BTBF 5
SYNOPSIS:
Jonah's guardians continue to argue out in the hallway, revealing key information about Jonah's character and Grace and Marten's personalities along the way. Jonah gives an example of his fixation and inability to not dwell on his unhappiness by pointing out that he has been listening to a "mix tape" of all the music Jonah and his best friend both liked. Jonah goes on to recall the many times they shared their musical tastes with each other. Here we get a small window into their "relationship". We see it was very friendly and close but that even BTBFs don't always see "eye-to-eye" as Jonah puts it. None the less we also see that their closeness is still based on something deeper than mere commonalities.

PANEL 5.1
Grace: Marten, I’ve known my son all his life and that doesn’t sound like him. He’s an innocent carefree spirit, he’s still a young boy at heart, all he ever talks about is ...
PANEL 5.2
Marten: Oh come on Grace, enough with the molly coddling! I know the boy is special needs but you need to face the reality that he's gonna grow up one day! You keep treating him like this and he's gonna grow up to be a faggot ...
Grace: My son ain't no faggot, and he ain't no retard neider!
PANEL 5.3
Jonah (narration): Take this cassette player for example. I've been lying here listening to my favorite mix tape *he* ever gave me. On it are all the songs *we* ever both liked. A playlist representing a perfect synthesis of *us*. I've been listening to it on repeat for days. It has irrevocably become the soundtrack of my whole life with *him* ... (alternatively: It has irrevocably become the soundtrack of *our* whole life together, but I can't change it now).
PANEL 5.4
Jonah (narration): I loved sharing my favorite music with *him*.
PANEL 5.5 & 5.6
Jonah (narration): *We* didn’t always see eye to eye musically …
Jonah: hmm!
Jonathan: pff
PANEL 5.7
Jonah (narration): but *we* never told each other what *we* HAD to listen to …

COMMENTARY:
This is based on a common experience of mine. Sometimes when I am having one of those "peak experiences" listening to some amazing piece of music I think ... I wish I could share this amazing experience/feeling with someone. I really love music, it is very powerful and can completely alter your state of mind in a way that no other form of art can. But sharing music comes rife with its own issues, illustrated here. It was incredibly important that I got the expressions and emotions correct here. I am particularly happy with Jonathan's look of bewildered horror (never attempted such an expression before). Jonah is really cute in panel 5.4 "rocking out" to whatever strange music he is sharing with Jonathan (I can assure you it isn't rock music and is probably not even something you can really head bang too :P ). I love Jonathan's apologetic expression in 4.5 and Jonah's pricy bit of posturing (his feelings are almost certainly hurt, but even a boy like Jonah has some sense of pride). I like Jonah's flamey little dismissive pose in 4.6, and I really like the way Jonathan and Jonah snug together in 4.7. In particular I really like the way Jonathan looks, one of my best pictures of him. He looks so at peace. The point is, that despite their differences, despite even hurting each others feelings from time to time, something deeper holds them together. They don't let those things divide them and they don't try to change each other. That to me is a very important message, especially for our times.
Stay tuned for more BTBF ...
