeer he should be able run worldwide circles around eon -_-;

Christmas in July: i can see what you mean but my problem is so much of the plot is focused on the ridiculous contrivance of frosty&fam not melting onyl for it to tie into rudolphs powers last minute. honestly what were they thinking.

oh boy ... speakin of christmas gaiety =^_^=

Ive seen this before but in a very odd context. One time when i went to ihop with friends and family they had one of those kid games where you need to find images in picture. It was these little white artic foxes all over the place of different sizes, hiding all over the place. had some fun looking for them because im really just a big kid when you get down to it. didnt know what it was in relation to and wasnt really curious. This seems to be sickenly cute but maybe even a little too far for my tastes. It looks like its intended for small children. is there even a plot?
IceAgeChippies
4 years, 2 months ago
The Christmas Arctic Fox special is one of those explanation stories, in this case giving an answer to why/how Santa is abe to fly around and enter homes undercover. :P

'Here Again' is among my favorite, recent (-ish) finds. I will say, however, that the songs range from horrible to unbearable (worse even than those from the Rugrats movies), but everything else is good! :D

And it seems my Rudolph description as offended someone,

"I get what your saying, but saying the elves wanted to be a dentist angle as queer I am truly offended by. I felt that could of been better worded and quiet honestly that is not nice to use that word"

Queer's just an umbrella term, isn't it? I know it's been used disparagingly, but so has 'gay'. XD
I don't believe I've said anything wrong. What's your take (I know you read this)?

Zivrshka
4 years, 2 months ago
um ... so the word "queer" has an interesting history. Originally it just meant anything strange, unusual, or outside the norm. You'll see it used that way in older writings. we will come back to this.

of course at some point it meant eccentric person and eventually homosexual in a disparaging sense. But as happens with most of these old derogatory terms the people it gets thrown at try to "reclaim it", with mixed success. Some embrace it in their community amd consider it empowering while others will say it shouldnt be used for any reason whatsoever (its the langauge of the enemy after all). It then becomes a word that has some controversy to it even within the community. One thing most agree on though is when its said amongst each other it will usually get a pass and when its said by an outsider it will be regarded with suspicion. This is similar to the phenomenon with the 'n' word. The words "faggot" and "queer" are a bit like this but for gay people. So for example getting shouted "faggot!" by a stranger in the streets is different than me playfully calling a guy im flirting with in a gay club "you silly faggot" in a playful way. You'll notice however the difference isnt just the change in speakers but also the tone and intention. First one is clearly an attack the second one meant endearingly. We will come back to this as well.

To complicate things further "queer" also took on an academic meaning by some lgbt activists. They needed a term that encompassed gay, lesbian, bi, and any other gender non-conforming groups. The term "queer" makes perfect sense since it originally means anything outside the norm. So anyone who isnt a cisgendered heterosexual strictly following the traditional gender norms would be considered "queer" in this non-judgemental academic sense. I use it as an umbrella term and dont find it particularly offensive (when no offense is intended. faggot on the other hand is a lot more offensive and even my playful attempts of its use could cause offense to some. Its a much more hurtful word for some reason.) so maybe you picked that up from me. The problem is, this academic use has always been controversal. Some use it, some find it offensive even within the community.

So bottom line is this ... this is a word that means a lot of different things to different people. Experiences may color the term as well. For me growing up no one was saying "queer" it was "you faggot" or thats "gay" (faggot still sounds mean but now i have a lot of positive feelings towards the word gay but thats just me. everyone is going to experience their own set of internal connotations).

So there is always a risk in offending someone when using these terms regardless of context.

(to be continued...)
Zivrshka
4 years, 2 months ago
So what is my take? Firstly I use queer as an umbrella term because it is both logical and its less cumbersome and less loaded with political history like lgbtqia+ and the like. The very fact that the acrynym has to keep being expanded tells you its not an adequate descriptor, but saying "everything other than straight and fitting the traditional gender expectation" is a perfect catch all that "queer" captures. Its also useful to me as a bisexual. If I wanna talk about all men who are interested in "sex with other men" (more academic jargon often abbreviated MSM), it is cumbersome to say gay&bisexual men. For me "queer men" includes all those men who feel outside their expected norm, and this would include any same sex attraction. So when I say queer men im often referring to all gay and bisexual men as a whole.

