I've recently come to enjoy this meme and decided to make a variant of it.

Short story short: The crusades were justified and Christians over-apologize for the things that went wrong with them.

Long story long: The entire history of the crusades and important context as to why they happened in the first place.

Some of the crusading lords were real assholes. Bloodthirsty renegades, nearly. But then again, so was General Sherman.

The historical ignorance of this period makes sense given how little is taught about the (long and rich) history of the Ottomans and the various Caliphates, and the centuries of conquest at their hands.

One thing I was ignorant about as a kid concerning the Spanish Inquisitions was, I had at one time thought the inquisitioners journeyed into England when it was still heathen.
I had thought the English that the Spanish were killing were rapists, drunks, fornacators, child molesters, thieves and the alike who refused to turn from their wicked ways. And as a kid, I use to think the ways of the Spanish Inquisition were very harsh, though they felt committed to their "noble cause" of culling the evil out of the English countryside.

Actually, I later learned that wasn't it at all. The Spanish Inquisition was from the Catholic Church in Spain.  They journeyed into England to kill Protestants who refused to denounce their faith and convert to Catholicism.

The Inquisition did nothing wrong, and the crusades were great (minus the 4th one). I said.

It wasn't colonialism, it was more like they were the Christian version of Al Qaeda and/or Hamas

Actually, no they weren't. Not remotely.

Short version: Crusaders existed almost exclusively defensively/reactionarily to existing Muslim terrorism and banditry. Like all collections of humans, they were flawed individuals and often suffered from terrible and hypocritical leadership.