That being said I understand this academic usage is still offensive to some, so i would be careful who i use it with. Havent encountered too much trouble over it myself but I know its out there.

So i use it as an umbrella term but how do I feel about its general usage in any context? Well I am gonna break ranks with the PC crowd here. I dont believe words are inherently offensive. They mean what the speaker means and carry what intentions they intend. Ideally thats how words should be engaged with, in which case its not the word itself but how its used that matters. ive been around you long enough so that when you say its "queer coding" I know you arent saying it with any distain or judgement. In fact i agree with you, and think there is something kinda gay about hermey, and im certainly not the first to notice (in fact a lot of queer men seem to identify with this christmas special about "misfits" and see either rudolph or hermey or both as secretly gay characters, despite the fact that Rudolph has clarice as a love interest (this could be overlooked as Rudolph following social norms. Youll notice his attitude towards her is more friendly than romantic, anyway not to get sidetracked on headcannon silliness).

In an ideal world that would be the end of that but there are two fundamental problems with this ideal. (1) people form connotations with a word that are habits of the mind. when they hear a word, no matter how its intended its going to call up those associations. so if a word reads as hurtful to them they are just going to experience it as hurtful even if rationally they know its not meant that way. (2) No one can actually know what the speaker means or intends. there is always the danger that even if said "kindly" that secretly the speaker is using this as a way to express their disdain. For example a straight guy who is friends with a gay guy and walks up to him and says "hey faggot" to which the gay man politely says "can you not call me that?" to which the straight guy dismisively says "aw, come on, were friends. im just joking" then grabs and rubs his head in a patronizing fashion. hopefully this scenario makes it clear the straight man doesnt see the gay man as an equal but like an odd little brother. the gay man is picking up on this and feels belittled by the term faggot. however we cant really know, maybe the straight man feels friendly towards the gay man and doesnt see him as less and just considers this playful. theres plausible deniability. in light of this, some are just going to take a no nonsense approach and say "no straight man should be saying that tl a gay man no matter what".

so those are both legitimate and intractable problems that cant actually be solved. But heres the thing. the better you know someone the more likely you are to knkw there true intentions. So with you and me Im unlikely to take offense. However for a third party not only might they take offense for themselves but offense on behalf of those hypothetical people who might be offended.

(to be continued ... almost done)
Zivrshka
4 years, 2 months ago
This all gets rather tedious though, especially when little to no offense was intended. Theoretically almost everything is going to be offensive to someone somewhere so if we literally want to cause zero offense we have to spend an inordinate time apologizing for everything no matter what our initial intentions were. which is basically ultra-pc culture today.

welp ... time to break ranks again with a different view ...

Im not here to be "offended" by every off color comment ... its tedious and a literal waste of my own time. i dont immediately assume where the speaker is coming from, i have no interest in scaring people into silence. I want to know what people actually think. If they hate my guts and want to kill me in my sleep its far safer for me to know that then them to remain silent and plot behind my back. More than that though I want to knkw their reasons. One I understand where they are coming from, i can either see they are actually an ally or if they are an "enemy" then while i might personally be offended at the end of the day my "offense" is not a counter-argument. I want to argue against bad and harmful positions with reason and logic. Offense has been elevated to a ridiculously privileged level (and we all know how bad privilege is). People should take some responsibility for their own feelings. someone could be very hurtful and you can be the stronger person and be very minimally effected by it. You have some degree of choice in how you react.

so to get to the f--king point (something im clearly bad at) ... if two people know each other, are not talking about third parties, and are not offending each other ... then maybe give them the benefit of the doubt and not assume they are being hurtful.

heres my question: do intentions matter? If we could objectively know the intentions would that matter? or is this just about banning words and policing language because someone has a bad experience with a word? Do we have any responsibility for looking past our own gut reaction to things to try and hear what the other person is saying and not what we hear? (these are actual questions. i dont fully know the answers, but these SHOULD be asked)

I look forward to any rational and intelligent responses. Emotional hand wringing should be recognized as unhelpful to furthering the discussion. if you are offended, be offended and say so. this isnt about not caring about peoples feelings. but dont act like that in itself proves anything. Offense in itself isnt a counter argument and doesnt address the points i made. We all get upset from time to time but you have to rationally recognize that sometimes its misunderstanding and over-reaction on your own part (this goes for me too). dont be so quick to jump to conclusions, use your brain in conjunction with your heart, not just your heart alone.

okay Im gonna stop before i write a manifesto... ^_^;

Thx! (I was tempted to let that be the whole of my reply, because I'm a jerk lol).

Yeah, I didn't believe I'd said anything amiss. The queer thing is kind of obvious (in Hermie's case), and it's not uncommon even today to mask a character's sexuality behind a (humorous) veil (Disney still does this ...a fact I find intriguing given many things).

For myself, I'm (again-again-again) part of the alphabet soup myself---I've made so many cartoons, comics and articles about/displaying my thoughts on my orientation and perspectives that it should be obvious I'm neither ashamed of my sexuality, nor critical of others and their's (that said, I like what I like---my cartoons are mostly about me/my feelings rather than diversity for diversity's sake).

Pertaining to judgement, I subscribe to what the Bible says on the matter: "Remove the log from your own eye before you try to remove the speck from your brother's"
I cannot criticize when I'm drawing naked children to both 'live through' and express my sexuality---the mere fact that InkBunny is (effectively) one of the few places I can upload this stuff tells me (and others) that I'm certainly in a minority (even among furries, 'cub' is considered taboo---just go to FA's forum for proof of this). ^^

I'm not 'proud' of anything, either---I am what I am, I think as I think. Mine is a live and let live/you do you, I'll do me perspective. I suppose that connotes a desire for separation, but I see it more as distinction (similar, but without any prejudicial insinuation because, again, I don't really care with who or with what another sleeps, so long as it's legal and not with me). ^^

Concisely, Chippy leans more towards tolerance than outright acceptance (I prefer to overlook or ignore rather than embrace or celebrate ...which fits my *unsocial personality)

*unsocial =/= antisocial

My dislike for Hermie has nothing to do with his (supposed) orientation, but by the fact I dislike the 1960's special in general---effectively all the characters are jerks (not just to Rudolph). Hermie is perceived as cute and has endeared himself to millions ...and the special by extension. THAT last bit is why I dislike Hermie! XD

All that said, I begain by stating I'm a jerk myself. 'It takes one to know one', they say, which is how I know I'm right about the 60's Rudolph cast. ^^

just to throw you a bone I agree that (most) of the RB Rudolph characters are mean. Even as a kid this is obvious. though personally as a kid the one that really bothered me was king moonraisers unsympathic "no that would not be possible" you can only stay a night stance. like literally a place desingated for all things queer ... IS STILL UNWELCOMING! God f--king damn is there nowhere rudolph belongs?! For the other reindeer boys and girls and society at large ... not too surprising. The father is understandable and not uncommon but yeah he is kinda cold (but clarices father is far more nasty in my opinion). course there is santa, a spirit of good cheer and benevolence and the best he can seem to muster is ... well this might disqualify him (for some unexplained reason). Its cold and mean overall. But lets not forget the bright spots. Rudolph is a ray of sunshine that wont be put out, Hermey has a strong sense of self assurance thats refreshing (even more than hermey. hermey basically teaches rudolph to not give a f--k and be yourself), he also just a gentle friendly sort doesnt even hold much of a grudge, cornelius is the misfit who is so off the charts that he doesnt even know hes off the charts. hes crazy (originally he was suppose to be looking for peppermint mines). sure on the surface hes super macho and full of bravado but underneath you see hes an oddball that has no need tl judge other oddballs ... and that refusal to condemn alone would make him an outcast. he befriends rudolph and hermey without a second thought, its literally just w/e to him. lets say, cornelius isnt queer himself (at least not in the usual sense, more like what we call an eccentric) but he is a terrific ally, especially since he ends up doing most of the brave and bold stuff and doesnt seem the least afraid either. hes cool. I think I hold some respect for him even if hes not my favorite. then there is clarice. she has one shining point that makes her more than just the token"love interest". shes the only one in the room (including adults) who not only can see a glowing red nose is literally a non issue and affects no one, but that that actually makes rudolph stand out and could be taken as a positive! So props for that clarice, thats a terrific ally right there, especially since she could be said to be sacrificing some privilwge by taking such a stance. there is no way an attractive doe such as herself isnt at the top of the social pecking order (and shes kind and not snotty on top of that), but expressing those views publicly could hurt her reputation.

so there, i cant see how these 4 characters are mean. they are some of the nicest characters i can think of.

that being said, im aware that the goodtimes staff really hated it for the reason you cited and tried to correct this in their own version by making rudolphs father more supportive and santa taking rudolph under his wing (which makes ALOT more sense, even if you go back to the original poem. Its not santa who has a problem with the red nose its rudolphs reindeer peers which only shut up when he has achieved distinction by helping santa).

I guess if you really hate something (for not illegimate reasons) than when everyone else loves it to pieces that can rub you the wrong way and make you feel like the odd one out. im not gonna judge ypu for it, im sure youve gotten enough shade for it.
Zivrshka

that being said, for me personally, this is just a typical hurt-comfort story dynamic. you make the story as punishing and cruel but not because you want the audience to hate the character and relish the evil befallen them, but to help the audience sympathize with their plight (if it were more subtle it might not be as clear. even goodtimes has a whole song dedicated to a whole town kinda half way jeering at a young fawn ... it is rather fucked up when you think about it). once the audience identifies with the character you take a journey with them of self discovery and affirming their self worth ultimately ending with either them being celebrated or at least tolerated by society, and finding their small circle of people who do actually understand and care about them. theres your catharsis, and that powerful sense of relief and satisfaction would not be intense if you werent run through the emotional wringer first.

did i hate when fireball turned on rudolph, sure, did i not like it when the father forces rudolph to hid his nose and rudolph cries and asks (quite sensibly) "just because my nose glows ... why dont i fit in", of course. did i not understand why red noses were enough to disqualify you ... sure. did it suck when the one friend rudolph makes (clarice) will nevwr be seen and because of her father ... absolutely. and when even moonraiser turns em away ... you get the point.

the point is, none of this made me hate the special, it made me dislike the characters that were cruel. i would have loved rudolph regardless but seeing how unfairly he was treated made me want to love him more to compensate. thats kinda the point.

as usu. this isnt about convincing you of anything
 im just expressing my pov.

"Heres my question: do intentions matter?"

Intentions need to be understood (but not necessarily accepted), if for no other reason than to expand on the meanings and thoughts a given word, thought, idea or concept can have.

An 'intention' is basically just a use of something.

thats new to me. he seems cute enough as a character. Generally im not really big on bird and duck themed anthros (something about the beaks turns me off). i seem to mostly stick to mammals with fur. This didnt mean i didnt grow up enjoying duck tales and darkwing duck, though i probably am more found of rescue rangers and tail spin (which are all fur anthros).

anyway, character still seems appealing. what exactly is it about?

I'm not sure what it's about, really---it was a watcher recommendation (Alfred's been mentioned to me more than once, so I suppose there's some interest out there).

I prefer mammals myself (which I'm sure goes without saying). :3

oh the naughty list ... i remember stumbling upon that one year. thought the girl reindeer was cool and I remember liking it even though its nothing spectacular. christmas is here again looks familiar. i know i didnt watch it but i must have run by it sometime. I like the girl character, talking animals are always a plus, seems to have a sense of humor, decent villian, this looks like something i could get behind.

if you want something kinda offbeat but sorts sweet in its way you can try "Alien Xmas" on netflix. watched it this year and thought it wasnt too bad considering its odd premise.

This is excellent man. Especially for free-handed. Don't feel bad at all. I can't even draw free-handed lol

THAT is one HECK of a cool looking pencil. I must have missed it or didn't know about you back then but I'm glad I got to see it.
Do you have many with neat little end caps like that? I think I asked you this at one time but I don't honestly remember if or when but I'd love to see more like that especially if they're that lvl of quality! :D

It's delicate; I have it in a hard plastic tube.

I have a few toppers, yes. I don't like them because they're hard to feature.
